Best of the "Dynasty Warriors" style games?

Warriors Orochi 2 rating on Metacritic: 44

I will forvever love DW 4 but that game might be a bit outdated now. WO 2 is the best but does anyone actually enjoy the story, cause I sure don't ?

Has nobody talked about Ninety-Nine Nights? That game was a good start, and I bet the sequel will be done right.

The Dynasty Warriors game on the 360 felt so lackluster to me. At least N3 had nice graphics and a lot of people on screen. DW had no real improvements over the titles of the last generation.

Have you played the Orochi games? The three warrior gimmick changes the gameplay a lot, especially on the harder difficulties. The game is faster, there are more moves per character, and an insane number of warriors to choose from.

Honestly, I found N3 to be a mess in just about every respect. Overly long levels, dull characters, no hit detection, glitchy bosses, etc.

the last dw game i played was dw 3
recently i've played basara ( devil kings ) and its fantastic
since then i play anything devil king related ( even the fighting game )

I've been thinking about picking up N3, I'm a pretty big fan of DW and DW-style games, worth $10-$15?

Btw thanks OP, I was going to make this thread eventually, saves me the trouble.

Avoid N3, it's really bad. The hit detection in that game is so stupid, you just swing right through enemies sometimes.

I like how whenever a Dynasty Warriors clone comes along, 'critics' declare it as being better than DW. When it really isn't.

Sengoku Basara 2 is really fun, but I tend to get bored of it quicker than DW/SW/WO. Does anyone know how many moves SB2 characters have vs Samurai Warriors?

SB characters have just as many, sometimes more, moves than SW characters. The thing about SB is that you can only take two Triangle moves at a time into a stage. SB3 is changing this by allowing you to take in three or four Triangle moves at a time. A much needed change if you ask me.

The thing I really like about SB is that 90% of the time, you don't have to worry about "babysitting" your generals like you do in the Warriors games. I understand the purpose of it, of course, but it feels nice in SB to not have to worry about losing a stage because one of your generals got picked off by a crowd of like, 5 peons. In SB, if you lose, it's because YOU got killed, not someone on the other side of the map.

Of course that's not to say I dislike the Warriors series. I hold what I believe to be the best in the series (DW Gundam 2) in equal regard to the best of the Basara series (Basara 2 Heroes).

Basara 2 Heroes is so good. I pretty much only play these types of games in splitscreen, and Heroes does that very well, including the "why was this never in DW?" feature of allowing you to rescue/revive your co-op buddy if they go down. I love the completely absurd over the top style. It's also very import friendly.

Not the same style as DW, but defenetally worth playing it. Good story, music, and leveling system.

Samurai Warriors 2 is a fantastic game, definatly worth your money. All the Empires games are worth your time and money as well, they cut a lot of bs and add cool features.

The Gundam version is great, if you are into Gundam. A lot of value for your money with that one.

Stay away from Warriors Orochi 2. It's the worst Dynasty Warriors game I have ever played. Was on 360 though, so it might be better on PS3. Played like a sack of sh*t.

What's the best psp version of the game?
I really liked the Strikeforce demo, and want to get into the series.

Devil Kings is fun for a few hours but beyond that not so much. Your army is very slow to reinforce. It's basically the player running ahead and being a one man army with a basic combat system by normal beat em up standards. There's something satisfying about beating up lots of dudes but it could be so much better.

The first few PSP Dynasty Warriors games (DW, DW Vol. 2, and Samurai Warriors: State of War) broke the stages up into several smaller areas. Personally, they didn't do much for me.

Strikeforce is pretty good, though. The new missions that you can download on PSN (for free) are a nice bonus.

The two Warriors Orochi PSP games (the second one comes out this week) are both pretty faithful to the PS2 versions. They both do a great job of recreating the console experience on the handheld.

Ah, thanks. I don't know Japanese, so I was wondering if I was missing out on being able to have more than a couple of triangle moves at a time. Two really isn't enough, and four would be quite perfect.

I'm probably in the minority, but I like babysitting generals. There's nothing more satisfying than diving in and rescuing an ally. Unless the level is called "The Nanman Campaigns," or is one of those maze-like Samurai Warriors levels.

Warriors Orochi 2, without question, is the best handheld version of this series.

Don't buy Strikeforce if you have a PS3 or 360; it's being ported up and will have new content plus co-op online play.

My best recommendation, to explore each side of each respective 'faction' is to run through DW5, then Samurai Warriors 1 and 2, THEN Warriors Orochi 1 and 2. And if you're happy with that, I highly recommend diving into Dynasty Warriors Gundam 2. It's great-o!

