Seeing as the OP didn't link to the STALKER mod, I will:
http://artistpavel.blogspot.com/2009/04/stalker-complete-2009.html
This mod has been created with a thought of bringing the beautiful and immersive game of STALKER from the last generation era, when it was created to an up-to-date experience you'd expect from games you play in 2009. I did not try to include every single mod out there that changes the game beyond recognition, that was not the point. The following list is the carefully chosen essential collection of most advanced and aesthetically pleasant modifications, created by talented concept artists and programmers in the past 2 years. These are meant to technically and artistically enhance the game without compromising the original feel and atmosphere developers meant you to see. You'll notice every single detail has been retouched and has a polished feel to it.

Project Reality the official ModDB "mod of the year"

it's basically i much more realistic and teamplay heavy game than BF2 ever was, the maps are HUGE and games can last hours depending on how good the teams are.

some random clip i pulled from youtube of some sqaud http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KmQp_rbrrpY&feature=related

http://www.realitymod.com/

Was coming in here to post this. Great mod i love that it filters out the idiots who ruin the main Battlefield game so the battles are always brilliant the fact that teamplay is integral is also cool as it goes towards your final team stats so no rambos here as they don't last long on their own.

Natural Selection would have to be my choice. It's the only game I know of that's successfully merged RTS/FPS gameplay. The only contender in my mind is Savage 2, but that's not a mod.

Urban Terror was a fantastic mod.

HELL YES, so fucking fantastic. I was in a pretty good clan when I was younger, but I completely forgot the name of it. :lol Good stuff though.

Another vote for Natural Selection. I played that game for months after Counter Strike finally got boring and I got a hankering for some more HL mod action. The game itself was great in that it required a great deal of teamwork and communication on both sides, while still allowing the individual performer to excel and help carry the team (so long as the Comm kept him outfitted.)

This thread is great so far. Some really cool stuff to check out this weekend :D

I wish people would make more single player mods for games.

That's how I feel. But digging around there are still a good amount of awesome single player mods. It's not a dying genre or anything.

I think it's a lot harder to make a good single player mod since you need to worry about AI, pacing and all the things that come with a single player game. Multiplayer mods can just be an idea expanded. It's why most multiplayer mods are unbalanced like a motherfucker while there are a few that were truly great.

I remembered another one I used to play all the time: Sven coop. So much fun, especially in the Resident Evil mansion level.

wish i had battlefield 2 still installed (uninstalled cuz the newest patch crashed on vista, i wanted widescreen support) id kill to play project reality, thats the type of game i want..battlefield with tactical teamplay

So after seeing the really cool Stalker 2009 mode that remakes the entire game in modern Crysis-like graphics, I'm curious about what user-created content has been made over the last 20 years. It seems (at least these days) that almost every PC game has at least a few mods made for it and many make the core game experience better. For example, I recently played Fallout 1 and something as simple as an interface mod that let you change equipped weapon a mouse wheel click made the game infinitely more enjoyable. So what are some great mods for games? I'm especially interested in offline Single Player mods (since I don't online game much), and mods that improve the core game either graphically or gameplay-wise or completely rehaul to be a whole new experience.

wait what is this Stalker mod you speak of?

All of that + a single-player mod is not likely to be replayed very many times while multiplayer is designed for it.

Happy that people found the info in my post useful (And really happy that people are trying Minerva, it really is the best HL2 singleplayer mod ever made :D ).

I'll probably spawn a sequel post after I find more more excellent mods to play.

A shame as it really is a great mod nothing like running with your squad for a couple of miles to a battle that may be over before you get there or holding off an approaching force as you wait for backup.

Action Half Life: Stunts like dives, back-flips, guns and mêlée/karate combat, awesome kills, awesome levels.

Quake Rally: Quake engine =Rally driving with machine guns and rocket-launchers. Showed how versatile the Quake engine really was, not just remaking a shooter in a shooter.

Screw Action Half-Life. The Specialists is where it's at.

Well, was where it's at. Now it's full of fucking Roleplayers, zombie mod, and 24/7 ts_lobby servers.

Finding a good, vanilla TS server on a map other than lobby is just about impossible. Maybe its changed since then, but me and my buddies used to be huge in to The Specialists and we haven't played for over a year because it basically turned to roleplayer crap.

