Best way to play Metroid Prime 1-3?

Definitely Metroid Prime Trilogy. The Wiimote controls are just better.

The digital version of Metroid Prime Trilogy on Wii U has the added benefit of significantly reducing the load times (at least in Prime 3, the load times of the other two were already largely eliminated thanks to the increased RAM of the Wii).

Metroid Prime 1 on the Trilogy has some visual effects removed.

Better play the original Gamecube version. On Dolphin.

Was wondering the same thing since I only played 3 lenghtly and never finished any.
But if like some guess and Nintendo re-release Trilogy, it would be perfect, so I'll wait a few months and see.

Been thinking the same thing... might have to find a cheap Wii U soon...
Man, do it. I never got a chance to dig into the Wii's library either and having full access both of those is so nice. The Wii U games look virtually as good as Switch games too. Smash and Mario Kart in HD is very good. Not to mention how great it is at entertaining guests.

It's my favorite console right now. I've even thought about buying a second one in case mine breaks. I feel like it could end up being the most permanent console I've ever owned.

Let me ask this, Metroid Prime 1 is one of my favorite games of all time but I couldn't get into Echoes on the Gamecube back when it came out. Has it aged well/is it worth giving another shot?

The Wii Trillogy is probably the easiest, and most people love the pointer controls.

Personally I still like the GameCube versions, and they look amazing in Dolphin. If you have a GCN controller adapter for the Wii U then you can set it up in Dolphin and you're good to go.

Though for Prime 3 you might be better off playing on a real Wii or Wii U. Last time I tried on Dolphin there were some odd issues with a single floating pixel in the center of the screen. Don't know if they ever fixed that.

I honestly prefer the original GameCube controls myself. I don't mind the pointer controls really but I tend to actually like mechanical and precise feeling control schemes like that, although I know many fans even dislike 1 & 2's controls.

I'd say Dolphin + buy GameCube copies

The Wii trilogy has Wii Remote controls, so it's superior.

Disagree completely on this. Gamecube controls are way more intuitive and comfortable, for the first two Primes at least. I'm probably in the minority on this but oh well.

I'd say find copies of the originals, or just get the trilogy on VC if it's more convenient for you.

hate so much the motion controls that i would not play the MP3 again and never ever touch the wii version of 1 and 2 ... but they got widescreen =/

Have the trilogy on WiiU VC but haven't played it. However! Just finished exams for the semester so I think a playthrough is in order. Recommended difficulty?

Normal. Or whatever you like. I found myself having a huge struggle against a main boss near the end of MP1 and that's it. A big time boss should kick your ass in my book.

I will literally put money on the prime trilogy making its way to switch in one form or another.

At this point, this is what is still stopping me from playing them. Also the fact that I also still have a huge backlog of unplayed titles I'm working through.

Prime trilogy is on my list though, along with Galaxy 1 and 2 (don't hate me, GAF)

Does the Wii version of MP 1 and 2 support GameCube controllers?

Still no.

All of you guys advocating motion controls over a controller are hurting my soul. Play 1 and 2 on the GameCube, the way it was meant to be played.

The way it's meant to be played is both ways.

Tank controls, stopping in your tracks to aim, and lookspring? You can work with them, yes, but there have been innovations in dual stick FPS controls since, most of which the Trilogy release adapts to. It just doesn't feel smooth at all. Thankfully this is all subjective, so no big deal if you enjoy them personally.

Metroid Prime does not have tank controls.

I know the floodgates are opened with me saying this bud Federation Force proved that this control scheme is still perfectly suited for exactly the game that the Prime titles are. Which is not First Person Shooters. They didn't make this because they thought that's the best they could come up with for FPS controls at the time, they did it because that's what the game they were making would work best with.

Some games do require some awkward positions depending on how you're playing. For instance, playing Skyward Sword while sitting on a couch is uncomfortable when you have to point the controller towards the floor and also make sure your coffee table doesn't block the sensor bar.

Good chance to remind everyone that you can put the sensor bar wherever you want.

You can effectively play Prime Trilogy as if it were a Switch in Tabletop mode on a Wii U. Put the GamePad in a stand, put a Sensor Bar or two candles or any bright light equivalent wherever you want and point at those in the most comfortable way for you.

How likely is it we get a HD trilogy release on Switch? Especially now 4 has been announced

Not likely.

Let me ask this, Metroid Prime 1 is one of my favorite games of all time but I couldn't get into Echoes on the Gamecube back when it came out. Has it aged well/is it worth giving another shot?

Yes.

I *definitely* would if I were you. It was much darker, hostile and difficult than Prime 1 which I think could be off-putting at first. That being said, it's a fucking awesome game in the end especially in retrospect.

