bit Generations official thread

Question for those of you playing Sound Voyager -

I am deaf in my right ear; thus stereo sound in headphones and often from speakers is largely lost on me and I often need to listen to things in mono that make prodigious use of stereo sound separation. Does Sound Voyager rely on stereo sound separation to play the game? Meaning, if I can't hear the right sound channel, am I screwed trying to play this game?

Yes :(

"Haha!"

so I was wondering...

How "limited release" are these games. I'd love to buy 2 or 3 of them, but right now... that's not good for my cash flow. (saving for wii, paying credit card, going on holidays soon).

My question is: will there be bit generations copies in a couple of months?

Good question. I want an answer too.

According to Dylan Cuthbert (creator of Digidrive) over at Tokyopia (see the digidrive instructions in this thread for a link), Nintendo is releasing X copies per month. I guess the experiment is to see how long they'll keep selling or something.

More impressions:
After one of the most brutally steep learning curves I've encountered in years, Digidrive "clicked." I love it now. My high score in Single is 2300m, and I screwed up badly to end it there. I'm thinking that 10km is possible. I also beat the computer in Hard mode, unlocking Expert vs. mode, which is really frickin' hard and really addictive. My favorite skin at the moment is the USA one.

Soundvoyager... not so much. I only have Sound Cock (dear lord) 2 & 3 and their associated soundcatchers to beat. It's a very hypnotic game with nice music, but the gameplay is as shallow as can be.

The way it should have worked is that certain sounds would have to slot into certain spots in the stereo picture. It's a shame.

I haven't gotten Dotstream or Orbital yet, but I should within the next few days. If either is as good as Digidrive, though, I'll be really happy with the series.

Based on IGN's impressions, Coloris sounds more interesting than I gave it credit for. Anyone looking to get rid of their copy for $20 shipped?

I got the rest of the bitGenerations games today.

Here are some pictures of the complete set:

Digidrive is my favorite of the bunch.

Anyone who dosen't ackwnoledge Coloris existance (e.g. I'm buying DotStream + SoundVoyager + *******) need to be send in hell NOW!!!

Could someone who has Coloris explain it in more depth? The IGN impressions were the first I've read that gave me any idea what was going on, but I still don't get how it plays.

I just got my copy yesterday, so this is a bit rough & ready:

The game presents you with a grid of different coloured spots, with the different shades usually being on a gradation between two particular colours. For example, you might have blue & yellow as your main colours which would give you a grid of shades between those two colours - greens, light blues etc.

The objective is to change the colour of each dot to create chains of same-coloured dots. These chains are mostly straight lines, though you can - with a little care or luck - create T- or L-shaped chains. Each chain adds a small amount to a colour bar across the top of the screen & when this fills you've cleared the level. It appears that longer, more complex chains or chain combos make the bar fill faster, but I'm not sure exactly how the scoring system works.

The tricky part is changing the colour of the dots. The cursor you use to select a dot and change its colour is one of the two main colours on that particular grid. When you click on a dot it shifts one shade in the direction of the colour of the cursor - so if you have a yellow dot and you click on it when the cursor is red, it will shift to become a more orange tone. Each time you click, the colour of the cursor changes randomly so you can't always keep cycling through colours on one dot, you'll have to bounce from place to place on the grid trying to find a shade that needs shifted in the direction of your cursor colour.

How limited edition are these exactly? I may be going to Japan in late September. Would these games still be on the shelves or would they all be snatched up by then?

I'm so glad to return to this thread and see Digidrive love. I actually enjoyed it even when I didn't understand it--figuring it out was fun. But when I went from 803m as my high score to 4600m in my next game....MAN, that was AWESOME. I'm sort of sad that I find most of the skins really hard to bear--I was hoping for them to be less of just a pallete swap, and certain color combos make the game really freaking hard. But it's super deep, and that's before you even touch the Vs. (cpu or player)...which adds another layer!

I'm sad to report that I think Soundvoyager is pretty lame--Baron, you're not missing that much IMO. And this is coming from an "audiophile"...liking sound and music is not enough to hook me in to what is clearly the most lackluster of all 7 of these games. Edit: that's cool to see that some people were pretty into it...see my edit note below...

Also, I wish they had done more with Dialhex--I actually like it's play mechanic more than Coloris', but Coloris has way more in terms of levels and different things to do. Watching the credits when you beat Dialhex really made me wish they had done cool stuff with white and black tiles...etc. etc. Hope to see it return someday (Virtual Console update please?)...

More on all these later. Great little bunch of games as a whole.

Edit: after reading through some of the posts I missed earlier, what I like to see is that everyone seems to like different cross sections of these games. I think that's great. It's only too bad that we couldn't have gotten these as 1 massive collection...although I do think that some of them are definitely worth 20 bucks on their own.

