Beyond Two Souls PS4 vs PS3 Frame-Rate Test - Digital Foundry

It should not be 60 fps. This is a game where the framerate is "cinematic" intentionally.

Very strange release. Almost no advertising for this one, while GOW 3 on the other hand had a great advertising campaign and probably sold decent.

Why didn't they just wait till the Heavy Rain remaster? I would be hyped for it, but a 30fps remaster that has black borders is a no go. Sounds like a cheap cash in, what's really strange, because there is a large audience that never had a PS3 and would probably be interested in this game.

Considering Cage's push to make his games like films, it's entirely possible 30fps and a 21:9 aspect ratio are deliberate choices.

That said, it seems like a pretty barebones remaster in general anyway.

Doesn't even look that different to me either

So only main reason I can see to buy this is the chronological order thing.

Then why didn't he make it 24 fps

.

Any game* objectively benefits from 60fps whether its from response time or gameplay fluidity. I'm not all that bothered by some games not targeting 60fps this gen (apart from some genres like FPS) but for remasters, it's the minimum I expect. Using the "filmic/cinematic look" is just a cop-out IMO.

*Apart from South Park stick of truth.

If you watch the framerate test, you will see he did make it 24 fps!

Lol what a mess.

No thank you Mr Cage. No thank you.
I dont get it how is this a mess?
Yes - it's another remaster. But it's safe to say that Beyond: Two Souls had serious performance issues on PlayStation 3, and all the kinks are ironed out on PS4. Plus there are a number of visual upgrades in place too

30fps and still "cinematic" borders with no option to take them off :/

To be honest, you could partly tell what type of remaster it was going to be with the surprise release date announcement + price. Probably just to get people to buy it who didn't manage to buy it first time round.
So a good remaster?

It's not; I think it's just hyperbole on that person's part, but generally speaking I would have liked a few things to come with the remaster (considering the price point of course, I'm not surprised why), but ideally:

- An option to take off black borders
- An option for a 60fps target frame rate

Considering it is a remaster on much more powerful hardware I thought at least the second option would be a given. Of course that may require much more effort so I guess I do have to factor budget and time costs into account particularly as this is done all in house, and not out-sourced to an external studio like Bluepoint, but yeah, in an ideal world I guess.

So a good remaster?

I don't want to say "port" type remaster since that would imply no changes at all, but when you compare it to some great remasters like Uncharted, or Metro, then I wouldn't say good.

I'd say it's an "ok" remaster. Nothing special nor worthy of good. Of course it's important to understand that this is not my final verdict as we still haven't seen the full Face-Off and any other possible visual enhancements, but this is just first impressions.

Because 24fps would produce a juddery mess on any display that doesn't have a 24p mode?

I'd think that all displays made over the last years support 24hz. Otherwise, they would be bad for playing actual movies.

Some game should really run in 1080p@24, just for the lulz.

never got round to playing this on PS3 so will definitely be getting it on PS4. happy to see it now has a solid framerate and looks a lot cleaner. definitely not a game that needs 60fps.

Played it for about 3 hours last night and didn't even notice the black borders were still there *shrug*

30fps isn't cinematic tho.

PS3 definitive version confirmed, PS4 fail.

No option to remove the borders yet? I might buy it again to play the story in order if they got rid of them.

It is a stealth release, of course they didn't put any effort into it.

I am personally perfectly fine with a simple but solid port/remaster, given that the game's price is quite reasonable compared to other remasters.

Well that's just a lie. They would never make it 60 fps even if they could, because this type of game benefits nothing from it. Locked 30 fps with motion blur is perfectly suitable, especially when it allows you to upgrade visuals elsewhere, which has a much bigger benefit on this type of game than 60 fps would have. Even if you just watch twitch streams the game looks very fluid on PS4. There really is not much of a point. Also, it's 29,99 and you even get a discount on HR.

It's not even true as they completely changed some scenes assets and textures (even added new ones). Particle effects are highly improved, the hair animates much faster and it looks more fluid. A lot of stuff like that.

Aliasing and a stronger (ugly as fuck) bloom are what jumped out at me in that video, honestly, even before the 30fps.
I didn't play it on PS3, but i'll probably skip it again.

The comparison screenshots look fantastic. And cinematic borders don't bother me at all (if they are bothered you don't have a big enough TV).

Looks like one of the better remasters for adding and improving environment assets. I think they (still don't know if QD or someone else did this) should've implemented TAA and fine tuned the scenes with chunky self-shadowing with the comfortable 30fps cap though.

There's some strangeness with DoF strength and post-process buffer filtering they should patch at least and fix before the Blu-ray release.

Its 29.99 and basically stealth launched...i didn't think it was gonna be all that huge an effort, you can kinda tell with these things. Similar to Dishonored HD

30 fps is fine for this game. Interested in seeing how the game holds up on PS4, I thought it was extremely impressive on PS3.

Someone should check the credits and see if anyone assisted with the remaster.

Dishonored was a pretty poor remaster, no?

Pretty much what I expected out of this release.

There is an option to run Godzilla at 24fps with filters down from 60.

I don't understand how people don't understand that "black borders" is an artistic choice, like color palette or scene composition or the actual story of the game, not a technical drawback that needs to be "fixed". You can still disagree with them, but at least do so for the right reasons.
