Best Running Animation/Cycle

I can't identify what part of Thanalan this is, and it's bugging me, since I've spent way more time running around Thanalan than I care to admit.
 
I'm pretty sure it's Highbridge in Eastern Thanalan, on the side leading to Shroud.
Ah, I see it now.

For some reason my brain kept trying to interpret it as Vesper Bay, which I knew was wrong because the only open vista there is to an ocean, not a scenic mountain backdrop.
 
Yeah, MGSV Snake has the best running animation I've seen in games so far, it felt so good and natural, and the sound feedback helps a lot too, the only problem with it is that once you upgrade the speed, it looks a bit awkward as it is way too fast, but the regular speed running animation is perfection.

Highbridge? I've been out of the game for a few months, but that was my first thought.

Couldn't find any good gifs of Jak and Daxter but here's a vanilla Ratchet run cycle that has some really nice overlap animation in his ears and tail. Would be nice if they did variations on it for different situations like frantic sprint and determined dash.

You've got to be trolling lad. It's slowed down to show off the detailed running ltitle man. Since you obviously know so much about the running animation, you should know what it looks like full speed boy.

You seriously think Just Cause 2 and Deadly Premonition are in the same league son? You're out of your mind child.
 
MGSV's are posted already, so there goes my vote.

I love the running animations in the Assassin's Creed games!

I do, too, but man, I fee like ACIV's are the worst. It looks so stilted and stiff. A step backwards from how smooth ACIII felt and looked. Unity and Syndicate's look much better, too.
 
Yes, it's MGSV.

The combination of the animation, motion blur and responsiveness of the controls makes it a joy just to move Snake around.
 
The animations in Shantae games are always great (especially Pirates Curse) but I've especially always loved the run cycle in this section:

Or, more specifically, how Shantae runs on the spot when you're not moving, makes the whole scene feel a lot more urgent and comical than it would if she just stopped in her tracks.

Yeah I know what you mean, I was struggling to find some gifs from the other games so just posted that one.

I remember playing Assassin's Creed 3 for the first time and being absolutely blowing away by the animations, it was crazy!
It was a pretty big jump from the previous Assassin's Creed games to ACIII.

I can't find any proper running gifs, but Connor in Assassin's Creed 3 still has the best animation in the series. It's a shame that Black Flag took a step backwards in terms of animation.

This game has amazing animations!
 
Smooth doesn't always mean good, I love SotN but the run cycle is very floaty and weird feeling.

Thank you, I was gonna say. The reason it feels weird and floaty is because his upper body is barely moving up and down, like it's on a rail or something. When you run, your whole body moves up and down, in a sinusoidal pattern, not on a straight line. This issue is even more apparent when Alucard turns around. That, of all animations, should be the 'jerkiest' one, yet it's like he's a bar of soap sliding at the bottom of a bathtub.

I'm fairly certain the viking in for honor uses a slight variation of this running animation.
 
Can't find any videos of it, but I was very impressed by the way that in Dead Space 2 (might have also been in 1 too, can't quite recall) your walking animation in zero gravity environments became more stompy and labored as the result of your feet being magnetized to the floor.

Erm to capture and express the ridiculous attention to detail of Snakes stride? Look at his lunge, he's propelling him self off the ground in a completely organic way, his feet and knee adjust in height as his right leg steps into the slight dip in the floor but maintains his speed without breaking into a new animation, there's clear improvisation of movement based on the environment. It's far more sophisticated then any of the canned animations you've provided from your list of games. If you can't see that then you shouldn't be making claims about running animations IMO.