Finished Soundvoyager.
Shuffle mode is cool, but why does it always start with Voyage?!
My position is still the same: half the game (the soundcatchers) is almost great (but to have all the final songs be mono is silly and disappointing); the other half is at best kind of fun and at worst just sort of frustrating. I feel no need or desire to improve my scores, you know?

Up to 4.3km in Digidrive. Still can't do shit against the Expert mode CPU. The Vs. mode is fantastic, though, and I really hope we see an online version on DS or Virtual Console. The lack of usable skins is disappointing -- probably only 5% are actually usable (and fewer are any good to look at).

Posting ripped music isn't really allowed by the TOS, is it?

I'd be happy to record some fair-use clips of Soundvoyager if anyone is interested.

I thought it was an issue only if it was for sale. I know I've seen rips of stuff posted here, like F-Zero GX and Ridge Racers...

If I'm wrong feel free to delete my posts or something.

"Mommy, tell me how to play this"
(Um... Mommy?)

There are chickens running around a farmyard. You have to run at and catch the chickens. Locate the chickens by their position in the stereo picture (the fake 3D doesn't work well). Move forward by pressing A.

Orbital is my GOTY so far. SO ADDICTIVE. And deep, and with only two buttons!!! I have been telling everyone to get on this shit. And I was stoked to find out my friends at Skip made it!! Right on!!!

I highly recommend this game, at 20 bucks you really can't go wrong, my game boy micro has been in my pocket CONSTANTLY, just be sure to play with headphones, the music is really good and really adds to the mood.

no kidding.

this is a great initiative.
i really want to see more bit-generation titles in the future. on Wii, VC or DS.
i want to see more people do similar things.

less is more.
small is beautyful.
im having more fun with those simple, stylish cool 20$ games than i had with 80$ on 360.

i can already tell you that this little idea is making waves.
some of the higher-ups designers at work have asked me to lend them the series for research.

small teams, small budget, big ideas. this is personally what i want to do.
i have a hard time with the idea of working on the same big game with the same big team for a year, 2 years, maybe even 3 years! as a designer i would much much rather work with a super small team of passionate and dedicated individual and crank out an entire series of game like bit-g in the time it takes a giant team to make ONE crummy next-gen offering.

and seign nintendo do this, with some success might convince other studios to go small.
we have all these inexpensive platforms to develop on. lets make funky little gems on XBLA, DS, VC, whatever.

seriously..the fact that this "game label" exists makes me happy.
i really want this distributed in the US just so that more people can play and that the concept of cheap but awesomely creative games catches on.

phil_fish: hear hear. I for one am mainly interested in 360 for XBLA, and am really curious to see what Nintendo does with the VC. I think this definitely represents the next big movement in the industry.

P.S. I know this is the bit generations thread, but people who are interested in creative ways of using music in games need to go check out Rhythm Tengoku for GBA. Now.

i KNOW.

im VERY MUCH interested in music in games. musical gameplay that is.
tengoku is on my list for sure. but i just got a macbook, and i also succumbed and got dead rising when i shouldnt have.

the whole bit-g series set me back a few also.

but yeah...must buy for sure.

funny how GBA is home to so much awesome inovation these days.

My copies of Dotstream and Coloris just arrived today. I really like Dotstream's music - it screams for a soundtrack. Maybe I'll try and record the music from the game.

And thanks to the poster above for the details on Coloris - it's hard to figure out, but once you know what you're doing, it's a lot of fun, and challenging.

Nobody has really noted just how small the packaging for these games is - I was taken aback by the tiny boxes! They are barely 3 inches square. Very cool. I played a bit of both on my Game Boy Player using a Wavebird, and it translated pretty well to a larger screen. However, the sparse neon graphics came across with much more impact on my Game Boy Micro screen. Nice!

Finally got to Boundish today. Despite knowing that it was the blacksheep off the bunch, I thought i'd be into it as I love pong. Little did I know that 4 of the 5 games don't ever increase in difficulty (to my knowledge anyway) and that there are seemingly no goals. On the positive side, the Juggling game is great and pretty addictive. That one actually evolves as it goes on. The music is also very nice as well as the general style. Overall, I played the game for 4 hours total and i'm already ready to give the score. Oddly enough I feel like I should give it a better score because it does nothing wrong, but honestly this game is no better (aside from the music) than the bonus games that come with WarioWare and WarioWare: Twisted.

Boundish (considering price + game itself, not packaging): 3/10

I'm ready to give a score for Coloris, too. Not much has changed from my impressions. I just want to reiterate that the replay value in this game is much higher than your typical full priced puzzle game. A lot of creativity was put into the advanced levels and it provided a hefty challenge to get through all the boards. The only negative I see is that in some of the later advanced levels where you can't see the board plus you have to worry about primary colors often result in pissed off moments where you need to fix one square but others are black out in the meantime. Then again, without levels like these, the game would lack challenge.

