you should have paid it forward and stole someone else's bike
That is incredibly illegal, even to keep out trespassers.
The dude came back. That's evidence enough.
I had a bike stolen once, wanted to get it back built my parents said that if I took it back the thief could tell the police I stole it even if had evidence I bought it. Sigh.. :/
So the assumption everyone is making is that this is in fact the OP's bike and there couldn't possibly be an identical bike within a 2 mile radius?
I'm not sure their logic is sound on that one.

If I'm reading correctly, thief isn't sure it was the original owner who took it. I'd hide it for a while or maybe sell it.
These are very good questions...when I took the bike, he parked it outside an apartment building and may or may not have seen me take it but I didn't see him then. But if he didn't see me take it, why would he come back here? Guess he did see me. And there's no way he followed me home, since I purposefully took a crazy route back and stopped at a couple out of the way places, and he only showed up on foot an hour later, the right time for walking 2 miles from where he was to my place. No way he followed me and didn't know where I lived otherwise. What if he witnessed OP taking his bike and followed him home? Also, what would lead him to believe OP stole the bike back if it was missing?
I think it is actually legal to steal your shit back. At least that's my recollection of first year crim law.

I'm assuming he's familiar with his own bike and can identify it as his based on little things like scratches, scuffs and accessories etc.
Does "I thought it was mine" hold up in a court of law?
I just got really lucky. The guy disappeared when I first spotted him but got stuck at a red light. But after patrolling the block a little, I spotted it just sitting there, sans thief. How did you happen upon the bike then after you had seen it on the road but lost it again when attempting to tail? Could he not have happened upon it in the same manner you did?
It can, yes. Depending upon the jurisdiction.Does "I thought it was mine" hold up in a court of law?

then cover it up, and place the bike so that he'll walk on the trap to get it back. Then just fill it up again afterwards while he's down there, problem solved.
Be careful OP, if he came back then you can assume he's willing to get violent over this. People are crazy these days, you don't know if he'll bring a blade or has access to a gun. Personally, I'd be worried, stay safe.
Thieves are pure scum.
baller move, the the thief also has balls to come to your house again. i can't decide which is more baller.
Will you kill him after he kills you?
I kid, obviously, but you shouldn't have done that, IMO. Just... Let it go. Best not fuck with criminals.
Glad you got it back, but be careful. You've pissed him off and he has your saw. Eep.
That might make sense if the saw didn't disappear as well. What if you bought the bike stolen, and it was originally his, and then he was just stealing it back the first time?
That might make sense if the saw didn't disappear as well.
If I was the OP I would set up a motion camera for the next couple days to shoot outside my front window.

What in the name!? He took your bike and comes to your house like it was his? Lmao! The audacity!
