I seriously can't believe no one hasn't mentioned this. I came into this thread expecting this to be every post.

first think I thought of, when I read the topic title.

silence of the lambs basement scene.

I love this thread (tension is the best feeling during movies / shows).

Most of my movie examples have been posted already but for a show
the project housing scene in ep 4 of true detective

Basically every shot of Michael Myers watching people in Halloween, especially the one in which you see him behind the curtain of a door.

I'm just throwing this one in here; I'm not saying it's anywhere near the best, or the cream of crop but it does the job very effectively; short but suspenseful scene - I think it was helped by the death of a certain major character earlier that put the notion in your mind that just about anyone could get killed off at that point.

There's a scene in Mulholland Drive where one of the characters enters a house. It's incredibly suspenseful. I don't remember who goes in or where it is, but some googling leads me to believe it might be Diane entering her Aunt Ruth's apartment. Maybe. At any rate, it was so tense that I had to pause the movie for a good while.

I'm sure some won't agree with me:

Casino Royale - oddly enough, I find the No Limit Texas Hold'em card games tobe full of suspense.

i know its not a movie but the execution scene in the killing was the most intense thing i have ever seen

also stop posting images without the movie name...

also, the whole final 30 minutes of Predator. I remember watching it for the first time some twenty years ago, alone at night, and it scared the living shit out of me. Expecially this part

man what a great director McTiernan was

Car scene from Children of Men

One of the best long takes I've seen.

I prefer this scene. You can almost feel how close they are.

Sidenote: What sort of "connected" me to this film's dystopian reality was the Renault Megane. In many "end time" movies, cars have either been customized or are barely recognizable.
Seeing that worn out Megane really made me think that this world wasn't that far from reality. Suits the whole tone of the movie well.

It's missing a few seconds from the beginning where they check the first few cars and remove some of the wires too. Love how subtlety the sun rises in this scene.

Scream 2 - Gale Chase scene

Children of Men car shoot out

Blair Witch ending

Rec's ending

Numerous scenes from Halloween

Im assuming you mean the original Halloween right?

I'm in the minority, but I enjoyed Rob Zombies verison. However, there wasn't any suspense. So I hope you mean the original.

Inception-The flipping van sequence

The Sixth Sense and pretty much any other movie where they show the ghost moving around behind a character in the background but don't play any music to indicate that it was there.

Scream 2 - Gale Chase scene

Woop! I ain't the only one. Best cat-and-mouse scene ever, I say.

Though that car scene needs more love in this thread.

The car scene is another one I was gonna post from that film but I thought I'd just go for the Gale chase scene; I think Scream 2 wasn't as violent or sinister as the first film but it was a hell of a lot more suspenseful, that car scene was amazing too, I was terrified the first time I seen it (I was about 10 at the time)

Hitchcock needs more mentions. What about this?

North by Northwest

I was going to mention this. That scene is fantastic! Also, another great Hitchcock thriller is The Birds. Especially if you go into the movie cold not knowing anything about it. But I'm sure everyone knows the twist by now.

Another good thriller is Wait Until Dark starring the lovely Audrey Hepburn.

It's a slow burn at the beginning, and then it's non-stop tension!

War of the Worlds is playing tonight on TV and it reminded me of the basement scene.

It's probably my favourite movie that stars the Cruise missile.

For a TV show this came to my mind immediately

Eye-of-the-Beholder.jpg

Twilight zone episode Eye of the Beholder. Besides that, the show is filled with suspenseful moments.

The Winkie's scene from Mulholland Drive. When he sees the other guy at the cash register and realises that it's happening = chills down the spine.

Heroes Season 1: they built great suspense over this person was that was carving open people's skulls and playing with their brains.

And then it vanished with his reveal. SYLAR is still the shit though.

That scene really bothered me. What person in their right mind would be stupid enough to stumble around blindly like that in that situation with no backup? It really destroyed her character to me.

How do you mean? I think she had no reason to believe it was the killer's house, and once she does, she chases him into his dungeon thing.

Does she not call for backup before she chases him? Also, I'm pretty sure he turns the lights off AFTER she gets down there, so she didn't just enter a dark room.

Joffrey's Wedding Banquet
in Game of Thrones,
there comes a point where you know something bad is going to happen (but you're not sure to who), and it goes on, and on, and on.