Coloris (considering price + game itself, not packaging): 8/10

Moving on to Digidrive tonight....

Finally cleared 10km in Digidrive (with a 10X attack to boot)! It's really an exhilarating feeling when you get the piles swapping repeatedly and the attack power builds and builds.

On the other hand, it's not a game you can play indefinitely. If you screw up at any point, you're done -- there's no way to rally from a mistake. This is a bit of a problem.

The 2P mode is much better from that standpoint. Playing the CPU in expert mode has produced some harrowing moments before the momentum shifted and I started winning. (It usually shifts back :P) I love games that produce that feeling of momentum shifting.

Expert Vs. is hard, though. I've won 1 round in... 25 attempts? I think the Expert CPU will remain challenging for quite a while.

(Oh, a warning to those starting: You *need* to be playing in Single Player Expert mode to have a shot at the really long distances. Also, I had a lot of fun figuring out the rules and strategies mostly by myself. YMMV.)

Did you ever hit the button that takes you to the setup for each of the minigames? There's a difficulty select, and I'll be damned if you don't think it's hard when you pump it up to 3. Since the game saves all the time, I can't help but think that there's something to be had from beating them all on the highest difficulty.

At any rate, my two cents is that I'm tired of Boundish being called the black sheep of the bunch. By nature of it being Pong-ish, of course the play against the CPU isn't going to be as fun or riveting as versus another human, but I found it fairly interesting nonetheless. There's many nuances to each variation that seem to get glossed over, seemingly just because this is the easiest bit-generations game to pigeonhole as a clone of some other game. To me, Soundvoyager outpaces Boundish as the runt of the litter by far. But to each his own.

Never went into setup actually (I automatically assumed "control setup" :-( ). Maybe the game will have more replay value than I thought. However, i'm not calling this a simple pong clone. The games are varied, but it seems like you can only have so much fun with each without a second player. My score probably would have went up if I knew about the setup and if I had a second player (don't have a micro) to go against. I'll revise it when I get back to the game. I just started Digidrive and i'm too addicted to go back for now.

I'd love to know, too. Maybe winning all the games on level 3 and hitting a certain score on Juggle? I'm going to have to go back and play this now... I wrote it off too soon.

Hehe yeah, Digidrive kicks ass. I totally agree that the Boundish games are only so much fun without a second player. It gets better with the higher difficulty, but still, the play value is limited there. So yeah, I wouldn't say as low as 3/10, but still, it's far from the best of the bunch. I do want to unlock that 6th game though, looks intriguing.

Does anybody know anything about unlocking potential in Dialhex? It saves even when you lose at Solo, which is odd. I've beaten Solo twice and gotten a high score of 238 in Endless, but nothing has opened yet.

I think it saves Solo to unlock Endless. You can't actually click on Endless on the title screen the first time you play.

so, um, did anyone notice that if you get a 4x black autobahn in digidrive immediately after you start the game, the computer just keeps throwing black pieces at you until you've essentially got four max'd out lanes? the rest of the game is just a matter of keeping them multiplying for as long as possible. i just got it like four hours ago and have a ~6.5k high score. i'm assuming this is a lot (?), since it unlocked all the 'special' skins for passing 5k.

Hi all, been browsing here for a while, first time posting. :)

I recieved my copy of Dotstream and Orbital from Yes Asia (thanks to the suggestions on this board). Having some fun with both, Dotstream is making me come back for more and more trying to unlock the next cup. Enjoying Orbital aswell especially when I grow huge.

After reading impressions I got to get Digidrive and Coloris (the others just don't interest me). I wonder if I'll still be able to buy them in a few weeks time (if there's enough copies of the games published)?

The way Autobahn mode works is that you only get pieces that you can use, so that the mode isn't forced to end when you get another.

You HAVE to build up four maxed out lanes and then clone them in order to really get anywhere. You can pile up up to ten full circles on top of one another. If you have three full circles, for instance, flipping one of them into the others creates two x2 stacks. Build up another stack and flip one of the x2 stacks, and you'll have a x4 stack and a x3 stack. Etc. When you get ten piled up, it shows up as ?x when you detonate it. If you run out of circle stacks, you're pretty much dead, as it's almost impossible to build them up again from nothing once you've got all three shapes in play.

I have mixed feelings about this part of the design; it reduces the diversity of single player mode considerably, but it's an exhilating feeling to detonate two ?x piles in a row.

Vs. mode doesn't suffer from this, and it's pure awesome.

You've got a ways to go (and quite a few unlockables, too). My high score is 21km, and the highest score I've seen is *65*km.

I have no idea how. I've beaten all the games on level 3 now and I thought i'd have a high enough score in Juggling. I can't find a code either to unlock it. Is the video from the final game or is it from a WIP version?
