Biggest "game changer" this gen so far

This thread is about the feature itself, not the tech behind the feature. The feature, i.e. backwards compatibility, is the same in both cases, possibly even a bit more comprehensive in the WiiU's case if I remember correctly.

It's not the same though. The Xbox One's backwards compatibility doesn't boot the console into an Xbox 360 mode, isolating you from all the other OS level features the new console enjoys. On X1 360 can be snapped alongside other apps, you can share screens/videos of the to your activity feed, you can stream them over Twitch etc. You havce access to not only 360 parties and chat, but also still X1 parties too.

They're lacking in terms of the games right now, but the feature itself is far more impressively implemented than the standard "put an Xbox inside your Xbox" solution for BC.

Actual new features: Off-tv play.

Wouldn't the PSP prevent this being an actual new feature, rather than a now widespread one?

Rest mode -- the fact that my PS4 will wake up and download updates and entire games while I'm at work is really nice

Suspend / resume -- borderline game change. I'm in and out of games faster than I am on my PC

Share button -- You know how so many crazy things happen that you wish you could show your friends? Well now you can without having to buy extra recording equipment or, in the case of PC games, having to run CPU intensive recording software in the background.

For me its clip/screenshot sharing. Especially on the X1, being able to instantly save a 30 second clip of something cool really changed the game IMO. I love sharing clips and watching friends' clips.

The other would be suspend/resume on both systems.

I'm not personally involved but i'd say 360 emulation with Xbox One. Nothing comes even close to that.

I know it's all semantics but isn't it funny that the consoles biggest game changer is a feature that's been available for 14 years?

I was such a supporter of the "Stop bitchin about backwards compatibility when you're also bitchin about price! I'd rather take up the shelf space so a console can be affordable and supported!" But then Microsoft twirled their dick and came up with a free update... I don't know how to feel.

Does it has to be console related?

Steam refunds is a pretty big thing imo

Yeah, Steam's revamped refund policy would get my vote if this thread weren't limited to consoles. A consumer-friendly refund system on the PC's largest DD service, one which for over a decade only approved post-release refunds if legally required, is the very definition of a big deal.

Suspend/Resume - Always listed as a must have feature for handheld RPGs. Now the feature exists on consoles so lets have some console RPGs. It was really useful in my FFX playthrough.

I'm pretty sure the feature didn't extend to every game on the console before (or at least, almost every game). Streaming has been a part of PC gaming for quite a while now, and not just for specific games.

I'd say 8GB RAM. By finally putting enough RAM in a console it has enabled them to do all sorts of things. I'm pretty sure the 'share' button functionality wouldn't be possible if not for the memory allocated to it.

This is my choice now that you put it like that. Last gen that 512MB made all sort of multi tasking harder than it should be.

lag-free 60fps streaming?

Well, I was just thinking about it from the perspective of the share button not qualifying as new. Wii U's off TV play is obviously way better than the PSP was (and quite a but better than PS4 and XB1 in regards to lag/stability) but it's not really brand new, in the way that the console's share functions aren't brand new either.

But yea, I guess it's something that wasn't really a thing in PC land either... whereas everything regarding the share button (other than Share Play) is only really new to consoles.

it kind of is brand new though, at least the successful implementation of the tech

even still something doesn't necessarily have to be brand new to be a big game changer. our discussion is evidence of that. for instance the biggest game changer for me was the internet browser on the Wii U coupled with the gamepad. sure, almost every console now has an internet browser but the gamepad actually makes it viable to use on a regular basis, which is game changing for me.

Hdmi-Cec on ps4. One press of the playstation button on the ds4 and the receiver and tv turn on and set the correct inputs automatically. All with no need to touch a remote at all.
Without needing extra hardware like cameras and sensors all over the room either.
It just doesn't get any more convenient.
Suspend/Resume is a close second - being able to boot straight into a game at the exact spot you left at is great.
Pretty nice feature, I've since packed up my receiver and only have the consoles plugged in directly to the tv, but I'll be sure to check it out when I plug it back in.

Native broadcasting was the biggest thing for me, then I'd say the share button which gives you access to game captures a-la screens and video, Then we have shareplay which was one of the biggest and most innovative features released on a console for a while.

I think this gen has had the best and most innovative gameplay related features on a console ever. Even remote play has been improved quite a bit from last gen with 60fps gameplay over the internet. Suspend resume (on the PS4 at least) is pretty snappy and of course we can't forget PSNOW, it works pretty well on a non 56k connection (in 2015) and it caters mostly to persons who don't have a PS3/4.

Quite a few excellent features all round.

Oh, I'm not arguing against it being a game changer. Hell, my first post in this thread was to back up someone who chose X1 BC. It's just that the Corronchilejano made an explicit distinct between a feature being "new" vs "mainstream". I was just wondering why Off-TV play would be new, whilst the share button wouldn't.

ahhhh, ok I got you know

the ever-increasing accessibility and capabilities of PC gaming

if I have to go with a single specific feature, I'd go with off-TV/streamed gameplay, a function I utilize loads on every platform I've owned that supports it. I play PC games on my tablet and Wii U games on the controller regularly.

VR is gonna be the big one for me

Wii U gamepad.