Personally, I didn't like SB2 at all. You essentially blow through the stages cutting through peons like paper and only actually fight against the generals. If you try to make the peons an actual fight by raising the difficulty, the generals end up being too hard. Also didn't really care for any of the characters.

I see where you're coming from. SB2 reminds me of a Treasure/arcade game in that sense. Personally, I prefer the Warriors stages because they feel like they take place on a larger scale
Don't want to use the word 'epic' =P

I'm not sure where I stand on character designs, if that's what you're talking about. Basara is really anime-y, but can be interesting if you know the Sengoku Jidai history just to realise how much Capcom warped things. :D

The Warriors characters are also exaggerated, but I appreciate the smidgen of authenticity Koei added to the costumes (More so DW than SW) .

But they did mess this up in Dragon Warrior 6 by giving Zhao Yun a plain gray armour and giving Lu Bu a run-of-the-mill 'badass' armour when the cool thing about the character is that he kicked ass in purple, gold and red.

If you want to get your feet wet at a low price that 14.99 for Orochi 1 PSP on the PSN is a good deal and the game that prompted this thread.

Orochi 2 release date is tomorrow but it doesn't look like Gamestop is carrying it. I'm hoping for a digital copy myself but I did see it available on Amazon if you want the disc.

Oh man, I don't think any stage in any game ever has made me rage harder than The Nanman Campaign in DW4. To this day I don't think it's possible to finish that stage without playing co-op so one player can babysit the lead general while the other fights the enemies. :lol

I remember that stage. At the time I was using Sun Jian (who WAS the lead general) so the only way to lose was if -I- died. I remember beating that stage with the rest of my army dead.

If I remember correctly, in DW4, if you get 1000 KOs, it puts your army into maximum morale regardless of the current situation. So you could hang out with your commander to rack up that many kills, then be good to go.

Is Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce on PSP any good? I'm looking for a DW style game for the PSP and it's between it and Warriors Orochi 2 which is out soon. Looking for a game where there are loads of different quests to take on (fetch quests, defeat certain enemy etc, not just 100% hack n slash) and possibly good character customization (I'd like to constantly be buying new stuff/upgrading weapons etc).

I'd read that DW Strikeforce gets super hard at times so something where difficulty isn't too much of an issue unless I wanna take on higher ranked missions (like Monster Hunter) would be good :)

Like you, Warriors Orochi was my first game in the entire series, and I absolutely LOVED it. I was wondering why people were slagging on the Dynasty Warriors series if they were all this fun. I put like 40 hours into WO trying to get every achievement point. I loved it so damn much.

I figured the rest had to be good. Every single one I rented, bought used, was crap. All of them. None were nearly as good as Warriors Orochi.

Just stick with WO, you don't want to be let down like I was.

Heh. I think there was also a special item or weapon associated with that level. Man, it's utterly painful when your life/musou bar and character icon suddenly disappears because you know that the ally commander has been slain.

That's because Warriors Orochi is the sequel to both Samurai Warriors and Dynasty Warriors. If you had started with those games, you would have probably enjoyed them.

I know what you mean, though. I could never go back to playing Dynasty Warriors after WO.

I buy one per generation. WO2 360 was this one and it's fantastic.

As someone said the WiiSportsResort Mousoualike is good fun and needs fleshing out.

Dynasty Warriors: Gundam 2 is sex. Anything "Empires" is also sex in my opinion because the strategy part makes it just so much more rewarding to kill a million billion people. And don't forget Samurai Warriors 2, you get a strange boardgame with it!

That's impressive. How many hours has that taken you, if you dont mind me asking.

I've got a friend with over 400 hours in Gundam 2 and he's at 53% trophy completion. I think he's probably slow but still...

I can tell you it took me 40-50 hours to get the all mobile suit licenses trophy for one character...then my PS3 died and I lost the save. Haven't had the heart to start from scratch yet...I will eventually though. It's really great, such a massive improvement over dw zzzzzz gundam 1

Was the news of Ni-Oh being resurrected fake?

Honestly I'm kinda disappointed that SW3 is a Wii exclusive, even if turns out only to be a timed one. I spent ages anticipating DW on a next-gen system, years spent wondering how they'd use the extra horsepower to really fulfill the series potential, only for DW6 to disappoint. I wasn't as let down as some people but at this rate it looks like it'll be another year at least before we get another bash at a ground-up next-gen effort. Although maybe this means that they are seriously rejigging it.

I tried the demo of Gundam but it didn't really take me.
