Bionic Commando 2009's multiplayer is an underrated and beautiful (hidden?) gem.

Largely because it was the multiplayer component to a game that bombed and received a tepid critical response and whose community moved on after three weeks. Or at least, I like to think it was because most people weren't exposed to it and not because most people didn't enjoy it.

And while it's clear that the multiplayer wasn't where the development team was pouring most of their energy, it was a perfect storm of a beautiful mechanic intended for a single player complimenting some simple multiplayer ideas and fun map layouts to create something special.

So, what's so great about it?

Simple Controls With Great Flexibility: Bionic Commando is as vanilla as they come. It's basically a Quake styled weapon/health pick-up game with a swinging and zipline mechanic. The character models are all brightly colored Sentai knock-offs that stand out well with their environments and the swinging, after a small adjustment period, is easy enough to get a hang of. Weapon pick-ups come in your typical rocket launcher, shotgun, machine gun, etc flavor and, outside of CTF, the game doesn't ask you to do much other than to roam the maps and kill your enemies.

The real trick, though, comes in getting the most out of the grappling arm. When you can manage to get the most momentum out of your swings or the furthest reach out of your zipline, that's when the game really comes into it's own. Picks-ups suddenly become faster to reach and the maps suddenly feel smaller and faster to traverse despite their size. The arm in BC is what elevates those good players that are capable of zoning the pick-ups, chasing players down and getting the clutch escapes.

Truly Vertical Combat: There's a reason BC has a map that's comprised of a singular, tall building surrounded by an ocean. Sometimes, the best way to play Bionic Commando is to have two players hanging on the side of a skyscraper and trying to kill each other while also trying to prevent the onset gravity. Remember the Dubai sequence in Ghost Protocol? Think that, except with guns and players constantly lunging at each other. This usually leads to some incredibly awkward, incredibly stupid, yet incredibly hilarious mid air firefights that are truly unique to the game. And sometimes it's not even about fighting on the side of a building. Sometimes the best option is to fight at the edge of a roof, two players constantly jumping off and rappelling back up, using that 90 degree angle as a form of improvised cover.

Either way, the game facilitates this too in it's weapon pick ups and level design. Weapon and health pick ups are generally strewn across the various elevations of most maps(sometimes even hanging off the sides of buildings) and with ruined cities being the name of the game, that often means a whole lot of upward traversal to get what you need, whether that be a pick up or an enemy's head.

A Goofy Animation System: This is sort of a personal aside and speaks more to the game's presentation, but one of the best feelings in the world is running towards the camera and hopping off a building only to have your character do a little backflip. Even better if that backflip is immediately followed up in mid air by a grenade launcher shot that hits one of your pursuers. Or when you're locked in a chase with someone who decides to jump off a building themselves, causing you to chase after with a swan dive(which retains full aiming control). Or that little twirl your character does mid air after a well done, high momentum release of the grappling hook. It's these little flourishes that go a long way to giving the player the sense that this is a game that places a high priority on movement.

Zipeline Kicks: The game lets you attach your grappling arm to your enemies, reel towards them and dropkick them. Even when both players are mid-air. It doesn't do much damage and it's often dangerous depending on the situation.

But it's fucking hilarious. And sometimes, on the right map, in the right scenario, it's basically a Smash Bros.-esque ringout to either the ocean or a bottomless pit.

So why am I bringing this up now? Because Bionic Commando is 2.50 on Steam and the chances of it going any lower are probably kind of slim. And while online multiplayer no longer works through the game's interface proper(Capcom or Grin for some reason opted out of using GFWL or Steam and decided to run their own authentication servers. Which means these servers that checked for player logins were shut down years ago), online play is possible with a program such as Hamachi as Grin fortunately decided to include a LAN option and it works reasonably well.

So if you can convince some buddies to go through the small hoops to get the game up and running, I'd highly recommend it. It's a barebones port, but it runs really well on any semi-modern rig and it's an incredibly fun game unlike anything else.

And the single player's pretty good too.

Bad checkpoints and losing collectables progress put me off for the most part. One of my most disappointing games of this generation.

People will shit on this game and not read the OP.

Even though it doesn't deserve the shit because it's a great fucking game.

Is the PC player base active? I already have the game on 360 but I refused to pay for Live after my sub ran out, been heavily considering getting it on PC just for the sake of getting my swing on.

I loved bionic commando. I bought it on both 360 and ps3. And of course I bought rearmed. Don't think ill triple dip on the PC version tho. But for 2.50 there's alot of fun to have. The real fun comes from using the arm and mastering it.

I remember CTF being a big highlight for me. It was a lot of fun grabbing the flag and then taking crazy paths and swinging all over the place to avoid enemy fire. They really nailed the movement and swinging mechanic.

How's the PC ver. of the game? Willing to give it another chance, and the multiplayer as well.

It runs incredibly well(60+) even on my fairly modest 5 year old computer, but there aren't any graphical options to speak of. Changing your resolution is about the extent of any sort of graphical options.

Like I said, there's no PC player base to speak of since the login servers were shut off. So if ya wanna get your swing on through PC, you gotta round up a posse.

I remember seeing gameplay previews of the multiplayer and thinking it looked really fun. I mean, what's not to like about a bunch of spider-mans swinging around shooting rockets and machine guns at each other?

