Best PS4 HDD currently?

At the time of the launch, there were a few different options. Some people put SSD's in. Other people went for hybrid drives and there were also 7200rpm drives. While I'd want an SSD, they're still too expensive for my liking, so it was either the hybrid or the 7200rpm drive. In the end I went with the 7K because i felt that the 8GB NAND on the hybrid wasn't enough considering how big some games can be. If it was 32GB I would have chosen it.

Now it's been 8 months and I was wondering if there were better alternatives compared to around launch? I'm considering getting a second PS4 so me and my brother can play together on FFXIV. We tried it on PS3 and it runs awful in comparison, pretty much a night and day generational gap, and nigh on unbearable when you're used to better. And even if it was fine, we would've needed another PS4 for Destiny coop in a couple months anyway.

So are there better alternatives for hard drives at the moment? Or some due to be released in the next 2 months? I can get the same ones as earlier for a decent price, but I kinda hoped for some better for the 2nd PS4. For size I'd want it to be at least 1TB, but after that I'm not bothered by increased capacity and more to due with performance (without entering SSD ranges).

EDIT: I worded the OP incorrectly. I already have the 7200 Travelstar. I'm just wondering if there have been newer and better alternatives released in comparison to the options that were available at launch. This would be for a second PS4

Most reviews of hybrid drives that I have seen are 5400 RPM hybrids, which is why their performance never seems to be very good in comparison articles. I am personally holding out for a good deal on a 7200 RPM hybrid drive, which will probably end up being close to SSD in performance, but much cheaper.

A bit off topic but is there a way to get my digital bought games from the stock hdd onto the new hdd without having to load everything?

This a great question. Does PS4 even have a backup utility like the PS3 has?

I threw a standard 1TB, 5400 rpm, HDD in my PS4 on launch day. It was only $80 bucks and hasn't given me any trouble. Sure, if love to install an SSD, but those are still pretty expensive.

is it safe to put a 7200RPM in a PS4?

Well I have a 7200 1TB Travelstar, and touch wood there have been no problems. Checking tests online, it seems that drive doesn't really run hot compared to other standard drives. The HDD bay is also far away from the core components that would heat up the most

I put in a 7200 1.5gb drive on launch day.

Zero issues, and it loads things much faster than the stock drive I have in my PS4 at work.

Funny enough, the second generation of the Momentus XT, the first popular hybrid drive, was 7200RPM (and I think the first gen was too?) while the third gen regressed back to 5400RPM. They said the advances in caching offset that, but I still feel the second gen is far superior. They both have the same 8GB cache, the third gen can cache writes but the read cache is what's important to me so that's fine. I have the second gen 750GB Momentus XT, I still really like it.

For anybody looking for a SSD, I got this in my email from Newegg (might be one use, idk):

I have had the Crucial M500 960GB, in my PS4 since day one, and the 500 gp from it in the PS3, all of us have been very happy. :)

My dream drive would be a 7200rpm hybrid with more than 8GB of flash. I'll hold out until a 2TB version of that is released.

But if they ever add external drive support, I would probably just go that route. I can't seem to get my PS4 opened easily and I am afraid of breaking it.

I came to ask this. So we can't attach external HDDs?

For price and storage I would go with the Seagate or Toshiba 1TB SSHD. Tests like the one IGN did show that the SSD benefits are pretty minor compared to an SSHD. A 1TB SSD will cost you more than the entire console itself, while a 1TB SSHD can cost as low as $50 (Toshiba 1TB SSHD).

Yeah I see this... the Momentus XT is $120 at Amazon, whereas the 5400 RPM newer model is $95 :/

Hopefully this fall some good deals will be out there... that is when I'll start using my PS4 way more anyway.

I plan to buy an SSD this holiday as prices fall due to increased competition.
Just recently the 1TB Evo dropped to 400$ and the oficial price according to amazon is now $500.

Adata can't release soon enough for them to drive prizes even lower with their 2TB SSD.

If I didn't have other expenses this month and the other I would have pulled the trigger on the Evo already. I'm Ok with the 256SSD I have right now but data management/handling gets too annoying sometimes

Surprised Seagate is even mentioned. Aren't they considered the worst according to failure rate tests?

They are the best (granted there are only like 3 manufacturers of SSHDs) for SSHDs.

The 1tb 7200rpm non sshd (they run at 5200rpm) were out performing the sshd last I looked.

I think it depends on what content. If it's something that is loaded often like maps that can fit in the 8gb cache that's faster on SSHD. For general things the 7200rpm is going to be faster, but also hotter.

The best of both worlds would be the last gen 7200rpm SSHDs.

Not exaclty an apples to apples comparison, but in FFXIV my PS4 running a 5400rpm SSHD is much faster at loading than my friends PC with a 7200rpm HDD. Easy to tell because we run dungeons together and I always load in much faster.

Seagate hard-drives were great 15 years ago; however, their quality control has subsequently fallen off the map. Their recent offerings appear to be a step in the right direction, but they are still on my personal "don't buy" list.

Thank you never saw this before, the M500 is definitely a great SSD for its almost TB capacity and price point, highly recommended after 6 months of use.

Another thing not mentioned here are the faster in menu/browser surf times, which get reasonably faster.

It was my understanding that the game video caching was what was commonly stored in the flash memory most often because it is the most common process doing r/w to the drive, which uses that very logic to determine what is stored in flash, thus negating any benefits to game asset loading.

Game Informer seems to have a pretty informative guide on how to upgrade the PS4 hard drive in this month's issue.

Thanks for the tip on that 750GB 7200RPM Momentus XT Hybrid. Found a new one on ebay and paid $103 shipped.

I will be putting it in my white PS4 September 9th!

Just put a 1tb samsung evo ssd in my ps4 last week. Cost was $400 and it took about 30 minutes for everything. The HD swap itself is super simple. Speed is very very nice now.

I don't think a bigger HDD will be needed for 99% of people until 2015. Might as well wait for better deals.

I've already filled up my Hard drive and I think I only have about 8 physical games (zero full digital games outside of PS Plus). Once you incorporate pictures/videos from the share button, free PS Plus games and demos, space goes FAST. I prefer to not have to delete my game data from the physical games and re-install when I want to play again, its super annoying and detracts from me wanting to play them again because of the wait. Sure the inital download is pretty quick, but most of the time you can't access most of the games features until the full download is done.

I'd like to get a faster drive, but space is most important to me and I feel like i'll just run into the same issue with a 1TB drive pretty quickly. Luckily, the 2TB ST2000LM003 sounds like exactly what I need, even if my heart yearns for a SSHD.
