Best-selling FPS franchises

Especially considering how influential it was for the whole genre
Most of the list is leaning towards more recent releases. Selling one million was a success for every game in the past and above 5 or even 10 exceptional. In the case of id, probably some engine sales as cherry on top.
Now Krafton supposedly expected 5mio for Calisto Protocoll, same as Square and Tomb Raider.

Regarding James Bond, the estimated sales of the FPS games:

GoldenEye 007 (1997) - 8,090,000

007: The World is Not Enough (2000) - 2,470,000

James Bond 007: Agent Under Fire (2001) - 5,150,000

James Bond 007: Nightfire (2002) - 5,060,000

GoldenEye: Rogue Agent (2004) - 1,600,000

007: Quantum of Solace (2008) - 3,860,000

Goldeneye 007: Reloaded (2010) - 2,720,000

007 Legends (2012) - 760,000

One can just get the sense of burnout people had by 2012, despite the franchise's earlier success.

Call of Duty is a very good video game.
Hmm, so why do I see people who have been playing it for 300,000 hours say it's really boring. I've also noticed many people playing a game called "BF6" instead because COD is so bad. They say "BF6" is incredible, so obviously it must be a completely different and more diverse experience.

Ones that stood out:

1.) Call of Duty - 500 million - 5x the next-closest series. Damn!

3.) Borderlands - 96.5 million - Had no idea this was that successful. No wonder they thought they could release BL3 PC exclusively on Epic Games Store and not take a hit (but I bet they did).

10.) BioShock - 43 million - Didn't realize my boy Bioshock was doing this well for himself. Makes it even stranger they haven't put out a reboot or sequel in the past 12 years.

16.) Half-Life - 26.3 million - Pretty impressive for a PC-leading series. I'd bet ~1/4th of these sales are on console.

17.) Doom - 20 million -Surprisingly low. Each game in the modern reboot trilogy deserves more love. They tried something different on each one and delivered

18.) Metro - 16.2 million & 19.) S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - 15 million -The same 15-16M players buying both Metro and STALKER lol. Makes sense to me!

Yep, Borderlands 2 and 3 reportedly sold at least 53 million copies combined:

There will always be people who complain about something especially when you have such a large number of players

I tried for years to get into Borderlands and finally it clicked with Borderlands 3 with me. Loved the game and looking forward to play Borderlands 4 in the near future.

Doom and Half-Life being so low down is criminal.
This is perfectly logical. A lot depends on when and in what period the games were released. At the time of Doom, PCs weren't as widespread, and they were still quite expensive devices that few could afford. Half-Life came later, but the PC market still hadn't developed that much. Plus, newer games now have a huge advantage thanks to digital distribution. And other factors aside, the results Doom achieved at the time were simply phenomenal, considering the time of its release and the state of the market.

P.S - I also remember the time when the first Unreal came out, and I didn't have a single friend whose PC could run it normally, and 3DFX was far from everyone's thing back then.

Then you might be interested to hear that many of us think Borderlands 4 is a much appreciated improvement over Borderlands 3 :)

I can understand Half-Life.......just.

But since the 90s Doom has been on PC, PS1, Saturn, N64, GBA, Xbox etc. Not to mention the new games on all systems possible and the re-release of the older games.

Based on that, I'm a little shocked to see it not higher up on the list.

Ports of Doom to other platforms weren't very successful (and sometimes downright bad - 3DO). Game's main success was on PC—10 million copies was an incredible result for the time. It was installed on virtually every PC available. :messenger_smiling_with_eyes:

No formal list, but in pulling up data I've seen off-hand:

Gears of War - 41 million

Ratchet and Clank - 40 million

Splatoon - 30 million

Sniper Elite - 30 million

Helldivers - 22 million

SOCOM U.S. Navy SEALs - 12 million

Tom Clancy's The Division - 10 million

Max Payne - 7.5 million

Dead Space - 7.4 million

Syphon Filter - 5.5 million
Uncharted would qualify for this. Would also be in top spot just above Gears by a couple of million.

If DOOM wasn't initially a shareware release, it would be much, much higher.

No. I refuse to accept this. I can't believe PayDay and James Bond FPS games have sold more than Doom.

And they left out PUBG at 75 million, which is one IP and released less than 10 years ago.

No wonder Killzone franchise is dead. I honrstly thought KZ2 alone did 10m+

PS3 exclusives didn't sell all that well. especially not early ones.

for perspective, Halo 3 sold as many copies in 2 weeks, as Uncharted 2 sold during the entire PS3 gen.

Ready or Not and Hunt: Showdown should probably be on there. Escape From Tarkov as well. And as others mentioned, PUBG.

And I don't understand how it uses the metrics on the free-to-play games on the list.

But COD is surely a giant, only Mario eclipses it.