Off screen play is awesome.
having second screen for things like maps and inventory is also really useful.
Hiding UI from TV by moving all info to gamepad is cool.

Shame that there are not too many games that make great use of it.

& Shame it is unlikely to be taken forward in any future consoles.

*The Share Button which covers:
-Share Play
-Screenshot Capture
-Instant Way to start Broadcasting Live
-Recording Video Footage

*Native Remote Play Support:
It's not a tiny feature like it was on PS3 when it was barely supported or a 1/2 gimmick like it is on Wii U where it's not only limited to only being a local feature (Unlike the Wii U you can Remote Play over the Internet on PS3/PS4) but it's also limited by whatever "innovations" the tablet may have (Any Wii U game that uses the gamepad in a significant way can't be played off screen on the tablet) because on the PS4 we the beautiful 60FPS Remote Play for PS Vita,PS Vita TV,and Sony Xperia Z2/Z3 and about 99% of the PS4 library supports the function.

*The PS Vita:
Seriously hands down my favorite Portable System! The only thing that would make this system perfect is actually getting more meaningful 1st Party and Western Support and getting rid of the Back Touch Pad to add an L2 and R2 Buttons but outside of those two things the system is such a beauty to me.

Those four int he OP are all big.

For me, Suspend/Resume is huge. It means I spend less time waiting for a game to load and more time actually playing it... And it gives me the ability to play a game, put it down, and then pick up right where I was and I love this.

Screenshots and videos is also great.. Something I never knew I'd love as much until I had it. When my friends and I played GTA Online together, every night we'd have a bunch fo "Record Thats!" and then the next day, send our videos to each other.

Also, having everything available digitally... Though that was pretty common on the 360/PS3 as well at the end of the gen, I'm just happy to have it.

Miiverse + Splatoon has made one of the most genuine gaming communities on consoles, its also given the game absurd fan appeal and a viral self-propagating nature. Its a disease!

Quick Start, so that you never have to boot into the WiiU's molasses-slow OS. I wish all consoles had this.

Suspend. On both my Vita and my PS4, that shit is a godsend. For training purposes in fighters, it's heaven to boot up and go right back into the lab. For Vita stuff, it's made games like Dragon's Crown even more enjoyable to slay a few orcs and back out on my commute. Same thing with the 3DS, too.

Streaming is great, but I don't use it as much as I used to. However, that's only because I started buying real equipment, so it was a gateway more than anything, but a necessary one at that.

Suspend/resume.

Watching a movie or TV show and someone needs to make a hot drink or a ciggy?
I can just resume my game of KI and then still switch back to whatever we were watching when they come back.

That's an amazing thing for a console to be able to do.

The headphone jack on the PS4 Dualshock. It's really really convenient (although it seems to drain on the battery). Suspend/resume is a close second, but I don't really like to keep it in standby, I already waste enough electricity as it is.

While it's a boring response. Honestly, speed has been the biggest game changer for me.
How quickly I can go to the console main menu, check a message or join a party or check a screeshot I just took is awesome. Comming from playing mostly on Ps3 where everything was very slow it just feels really smooth. I can check the store in seconds instead of having to wait like 5 minutes for it load!

Others I liked:

Share is great. I enjoy taking Screenshots and for the first time it's easy to do on consoles.

Suspend/Resume: Really cool, specially if you can't play for several hours at a time. It's nice to be able to combe back later and instantly continue from the exact same point

Wlee "game changer" is when when I turn on the xbox and the OS needs to update... then when i go tot play a game that too needs an update, so I have to wait flipping hours with my shitty Internet. So it's changing the game by leaving it to update, whilst I go off and so something else entirely

Recording clips and making screenshots. Use it all the time and always missed it on the 360 when something cool happend.

I don't use Suspend/Resume too much on either the PS4 or X1, so I'll say the share/livestreaming/recording capabilities.

I love recording all the fantastic little gameplay moments that happen. Rocket League recently has been filling up my HDD with all the clips.

Feeling I get too old for this shit. And with shit I mean convoluted home menus, share buttons no one needs and other unnecessary stuff like the touch pad.

Share Play/Remote Play - this is next level stuff and nothing compares IMO.

Having someone jump on my console (or vice versa) and play games you don't own is a game changer and a killer current-gen feature. Frankly - it isn't advertised enough.

I play PS4 games on my ONE PLUS ONE smart phone. That's incredible!!!

Spotify on PS4

Multitasking. Love to stop the game at any time to go watch a something and go back to the game.
Then, clips, screeshots and onedrive/youtube upload.

Definitely Off-tv play with the wii-u and to a lesser extent ps4+vita
I appreciate a lot of the features this gen has brought like suspend/resume, screen shots, etc., but being married with two kids, the above is definitely the biggest deal for me. My gaming time has increased expotentially as a result.

Cant the xbox one download game/system updates while its in rest mode? It works like this on the ps4 and its so much better than on the ps3.

Yeah the headphone Jack is a big one for me as its late at night and everyone is in bed and I can just watch Po.....Netflix as loud as I want without waking anyone up

Yes if you leave the power on, which means leaving the power on for an Xbox, 2 sky boxes, blu ray player, TV and a wireless TV sender. Old houses don't have many wall outlets
