Biggest shitstorm of the generation?

I wasn't on the forums at the time but the PSN shutdown must have been a shitstorm of enormous proportion. The fact that it lasted as long as it did, didn't help. The RROD is my own personal shitstorm. Three 360s. All dead.

Mass effect 3's ending shitstorm in bioware forum was epic

Didn't even think of this. Definitely up there for the generation. Every message board was exploding, every site reporting on it, and the developers actually putting out/altering game content to try and put out the fire. Pretty insane that it reached that level.

Sony: PSN hacking and late relays of info to the people effected. $600 price point at launch.

Microsoft: RROD and widespread hardware failure, the majority of early adopters eventually got a bricked console.

Nintendo: Horribly barren software for the last two years of it's life, left out to die after huge success.

These are pretty spot on. Surprised you're the first to mention the $600 price point. I think that's the biggest of all the consoles by far.

ME3 ending is pretty close though.

yeah, PSN hack was resolved and they hyperbole destroyed, FF13 turned out to be a shit game so the fans ended up justified in the end, but RROD is by far the worst, the fact that MS did so knowingly and willingly sold a defective product is much much worse. I'd take a month of no online and a shit game over a bricked console any day

For 'should have', I really think Bethesda's PS3 releases should have gathered far more attention than they did.

There was a minor amount of complaining over Skyrim, but the PS3 version of that still won multiple GOTY awards without so much of a mention of how the game was absolutely broken, and Fallout 3 and New Vegas were both just as bad and seemed to get off scot free.

I didn't even own or cared about the PS3 at the time of the PSN outage, wasn't on gaf but word travelled out fast and it was generally known that PSN was hacked. When that kind of mindset gets into ignorant consumers heads they don't care about giving the system a second chance. It gave fanboys excuses to avoid a PS3 and gave the 360 heavy leverage (and for good reason).

Hell, I still run into people who think that Live is worth paying for because it doesn't get hacked. Totally don't remember the incident with Xbox and Fifa. Not to the same level though. An outage for 23 days with poor PR was unacceptable.

I think that RROD is worse as I expect my consoles to survive for more than 3 years but I wasn't here for the PSN outages so I would be kind of biased. If PSN was gone for 23 days now, yikes. There would be meltdowns.

Definitely the biggest fallout from the generation.

Mass Effect 3, FFXIII, Bayonetta 2 and all this tiny stuff was like just the hardcore gaming forums and communities that it reached. It didn't concern most casuals. I don't even care for either FFXIII or Bayonetta 2.

PSN Outage was way worse since it affected 77 million users between PS3 and PSP.

I still think the aftermath was beautiful though. That E3 at 2011 for Sony convinced me to get a PS3, even after all the fallout. I think I must have been the only insane one, haha but don't regret it since then. I think it would have been worse if I got one before the outage and had to deal with no online.

1/ RROD

2/ Non-Sony PS2 IP moving to the 360, i.e. Final Fantasy XIII, Tekken 6 and Devil May Cry 4.

1 caused the most damage. 2 had some entertainment value to it, because noone was 'really' hurt.

Mass Effect 3 ending without a doubt. It was picked up by mainstream media outlets like CNN and Forbes and random outlets that you wouldn't ever think of like the California Literary Review(?).

The game itself cannot ever be discussed without mentioning the ending.

Being a recipient of Mass Effect 3 upon launch, the ending shitstorm blew up right in my face. The patch job was a lot of nonsense too.

With the transition into the Eighth Generation of gaming currently dominated by the XBox One shitstorm, I thought it would be interesting to look back on the biggest shitstorm of the generation we are leaving behind.

Two questions, basically:

(1) What was the biggest shitstorm of the generation?

What story - more than any other - exploded into rage, negativity and chaos? You could consider it just on GAF - or consider a wider view such as negative stories that reached the mainstream press.

(2) What should have been the biggest shitstorm of the generation?

Is there a story that you thought was absolutely horrendous - but it never reached the infamy that it deserved? Something terrible done by someone or something in the games industry that should have caused tremendous uproar and backlash - but didn't to any significant degree?

