Best single player/soloable MMO?

For MMO fans, which games do you feel are very enjoyable (preferably all the way to max level) while playing by yourself? I often love the feel of MMO worlds, they're huge, sprawling. Lots of quests (even if they are repetitive as fuck) but hate having to rely on teams or parties.

Let's not mention WOW though, played that for years.

There is no other answer because the solo MMO experience didn't really exist before WoW, and everything after was a clone.

If PSO counts, that's my choice.

Edit: Additionally, right now, FFXIV A Realm Reborn or Ragnarok Online depending on the class you play.

You can go to max level and explore in Guild Wars 2 on your own. You don't have to team up, but of course you'll come across random strangers who will also do dynamic quests now and then. Everyone gets their part of the reward, so you don't have to feel like teaming up with him or something like that :)

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn.

Outside of the Primal battles, and a few mandatory dungeons, you can pretty much play through the entire game solo if you want. Of course, it's a lot of fun to play with others, but you're free to go off by yourself if you feel like it.

In addition to this, it's simply an incredible Final Fantasy title.

For me, the solo/singleplayer content in an MMO is a means to an end. I want to get to the end and do the group content.

That being said, if you really want it and have the stomach for voice acting (I sure don't) SWTOR is a good choice, and The Secret World is great.

Yup

Ok, dumb question, but why do people keep saying this? Be more specific.

Is it because it has some awesome story?

Great quest?

People are making me real interested in FF

Great story and some of the quests are really fun. Coupled with the open sandbox design its basically Final Fantasy XII without some of the annoying characters.

I liked the Imperial Agent story line in SWTOR. I wish they'd make a single player game around that class.

Right now I'm trying out XIV:ARR with some buddies and it seems possible to lone wolf it. The story is boring and nothing close to what SWTOR offers, though.

I was going to make a thread like this but basically lament the fact that some of the most interesting worlds crafted for RPGs these days seem to be MMOs, and I have no interest in both the core idea behind them or the things that being an MMO necessitates (horrible battle systems, quest lines that don't really alter the world because it can't). Oh well, this will do I suppose.

while leveling DCU online is quick pace, easy to learn , lots of collecting, quests, and dungeon runs but they are not necessary for leveling. Achieves with actual rewards, solid graphics depending how you scale it up, weapons ....you could get to max level in a short time. Now max level i dunno how much fun youd have lots of raids/ dungeons/ duo's but there are solo dungeons for all level ranges then later on gear levels at max level. F2P might be what your lookin for.

Borderlands always felt to me like an MMO without the need for other people. Skyrim/Elder Scrolls games too, to a lesser extent.

Both have sprawling open worlds with a lot of quests/missions though. I'm not sure where MMOs have an advantage over these games, once you remove the social element. Is it the queued/non-realtime combat? The big skill bar or long progressions?

Interesting story, characters, and a great soundtrack.

It also helps that the gameplay itself is very enjoyable. A lot of attention/care went into the re-launch, and it shows. Yoshi-P, and his team, deserve a lot of credit.

SWTOR, would be my guess.

Yeah, this was serviceable as a mainly single play endeavor for me.

However it was too grindey (which is why I normally steer clear of MMOs in general), having to do too much repetitive crap to progress. But any MMO would be like that whether you're solo or in groups.

That's why I put 180+ hours in BL2 and over 90 in Skyrim. Fucking loved those games.

That's not really something to brag about.
I just started Rift, seems pretty easy to solo.
You can play Mabinogi solo if you plan ahead if you have you build in mind from the start.

Not sure if you want action-MMORPGs like Warframe.

If modern game systems are what you seek FFXIV is a great choice as it is very accessible. However, for a beautiful and detailed world with an amazing story, FFXI is second to none. It has been made far more accessible with recent updates and is soloable.

WoW was tons of fun leveling and doing quests, dungeons and raids were annoying because they took hours for nothing a lot of the time.

But actually Kingdoms of Amalur is a single player game but it is pretty much an mmo. Big zones, lots of quests, does get repetitive after a while.

Is FF monthly sub? You folks are really making me want to play it.

KOA was potentially great. I dropped it after a while though :(

Yea, $13 a month for one character I believe.

Keep in mind it's not possible to solo to max level and 99% of the quests are monotonous, generic MMO quests. Some beautiful areas and music, but those are really the most redeeming qualities of the game. Otherwise it's Generic MMO 19: Final Fantasy skinned edition.

Final Fantasy XIV, it's just fun (sub)
Guild Wars 2, makes you play with others while solo in a non intrusive way. has fun PvP (no sub)

Lord of the Rings Online has made changes with the Helm's Deep release that made it extremely solo friendly. So much so that it's driven all the raiding kinships away from the game :-P

It's a soloers paradise right now. Great storyline and excellent landscapes.

It's Free to Play and you can earn Turbine Points to purchase things in the in-game store by completing deeds in game. Deeds are like achievements and will net you titles to use in game and turbine points.

The class changes they did with the Helm's Deep expansion release made the skill/trait system give you more directed choices that appeal to a more casual and non hardcore crowd.

Bad for groupers and raiders like me but good for the people who don't care about that stuff.

Hell, it's made so easy now a Guardian can solo a 12 man skirmish raid by himself.

Though I see no reason why you would want to play an MMO alone, Guild Wars 2 is definitely solo-able, and careful attention was paid t to minimize the negative impact of other players on your experience;

  • No mob tagging.
  • Instanced resource nodes (nobody can 'steal' your ore/wood/herb nodes as a copy exists for everyone).
  • Dynamic Events in place of static quests. Other players aren't competition for quest mobs / objectives since everyone is contributing towards the success of the event together.
  • Event Scaling (more players showing up doesn't trivialize content; it makes it harder and in turn, increases the rewards).
  • No Factions: PVP exists only in their own game modes, so you never run into another player who you is 'part of the other team' that you can't communicate with.
The only thing you need other players for are dungeons, but don't be surprised if you end up running with players in informal groups, since other players are helpful rather than a hindrance to your progress. It's almost impossible to grief other players in the game.

While not being an actual MMO, Xenoblade's combat and quest structure has often been compared to one, so you might want to check that out if you liked Skyrim and BL2.

Though I see no reason why you would want to play an MMO alone,

MMO's tend to be huge. I love exploring shit and feeling like being apart of some larger world. I actually like seeing actual people run around and shit (though don't care about joining them). Its a feeling that is rarely duplicated with actual single player games.

This. You can play through the entire personal story part of the game solo except for the very last dungeon.

How is the story of Guild Wars 2?

The personal story sucks. The Living World story has been pretty cool, and the GW2 developers got guts as they're not afraid to do stuff normally reserved for expansions. Like blow up a major hub city.

Right now FFXIV has the best single player experience MMO. Great cast of characters, awesome battles, and its story plays tribute to the first seven FF games in many different ways. You'll need a group for some dungeons, but most of the story can be done solo.

From my experience pretty much all current MMO's are soloable up to max level and beyond depending on what you want to do.

WoW, SWTOR, Guild Wars 2, FFXIV: A Realm Reborn all are solo friendly.

I'm sure many others are as well.