Yeah, I agree with this. GameCube versions have much better controls, and are much more comfortable to play than the Trilogy versions, especially for long periods of time, which literally require you to aim the Wiimote at the screen the entire time you play. Ugh, so exhausting! Moreover, free aim does not work well in MP 1 and 2 compared to 3, due to them having very small hitboxes for enemies.

They were really designed with lock-on in mind, but even though you can switch that option on, MP 1 and 2 still won't play as well on Wii as on GC, due to to forcing you to use the Wiimore to turn Samus. Yes, you switch to "advanced sensitivity" in the options to make turning a bit snappier, but having to drag the cursor even partway across the screen to turn is still infinitely slower ( and far more awkward) with the Wiimote than simply turning instantly with an analog stick. Also, parts of MP2 were heavily nerfed difficulty wise (a bad thing in my opinion, but it's arguable for sure).

So yeah OP, play MP 1 and 2 on GC, and then suffer through MP 3 with it's (still awkward but admittedly better implemented) Motion Controls. Or just wait for MP Trilogy HD on Switch, which is probably happening.

Definitely the Trilogy on Wii U. While I personally prefer the original controls, a lot of people liked what motion controls brought to the original two games.

Not likely.

Er, why not? I would think an Metroid Prime Trilogy would be a strong possibility, especially with a new entry in the series coming to Switch, and it having been 10 years since the last Prime game (Federation Force doesn't count, come on now). Motion controls for 3 shouldn't be much of an issue on Switch either, thanks to gyro controls. Moreover, Nintendo already dipped their toes into HD remasters with Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD (both of which were fairly successful), so I don't see why they would stop now.

Read into it and my drive doesn't support the dump thing. Oh well, out of luck for now.

Uh, yeah I guess. My TV is really thin and the sensor bar would look absolutely ridiculous sitting ontop of it. I'm not going to rearrange my living room or get rid of furniture to accomodate one video game.

Wii/U trilogy.

Consider setting Prime 2 to the lower difficulty if missile-sponge battles aren't your thing.

I was watching a former member here, now banned, play the prime series via Dolphin Ishiiruka with a bunch of tweaks and it looked absolutely amazing. Would recommend that.

I never got into these games... I think OP inspired me to try it again, because I want to like it, but I just can't.

I'll just finish Hollow Knight.

I play Metroid I (NES), Metroid II (GB), and Super Metroid (SNES) recently. Haven't played anything else in the series other than Zero Mission on the GBA when it launched. What should I play next?

The controls have aged perfectly fine (Trilogy is still the best way to play though).

Wii Remote games remain Wii Remote games.

Not sure what you're asking about headphones. Plug it into your Wii U GamePad and go.
So even though the VC version still requires the Wiimote/nunchuk, you can still get the audio to come through the gamepad? Wanted to be sure before pulling the trigger on the purchase.
Thanks for the reply! =)

Very, very few PC drives can dump Wii games. You need to use a Wii or Wii U, or a friend's Wii or Wii U.

1) Spend $15 on a wireless sensor bar.
2) When you play Prime Trilogy, place the sensor bar somewhere convenient. You can put it away when you're done
3) Profit

On a real Wii via 480p component into a CRT, or on Dolphin.

FWIW Wii U does some stupid scaling/smoothing of Wii (and Gamecube via Nintendont) games even if you select 480p output. This is common knowledge among the retrogaming community.

Might I refer you to my post: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=240714544&postcount=73

You do not have to point anywhere you don't wanna point at.

It's simply not likely because they rarely do this. I didn't say it's 100% impossible. There's just no reason to make anyone think it's more likely than it is. Zelda sells always. HD/3D remasters made sense. Metroid? Not as much.

I think it makes sense from a point of view of simply exposing a new audience to Metroid who have never played it before.

For example, this is my first Nintendo console, and I've heard Metroid is great but have never had a chance to play the first 3 Prime games. Other people in the same boat might think they need to play the first 3 games to join in, so it would make sense to remaster them before 4 comes out.

A bit like the Uncharted collection for PS4 before Uncharted 4 came out.

On booting Wii Mode on Wii U, you can select if you want everything mirrored to the GamePad screen or just stick to the TV. That then goes for everything happening in Wii Mode audio-wise. You can then play on the TV or GamePad screen and do what you want.

MPTrilogy looks crisp af on my TV through Wii U HDMI. Zero complaints.

I'm basing this on how Nintendo usually does things. Not on how others usually do things.

Metroid 1 and 2 on gamecube / gamecube version on wii
Try using the component for the wii . (Pretty cheap)
Or gamecube (warning that thing is expensive)
Not that waggle shit. Games have been designed for gamecube controllers.

Metroid 3 on wii / wii u for better gfx
Game is designed for wiimote

If you keep calling mouse-like aiming "waggle shit" you're just saying you've never played this. There is no waggle in any of these games.
