Best way to play Metroid Prime 1-3?

Hearing the Prime music during the Nintendo Spotlight video hit me right in the feels!

Brings me right back to 2002 - 2003 when I was young and single with a decent job and still living with my parents. I would stay up late at night after work playing Metroid Prime.

I absolutely love Prime 1 and 2. I recall renting 3 at Blockbuster, but never really cared for it too much due to the motion controls.

(Finding a cheap Wii U) is becoming increasingly more difficult in recent weeks and I don't know why.

No more are being made and demand has remained about the same, I'd say.

Refurbished Deluxe models with Nintendoland are still available from Nintendo for $200. That's probably the best deal you're going to find until they run out. Nintendo refurbs are as good as new; you won't be able to tell the difference.

They also have copies of Super Mario 3D World for $15.

I own the trilogy on Wii U, but I'd prefer not playing with motion controls.

Is it possible to play the whole trilogy on Dolphin with a standard controller?

If you keep calling mouse-like aiming "waggle shit" you're just saying you've never played this. There is no waggle in any of these games.
Waggle shit imo couldnt play longer then 1 hour.
Before my hand started to hurt. From being in an awkward position.
What a stupid way to play prime 1 and 2.

I thought it was a great idea to get trilogy on my wii u . As the damn game is playable on the pad itself.

Still forced to use waggle controls.

Dont get the trilogy get the 2 gc games and 1 wii

Best way? Next year when Nintendo inevitably releases Trilogy HD on Switch.

Serious question; where was the waggle, I played the trilogy when it came out but don't remember any waggle. Help me out here

MP3 had waggle, as did Trilogy on Wii U. The oiginal GameCube games obviously didn't.

ignore this troll and get the trilogy

What waggle? You keep avoiding the questions.

Forgot I even had the trilogy on Wii U. Think it was on sale a while back, and I never touched it. But yeah, now's a good time to. Loved Prime 3 on Wii. The controls really were great.

None of the games have any waggle.

Unley you also play DOOM and Quake with waggle controls on PC.

Obviously motion controls will be an issue for some people with physical disabilities but there are also a lot of people who just lack the hand-eye co-ordination to handle them. I've seen adults who couldn't even do the ball-rolling segments in Mario Galaxy. Some people just can't get their head around it for whatever reason.

It's a shame because the pointer controls make Prime trilogy a vastly smoother experience.

My gripe with the Wii versions of Prime 1 and 2 is that, because turning around is an indirect input through aiming, it's harder to gauge how much you have turned and motion becomes a less deliberate thing.
This results for me in getting lost more often and having to rely more on the map, which is a bummer.
But the widescreen and better textures make up for it.
Also, yeah, for people with disabilities traditional controls should be offered.

Get the Trilogy on Wii or Wii U. I'd recommend Dolphin but the games don't run particularly well on it, with lots of stuttering and other glitches.

Trilogy on Wii U through the eShop download for even better (already trivial) load-times.

Make sure to disable free-aim for Prime 1+2 (free aim lets you point anywhere even while locked on which 1+2 weren't designed around so they're better played with that off, specifically when encountering certain enemies) and generally set motion sensitivity to "pro" or "advanced" or whatever the terminology is.

Sit back and dive into greatness.

Thanks for the tip!
Helped a lot.
:)

My contrarian advice is to play each game with the controller it was designed to use.

Prime 1 & 2 were built around the gamecube controller. Prime 3 was built around the wiimote and nunchuck. The games just play better when you use the intended control scheme, imo.

I don't care for the pointer controls and my gamecube freezes up constantly, I'm just waiting for the Switch VC versions (of 1 & 2) which are almost certain to appear before prime 4.

While my vote also goes to Metroid Prime Trilogy it has to be said that the difficulty of Metroid Prime 2: Echoes was lowered for the Trilogy version. I think it's a shame that they didn't include the option to play with the original difficulty, since the unusually hard difficulty kind of fits the unusually dark tone of the game - Echoes serves as the Majora's Mask or The Empire Strikes Back of the Prime trilogy.

Echoes is still plenty hard and challenging.

Sorry...what about pointing at a TV hurts your wrists?

Pointing the wiimote at the screen for the length of time required to play the game is not comfortable at all. I have no idea how anyone plays these games with the wiimote controls and enjoys it. I had to rest my arm on a pillow the entire time I played Prime 3, it was stupid.

I would not recommend playing Prime 1 and 2 on the Wii. 3 you just have to soldier through.

Refer to my previous post here explaining that you don't have to point anywhere you don't want to point.

Dude, what are you talking about? I played through all of MP3 with the wiimote and nun-chuck resting in my lap. You barely have to move your wrist to move the pointer.

Generally speaking, yes, but the original version was on a different level.

Only chumps fight the Boost Guardian in a fair fight!

You can cheese a bunch of bosses in this game by sequence breaking. :) The funniest is probably shooting Jump Guardian at his spawn point so he starts the actual battle at 1 HP. Or fighting Chykka while you run across the dark water Jesus-style. Oh...! Or by screw attacking the space between the Mutated Emperor Ing's hind legs for massive damage!

I love you, Echoes.

I'll add my vote for the Prime Trilogy version. While there's no accounting for taste, I find the fact that the original GameCube versions didn't allow you to look around your environment while walking to be an objective flaw in the games. The fluidity afforded by the Wii remote controls in the Trilogy version is unparalleled in the series. I'd also add that the Trilogy versions add true widescreen (which I know can be hacked into the emulated version) and bloom lighting to render these the best versions overall.

Once you've completed the Prime Trilogy version, you might still be tempted to track down an original Prime disc for GameCube to try out sequence breaking. It's not essential, but can be quite fun.

I played the prime trilogy on Wii a couple years ago back to back to back and loved the pointer controls. That would be my recommendation. Prime 1 is probably in my top 10 games now.

Glad to see I'm not alone in disliking the motion controls. I loved the first 2 and never played 3 because the controls murdered the fun for me.

Use the Wii Trilogy with pointer controls.

Once you get used to (is gong to be quick) you will love it.

Ignore the ones saying is uncomfortable or "waggle".

Dolphin Wii or Gamecube versions. No need to deal with a Wii on a CRT or a Wii U for too long. Just rip the games and play them comfortably however you like.

Not sure if it's been mentioned, but the Trilogy ports of 1 & 2 lose some of the arm cannon beam effects (freezing up when using the Ice Beam, emanating electricity when using the Wave Beam) due to the fact that they were animated specifically for a non-moving arm cannon. There are also some wonky effects with the water in MP1.

The motion controls are a really neat novelty and a fun legitimate way to play, but I still always preferred the gamecube controllers. It's just more relaxing. It has always bothered me that the Trilogy did not support gamecube controllers. I'd like the option.

Trilogy is still a solid choice, though. I'll probably have a run at it sometime in the next couple years.

:( I loved those effects.

apparently you can get the prime trilogy on dolphin and have your keyboard and mouse mimic the wiimote. never tried it personally, hell never done any emulation besides GBA, nut prime on a keyboard sounds really awesome in addition to all the graphical updates

Is there a good KBM or Steam Controller setup for either the trilogy or the originals on Dolphin? I have a Dolphinbar somewhere, but it doesn't work great with my current setup due to the cord length.

I have the digital trilogy on WiiU. I am interested in seeimg it in HD. Did a few searches for it and only seem to come across what I deem shady DL links and forums with broken ISO files that require a lot of "fixing" to play. Even my go to places fir emulation doesn't seem to have the actual DL's
Any suggestions?
