Best vocal song from Final Fantasy?

Probably Distant Worlds? Or Answers. Or Dragonsong. Or Melodies of Life. Or Serah's Theme. There's so many good ones, I can't pick a favourite.

Thanks Falk. The thing is, I am debating whether I would play FF XIV so I'm trying to avoid spoilers just in case I go ahead with it. Haha! But yeah, it's already a very solid song.

Think of it as an intro cinematic, really.

And there's a prequel that's out-of-stock/out-of-print everywhere and magically can't be obtained otherwise anyway so you'd just have to read up about it if the lore interests you.

This probably doesn't fit the criteria but probably:

FFXV - Somnus...Just a beautiful track.

Or

FFVIII - Liberi Fatali

I find most of the English vocal tracks in the FF series a bit corny. For instance, Answers doesn't really do much for me.

Crazy Chocobo is hilariously awesome though.

I could still see A Realm Reborn bundled with Heavensward in local stores in my area like this one here. Now that you said that ARR is essentially out of print, I must really decide if I'll get it or not. Darn, my poor wallet...

He doesn't mean ARR. ARR is 2.0, Heavensward is 3.0. He's talking about 1.0.

End of an Era is the ending of 1.0/opening movie of 2.0. You can't really play 1.0 anymore (well, maybe some pirated cloned server or something might still exist somewhere out there, but it would take some serious effort), so it's effectively the opening movie of any version of FFXIV you can currently buy/play.

Considering vocals are a huge part of the song I disagree with the OP saying that One Winged Angel doesn't count.

I'd argue those identify more strongly as choral works. Vocals encompass both choral and soloist (or, well, pop) as a broader umbrella. OP was rather intentionally asking about soloist works, even with the term 'vocals'. (Somnus counts, OMNIS LACRIMA doesn't, for example)

edit: nm it's Lights and Waves, no one ever really knows what goes on in his mind

I love you bro<3

More so if you played 1.0. It's the transition of 1.0 into 2.0.

It's also probably the most (and best in my opinion) contextualized in-game vocal song even when weighed against the entire series.

From its usage as a faint and warped haunting overworld theme signalling the fall of Dalamund all the way to its layered appearance throughout the four phases of Turn 13.

There are very few moments like that hellfire transition to Bahamut using Teraflare as the final leg of the song kicks in and stuff like Akh Morn starts happening in tandem with the lyrics.

Oh, now it makes sense. Sorry I got so confused. So 1.0 is the much-maligned initial release of FF XIV. ARR is when it went through the overhaul. Then I'll go watch it now. Haha!

Look on the bright side, it's still not as confusing as Kingdom Hearts ;)

It sure is. I still want to play the next KH installment though. :D

Already mentioned but I like Answers from FFXIV. However from those that you listed I'd take Melodies of Life from FFIX. Both the English and Japanese versions.

EDIT: I'm a big fan of The Truth Is. It's the vocal version of Eternity Memories of Lightwaves and I've fallen in love with pretty much every version of this theme.

Kiss Me Goodbye was a pretty amazing note to end that game on.
That wins for me.

Answers is great, too, but I have no "attachment" to it since I never really played 15, and never played it before it was relaunched.

EDIT: Oh, I already answered in this thread.
DIdn't realize it was the same one coming back.

Im putting in a completly non-ironic vote for Otherworld here. Usually people just like to mention it because of the novelty of grimy buttrock being in Final Fantasy but I really enjoyed it because it reversed the trend of orchestral latin final boss themes.

Its totally the sort of music Jecht would listen to, too.

I feel like Black Mages 2's JPOP starlet rendition of it retro-actively made Otherworld shittier.

Even if the original had bad English, it was all growls anyway.

The more I listen to it, the more I like the Final Fantasy XI ending theme, Rhapsodies of Vana'diel. It's a fitting song for the end of Final Fantasy XI. Especially with the player vocal choir.

That's the only full version I can find on Youtube. The background image is a spoiler for Rhapsodies of Vana'diel, unfortunately.

Having played XI for basically the entirety of its run, this one absolutely kills me every time I hear it.

Plus I'm in the player chorus.

Answers and all of the primal late-phase music from XIV is the answer.

But I want to also throw in a shout-out to Melodies of Life because it isn't getting enough love here.
