Best Star Wars lightsaber duel

Is this from The Clone Wars 3D animated series? (I stopped at the end of season 2).

Yep. Season 1 and 2 had moments of greatness but hindered by a lot of mediocre but Season 3-5 became so good. Even though Disney were douches and cancelled the series when 5 ended it ended on good enough terms to be satisfying though with a few questions left.

Ah, thank you. Would you happen to know under what phrase I can find the video from which the gif was made?

The Empire duel, closely followed by the Throne Room duel. Fuck the prequels. The lightsaber fights were all garbage, every single one of them.

Maul, no doubt. One of my favorite movie moments of all time and for this preaching about "emotion", it's got plenty.

Luke/Vader RTOJ close second.

Darth Maul is the correct answer. Alot of people wont mention it because they hate 1-3 but that fight was too fucking cool.
No. People won't mention it because even though it looks "cool," no one cares about the characters fighting. It's basically bland guy 1 and guy 2 vs cool-looking dude.

Vader Vs. Luke in Empire Strikes Back hands down, even though I think the rematch in ROTJ is more emotional. The great part of the ESB duel is that there's a deliberate slow pace to it and there's a real feeling of dread/fear that Vader is going to flat out destroy Luke he's so powerful.

I was looking far more forward to Yoda VS Palpatine than Obi-Wan VS Anakin. The former was a little disappointing, but that build-up was worth it.

Out the way, guards.

Eps 4, 5, 6 are better than the prequels but don't they have pretty shitty fight choreography?

It would have been great to have more force battle usage but I think creativity was an issue and how to show it from Lucas. I was like you though the Idea of Palpatine and Yoda duking it was so much a bigger thing to me than Anakin and ObiWan. When the trailer showed Palpatine was going to wield his saber I was like :O

What's happening ITT are people are either heavily weighting towards story, or heavily weighting towards physicality. Not a lot of blending the two, or one side taking the other into account somewhat, or people accounting for lighting/editing/score along with the acting/choreography.

4 was a simple fight between an old man and a guy in a suit who couldn't move. There was nothing to it, choreography wise. 5 and 6 saw lengthy lightsaber fights across multiple and large sets and were choreographed perfectly.

As others have said, the problem with the fights in the prequels is no one is trying to kill the other. They're swinging at each others lightsabers, not the person holding the lightsaber.

Now granted, in ESB, Vader was intentionally not going for the kill shot on Luke, but Luke sure was trying to kill Vader. It wasn't really until ROTJ that they were both trying to kill each other, and even then, the argument can be made that Vader was still holding back until he pushed Luke over the Edge and Luke raged at him. But the point is that there was motivation behind the fights and their choreography in E4-6, where the coreography in the prequels was done in a way to make the fights last a long time, and in no way looked like people fighting to kill.

Yes. I don't think human actors can properly portray a good sword fight. Sadly neither could the CG Yoda. I hope they start thinking outside the box in what makes a cool swordfight. John Williams fight tracks are always amazing.

I'm pretty sure they need some kind of one hit mechanic like they used in troy

My friend you contradict yourself by bringing up Troy:

Possibly one of the best fights in cinema.

This.

1.75 movies worth of build up towards this moment. Culminates in the greatest twist in cinematic history. Oh, and the good guy gets absolutely dominated.

Of course, the final duel in Jedi is incredible as well, but I'd have to give the ESB fight the nod just barely.
