Billiards player makes unbelievable shots during game

It's great when the people doing commentary have no clue what the hell is going on.

Then he drops the line "If someone did that shot to me, I'd have to kill myself."

So not trying to downplay this but those looked like a lot of shots most professional pool players should be able to make. Am I missing something? Don't get me wrong that one shot that bounced around the entire table through all the other balls to sink the corner pocket was fucking hot but... curving a ball or anything isn't exactly mind blowing for guys of that level.

I thought the first shot where he bounced the two balls off each other so the solid would be in the right position for the rebound was pretty good. I don't watch professional pool, though.

Maybe you've watched too many staged tricks to appreciate shots done on a competitive match.

Professionals at this level rarely try that because if you miss, you have little control of the cue ball - so the opponents can take advantage.

I know nothing of competitive billiards, but the announcers were pretty blown away by it. So I got to imagine they were pretty impressive shots.

Which shot am I supposed to be impressed by? I saw 2 very impressive shots. Was it the english to get the 2?

3 impressive shots. The double combo back into the pocket on the first. The Looooooooong masse shot and then the fucking geometry jackpot before the final shot.

Any of those is top level, but that last one is just beyond that. You don't see that; the commentary reactions tell you how you don't see that.

Yeah, I mean what are the physics behind it?

I'm garbage at pool but if you hit the ball a little lower than centre you're put backspin on it which will make it stop when it connects with another ball. Likewise hit it above centre to make it continue moving forward afterwards

someone else can correct me if I'm wrong

How does the white ball just stop in tracks like that in the second shot?

That's just basic physics man, if one ball has enough momentum and the collision has a center line along with the speed of the ball, is of short duration and relatively elastic, it will transfer all of its momentum the colliding ball. This happens all the time in billiards.

British player too.

I'm reasonably sure bouncing a ball off of four cushions is not something totally out of this world in snooker. Might be much more rare in pool due to the tighter space?

The white ball is struck slightly below centre with the cue tip and it kills the forward momentum when the white strikes the object ball. It works best when its a full on straight shot as you can see in the gif.

It takes a lot of practice to actually hit the cue ball where you actually mean to hit it.

I'm the furthest thing from an expert on this, but if you watch how he hits the ball, he's striking it low so it adds backspin (i.e. the ball is spinning towards where it came from). He makes sure to hit it hard enough that it's still on the ball when it makes full contact with the object ball that the spin holds the ball in place rather than continuing on (if he added too much it would start coming back towards him). If you spend some time on a table and play around with different spins the cue ball's behavior makes intuitive sense pretty quickly.

Tl;dr hitting the cue ball at a particular point produces spin.

Fascinating. From your link it seems to get it to stop dead you actually need zero spin but instead you make the ball slide across the table. The cue ball then needs to strike the next ball dead on to transfer all the momentum to it. Given the length of the shot, presumably he did have to put on some backspin so it would become a slide by the time it strikes the other ball.