Fall From Heaven 2 (AKA Civilization 4's Counter-Strike)

Requires Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword patch 3.17 or greater

Fall from Heaven II is a dark fantasy mod for Civilization IV. The Age of Ice has ended, what is left of the once great empires of man have formed into small tribes, ready to rebuild and retake that which was lost. But the world is not empty. Hordes of barbarians await these new civilizations. Wild animals stalk hapless scouts and reckless emissaries. Giant spiders lie in patient wait in the jungles and the forests waiting for their prey to take that last, fatal, step.

There is great evil, but also selfless good. There are those who strive to remain neutral in the coming conflict as opposed ideologies break the world asunder once again. The first goal, is survival. The second goal is power, for good or ill. Will you pursue power through strength of arms or arcane studies, through piety or blasphemy? Choose carefully. On each path you will allies, and bitter foes, and the deeper you delve into the secrets of combat, or sorcery, or the divine, the harder it will be to turn back.

Here is a brief list of some of the new features in Fall from Heaven:

Magic! - Spellcasting units can take promotions in the different spheres of magic, granting them access to new spells and abilities. A unit has access to spells depending on what sort of caster it is and the spell spheres it chooses which of 14 spheres it wants to learn when it levels up (Fire, Entropy, Nature, Spirit, etc). Casters gain experience slowly automatically, so there is no need to risk them in combat as they pursue their studies in the mystical arts.

Experience - Veteran units are now more valuable. The base promotions have been essentially doubled, making the difference between experinced units and greenhorns especially noticeable. Also, new anti-racial promotions have been added, become the scourge of the elves, if it suits your fancy.

Upgrading - In order to upgrade the the strongest units a unit must first prove itself worthy. Do you want to be an Immortal? Unable to die, and thus able to fight for all eternity? Then you have to be at least a Lv. 6 Maceman.

Religions - Not all religions are created equal, and some of them effect the alignment of your civilizations. If you choose to follow the vile practices of the Ashen Veil, your civilization will descend into the depths of Evil. You will of course be rewarded with immense arcane power, knowledge and the aid of Demons. On the other hand, if you follow the Runes of Kilmorph, you will be able to obtain the aid of the reclusive dwarves and share in their love of gold and gems.

Heroes - In times of darkness and strife, heroes will rise to lead their civilizations to victory. Heroes are world units, that can only be built once. If they die, they cannot be rebuilt. Each civilization has at least one hero associated with it, as does each religion. Heroes gain experience each turn, meaning that in any given game, they will probably be your most powerful unit by far. They are capable of taking lightly defended cities by themselves, but they're only a short dogpile away from being dead, so protect them!

Technology - Specialization is the name of the game here, while you may be able to generalize into the first or second tier of techs, you're probably better off specializing in one of the various forms of combat or the arcane or the religious. Tech progression is noticable slower in FfH, giving you an opportunity to play with those new toys you just discovered. There are also religious specific techs, that cannot be researched unless you follow the appropriate state religion.

Definitely need some suggestions for Fallout 3 soon. I'd MOSTLY like a mod that re balances the VATS and combat to feel less arbitrary. Bethesda didn't do a magnificent job of calculating damage ratios and cripple effects in the vanilla release. Would love to actually feel like shooting an enemy in the arm or leg has some sort of noticeable effect(and vice versa).

Oh and any vanity adjustments too.

Damn totally forgot about Project Reality. I haven't played it for a few versions.. in the mood to reinstall BF2 and grab it now.

Natural Selection is the best.

This is my personal favorite, and the game that turned me down the dark path of sacrificing money to the PC Gaming.

It was absolutely imperative that I played that at 1280x960/60fps/details ULTRA HIGH.
This made my day.

Yeah it does work with the Steam version.

Also, anyone got any good graphic mod upgrades for Far Cry 1? Gonna play it soon and just wondering.

the STALKER Complete 2k9 is badass! i love it.

awesome post on the HL2 mods Botlof. i only knew about 1/3 of those. werent Valve supposed to start integrating mods to be advertised, downloaded, and patched via Steam a ways back?

did they ever really keep up with this? (i havent checked the mods section in a while. i remeber it being not so user friendly when i first check it a long time ago...).

edit: http://store.steampowered.com/freestuff/mods/

only 20 there... they do have Minerva there. hm. i was hoping it would be a bit more fleshed out by now.

edit 2: Gaf Half Life Mods topic.

just found the HL2 mods topic here on GAF started by yours truly.