--

I'll add my answers in a post later so not to clog up the OP. I'll also ask that the XBox One shitstorm be considered eighth generation and not seventh - so it doesn't dominate the answers.

PSN outage was the biggest shit storm.

Red ring should have been and it wasn't. Grossly overlooked.

.

Not the same level because it's not the same thing. Phishing isn't hacking. The 23 day outage wasn't the worst part for me. It was the 7 days that they waited to inform everyone that is the real crime. But thanks to them, I've removed my CC from every single service. Now I just use pre-paid cards.

FF13 on X360 ?!?!
Not at all !

The best one of this generation (for me) its the RROD.
I bet we bought at least two X360 ... I'm at 3 :(

#1 - PSN outage n hax
#2 - FFXIII on 360
#3 - Mass Effect 3 ending
#4 - One third of 360s RROD
#5 - Twilight Princess 8.8, the day I revoked my Nintendo fanboyship

Wii still being the best selling console

For launching at a lower price point with some neat games from strong franchises, and a gimmick that was strategically promoted and tried to do something differently (or base an entire console on something new and unique), I'm not surprised it ended up selling 99 millions units and became a craze.

My mom even bought one, and she has no interest in video games in general.

The bigger surprise was PS3 matching 360 LTD sales, despite launching a year after at a higher pricepoint, little to no games at launch and $599 at launch, and losing most if not all third party exclusives. Negative PR all around, corporate arrogance, Crazy Ken and his stupid ****ing quotes, PSN outage, oh man what a disaster.

Yet they managed to turn that around, build SCEW, and emerge in a stronger position coming out.

To me RROD was much worse than the PSN hack. I mean RROD went on for years before they really fixed it. That's pretty insane.

Some people have short memories. Nothing has come close to RROD. FF13 on 360 was funny, and PSN outage was awful, but you could still at least play other single player games. RROD was disastrous, I honestly don't know how anyone would trust a launch console from them again.

My PS1, PS2, and PS3 all had their lasers fail within 5 years of purchase. I bet the failure rate on first-generation PS1 lasers is at least as high as RROD. How is that for short memory?

Maybe not the biggest, but pretty crazy and entertaining.

The funny thing is Bayonetta 2 would not be possible without Nintendo, we should be thanking Nintendo.
This shit right here was probably the biggest for me. People just don't do their research anymore.

The PSN outage was probably the biggest this gen though. But it didn't really affect me too much.

I'd say it's a tie between the PSN hack and RROD. You can't really compare the two, but they each suck in their own right. I'd go insane if I wanted to play something but had the damn RROD on my 360, likewise I'd be livid if my CC info was stolen and used. Both just really annoying inconveniences that you shouldn't necessarily have to deal with if things were done right from the beginning.

Replacing your brake pads and buying a new car are not the same thing.

Things not based around an individual game - PSN hack or RROD.

Things based around a game - Mass Effect 3/Sim City tied - based solely on the level of shitstorm, at least Mass Effect 3 functioned as a game.

Honorable mentions for various DLC/Online pass related ones. Dead Space 3,Arkham City Catwoman etc.

(1) What was the biggest shitstorm of the generation?
$599? Sony was getting torn apart left and right and were pretty much a laughing stock at the start of the gen. Their sales were weak for quite a while and they haven't dominated to the extent they did with PS2. They made a lot of mistakes but $599 seemed to be the one that made a lot of people turn their back on them.

(2) What should have been the biggest shitstorm of the generation?

RROD. Those things were just dying left and right. They were coming back from repair centers just as shitty as they went in and dying after a week or two. Someone should have been fired or stepped down for this. Just "y'know, things break" the single most disgusting line I've ever heard from a company in regards to their product being broken.

Red ring was a slow burn. PSN was all anybody talked about for weeks while it was going.

Honorable mention to Jesus Bynum.

Ball Physics in Pinball Arcade.
Don't fucking deny it.

Second place is the camera in Pinball Arcade.
Seriously, how can anyone play this?

RROD doesn't even come close to Fifa 13 xbox hack and psn hack. That shit was fucking scary.

Those two were the worse shit hands down this generation.
