I'm currently relistening to the Overly Dedicated mixtape by Kendrick Lamar, made before he did his first album Section .80.
While it doesn't fully reach the excellent style of his albums, I absolutely love that mixtape. Barely a weak song here (even though 'Michael Jordan' really is a song where you have to be in the right mood for it) and the opening track "The Heart Pt. II" simply is one of the best songs by that guy I ever heard, using the wonderful track from the Roots to full potential. That guy has created a mixtape that is better than many regular albums of many rappers.
Like with most mixtapes you can get it on Datpiff or similar sites for free.So here.

That reminds me that I really got crazy for the Erykah Badu Mixtape "But you caint use my Phone" released this year that I listened through a few times now. Unfortunately it's not one of the free ones but I hope they release it on somewhere else than iTunes, preferably on vinyl. Here's the first track on youtube.

Now that I'm pretty new to the world of hip hop mixtapes and really want to go deeper here, what are some that you can recommend? Doesn't have to be the Jazz Rap/Conscious Rap style I like but any style for anyone here, of course.

I really like Sorry 4 The Wait 2 by Lil Wayne and the Kanan Tape by 50 cent also BFK by freddie gibbs.

ugh. if you're gonna listen to Wayne tapes, go Dedication 2, Da Drought 3, No Ceilings. There are good songs on some of the sqad up tapes (Me and My Girlfriend is still dope), the suffix (moment of clarity is great). There are a lot of tapes by the empire with wayne loose tracks, so you'll have to look around, but those 3 are the main essential wayne tapes. Find Tha Carter III mixtape, too.

I have nothing to contribute other than the fact that I am delighted that these things are still called mixtapes.

Come and join us in GAF-Hop.

This came out this week and it's a lovely listen.

What's the difference between an album and a mixtape? I thought a mixtape was just something released for free, but I've seen albums released for free too?

I remember really liking J.Cole's The Warm Up.

understandably because it has dreams which is a great song.

There's barely any difference but rappers have full control over their tapes where they may not have it on albums. A lot of mixtapes are better than their actual albums, too.

Fun thread thanks for making me revisit some of these!

Wale's early tapes (Mixtape about Nothing, More Nothing, Paint a Picture, 100 Miles & Running) are actually the best stuff he's put out.

This is just a small sample of many. I actually enjoy mixtapes alot more then albums since it lets the artist do a bit more.
Also Drake So Far Gone

Anything by currenSy aka Spitta Andretti

props, I forgot about Spitta!

This was a mixtape? God damn it felt more like an album. I have to check if he has any more recent mixtapes.

I could've sworn it was? I usually refer to things as 'projects' now, alot ofthese 'mixtapes' are album quality, all original material.

Mixtapes to me were when people flowed on other peoples beats *sigh* the good old days.

Acid Raps is my favorite mixtape of all time

This I'm currently listening and I'm really liking it!

A Kid Named Cudi

I remember listening to that one several years ago, didn't know that it was a mixtape!