Sadly it looked like the game was going to bomb fast and it did (of course I was then part of the problem).

It came out the same day as some UFC game which sold a ton, so that was a nail in the coffin. Then later talk about the plot twist and some of the game's problems (like the contrived radiation barriers) ensured it never got good word-of-mouth, effectively burying it. The game was fun to me, but I have awkward tastes. I honestly believe GRIN would've knocked it out of the park if they were given another crack at it, and the end of the game clearly shows they intended to make a sequel.

I remember playing the multiplayer demo (beta?) of this right before it came out, it was SO MUCH FUN. I was technically part of the problem too, though, as I couldn't afford to pick it up at launch and then never bought it since it bombed pretty hard.

Bionic Commando 2009 is an underrated and beautiful hidden gem.

So this is a thread to say Bionic Commando 2009 was actually tons of fun and didn't deserve the hate it received? I'm in.

Can't comment on multiplayer as I never did play it, but swinging around in this game was a joy and I've little doubt that made for some great multi matches

So if I had $2.50 to spend on the last day of the sales, buy? I'd just go for it, but the one thing I remember about the game on 360 was how much I loved the multiplayer, and if the servers have been shut down...

Thank you for this thread op.

I'm always thought that BC09 was an underrated, but the multiplayer is something that definitely deserves more praise. I used to love playing it and it's one of my favorite multiplayer games out there. Too bad I could almost never find people to play with since I got it a while after release.

Color me one of the few that thinks this game had more emergent gameplay than most games this generation combined. The game is seriously good and honestly is one of my faves this gen. I've owned it on both consoles and played my old roommates pc version. Multiplayer was as good as it gets but there were not many people to play with even in 2010 and 2011.

I really love this game and makes me want to replay it again.

I love Bionic Commando. I put it in every once in a while for a bit of swinging and I always end up finish the whole game. Never got to try the multiplayer though since I refuse to pay for Xbox Live.

I assume no one plays the MP anymore right? I remember playing the demo of it and thought it was great fun.

Is it worth it for the singleplayer? I like the swinging mechanic but I have no idea whether Grin made good use of it.

The game was pretty challenging on the hardest difficulty if i remember correctly.

Played it on PC, very good game.

It's a good game. There's plenty of swinging to be had in colorful and varied environments. It's $2.50.

But did they make good use of of the swinging mechanic? It varies. Some levels are a joy to traverse, while others aren't as inductive to swinging as I think they should be. Sometimes fixtures suitable for swinging on are spaced just a bit too far apart, other times they're cluttered together which can lead to you getting snagged on them, and then there's the caves which at times are extremely vertical with very little to hold on to.

Multiplayer is so much fun, swinging around with the mouse feels amazing. It's sad that Capcom shut down the server.

If you're trying to play online on PC, I recommend using Evolve instead of Hamachi/Tunngle. It's a great program and super easy to set up.

Oh: Don't forget to buy Rearmed. It's $2.50 as well!

Oh man I was just thinking about this game right now. Sad to see the servers got shut down. I remember the multiplayer being a huge blast both in the beta and full game. Does anyone remember if the game had system link?

This game was great and I am definitely not biased when it comes to the franchise :P [Not sure why thread got necro-bumped but I'll sing praise whenever the opportunity presents itself]

I still remember playing the multiplayer demo for this with my friends for hours (I was the only one who actually bought the game haha). Even though the aiming wasn't great the swinging mechanics more than made up for it with how mobile combat became, just tons of fun.

Yeah, the single-player story was nonsensical (
but it did give us wife-arm memes
) and the lack of ability to replay individual levels sucked since they went the collectathon route, but it was nicely challenging on the hardest difficulty.

It's sort of like the 40k Space Marine game in my eyes. Yes, it's objectively an unpolished game and the story sucks, but it's got a lot of heart and unique multiplayer. It's the classic mid-tier game that died because we don't have variable pricing models.

I also love the STFU Easter Egg thing you get to skip a boss's monologue.

^that easter egg was great.

Also I just looked around and found out it has system link. Guess I'll have to grab a few copies for a rainy day when buddies are over.

Dude YES, it was a seriously underrated gem. While I thought the single player was fun, I played BC's multiplayer for hours on end. The swinging mechanics + multiplayer was just amazing and I honestly think it was my favorite multiplayer shooter just for the swinging mechanics alone. Once you were good with the controls, you felt like a Spider-Man god with a gun lol. The trill of nailing someone with a headshot while flying through the air was amazing....also the high speed chases! Also you are spot on about the zip line kicking mechanic, that shit was hilarious as especially if you both were already up high above everybody else. Watching as a spectator was hilarious too since you just see 2 colored dots in the sky bumping against each other like a DBZ fight. I think the most trilling part was finding someone or 2 just as good as yourself since it became a Spider Man battleground without the web but with guns! All in all, I truly miss it to death and was sad once my 360 broke for a few months and then the multiplayer scene died. I still wait till this day to find another shooter with grappling mechanics as great as Bionic Commando's. :(

The single player was absolutely atrocious and was a very frustrating experience. Which is a shame because BC's voice acting was great the multiplayer was as well. I feel like a sequel would've fixed everything. RIP Grin