Agreed. No other game has come close to merging rts aspects with a team based shooter. I still play today on one of the very few australian servers that still run it

Adding another +1 to Natural Selection... insane mod. I think there's a lot of really interesting things to learn in that mod - stuff that we're not seeing in games, to this day.

Asymmetrical Multiplayer is really hard - and NS is awesome.

Some mods do have Steamworks support, like Synergy or Zombie Panic.

Valve said:
It is appropriate for use in broad release commercial games, but we don't think it and our support infrastructure is ready for Mods or games likely to have a very small install base or just starting out with growing their user base. It's a bit of a judgment call on our part that we have to make but past history can give you some examples of Mods and games that have reached an audience size that we think can best leverage the Steamworks features (e.g. Day of Defeat, Counter-Strike, Garry's Mod).

Most of the tools and functionality included in Steamworks is intended to support games by including ancillary functions like cheat detection and DRM. Obviously, those things won't help you build a great game in the first place -- Steamworks is not intended as a game creation platform.

So it'll be the big multiplayer mods that see Steamworks support it looks like (One could always code in custom achievements for a single-player mod if they wanted it).

There's some kind of vehicle selected there with wheels, but also still researching the wheel :P.

Yes, Natural selection for Half-life (www.unknownworlds.com/ns) is an amazing mod. It was my main online game until KZ2 came along, but i doubt i'll stay away much longer :)

Looking forward to NS2.

Hi to anyone who plays on VH2 or Able.ns, fuck off to NS "Talent" server and it's 13 year old racist admins.

Btw...are there any good Fallout 3 graphics mods out there(the F3 thread is a bit crowded so I'll ask here)? I've seen some texture replacements, but it doesn't seem to be that much of an improvement.

sounds so good

Three more mods I quite liked.

Half-Life 2

Das Roboss said:
Combine forces are in the process of constructing a huge robot in an abandoned government fallout shelter outside City 17. The robot, codenamed “Das Roboss”, is the most destructive Combine creation yet. It makes Striders look like daddy long-legs.

Your mission is to infiltrate the occupied bunker and find Das Roboss. If you can destroy, steal, or otherwise remove the robot from Combine hands you will be doing City 17, and the world, a great service.

A bit rough around the edges, but Das Roboss has a wonderful sense of gameplay flow and scale. It has three maps and a lot of combat. Very few gripes with it.

In this single player map for Half-Life 2, Gordon Freeman infiltrates a powerstation commandeered by Combine forces in an effort to destabilize their control of the region.

Half-Life 2: Episode Two

Neuromancer said:
For this level I chose to focus on intuitive aspects of level design with an emphasis on puzzles. A designer faces many challenges while creating a level that is intuitive to the player. Each player has a unique way of solving a puzzle and associating the objects nearby with their surroundings. In Neuromancer, the player must use the data cubes to hack into cyberspace and decrypt barriers which unlock new areas of the physical world. The data cubes are a prime example of objects which the player must associate correctly in order to unlock new areas.

I wanted to work with cyberspace for a while and knew it would be a rewarding task to try and create two different environments and seamlessly tie them together to create a solid piece. From custom texture creation to detailed attention to the placement of assets, each area provided an artistic challenge during creation.

Very short but with very interesting visuals and some unique puzzle design.

I installed it and tried it earlier just because of this thread and your post. (3.5GB download lulz)

I jumped into a game (there was only Insurgency types) without doing any training, kept getting messages to join a squad, so I did. Then we were wandering about, and suddenly there was a like a tank and three helicopters, so I bolted down an alley instead of staying behind with everyone else who got slaughtered.

So I got kicked from the squad for "abandoning my squad."

At least they weren't saluting superiors and getting angry when someone was pubbing with the "wrong" weapon.

(Not that I don't besmirch playing how you want, especially on your own server, but I've seen those realism clans wander into public servers and see another clan member playing a class they aren't "allowed" to and proceed to make VOIP lulzy.)

Loved the scope of the maps though and the core concepts. It ran a lot worse than BF2 though. (I run it basically maxed (AA at just 2x) just fine and this was stuttering all over.)
