Bizarre redesigns of comic book characters

I love Pokken!
Inspired by this thread on gaming side, which was the most bizarre redesigns in comic book history?
Two come to my mind:

The first one was when the Punisher became Frankencastle

And the other was the 'new' Lobo from DC's New 52

What about you Comic-GAF, which other bizarre choices in chatacter redesigns can you remember?

I actually really like the New 52 Lobo design, very friendly and approachable. Old Lobo is just a boring, brutish thug. A real product of the 90's and someone who should be sent to prison.
New Lobo probably helps the community but Old Lobo probably just does drugs and stuff, what kind of lesson does that send children?

New Lobo is hot so I obviously approve, but yeah, I can see how fans of the original character might scratch their heads.

I've always thought Superman Blue looked really 90s.

I still hate that Nu Lobo design. Old Lobo looks like he knows how to have a good time whereas the other one looks as if he might cry if someone was to muss his perfect hair.

Lobo redesign is terrible because somehow DC thought turning damn Lobo into serious character was a good idea. This guy is supposed to be used in comedy and parodies. Making serious stories with him makes even less sense than trying to do so with Deadpool.

Anyway, my contribution to this thread if Azrael.
From badass to I don't know wtf that was

In a more serious attempt at bizarre redesigns, there's a few I can name.

Some time during the 80s, Marvel decided to re-design Dr. Strange from this:
to this:

He's wearing some face mask. Don't ask me why, it was their idea.

Also one of the most popular characters of Marvel's X-Men actually had an entirely different body. So we went from Betsy Braddock, a British gal with mutant powers...

To Betsy Braddock, the Asian assassin with skimpy clothing.

There's also various weird "forms" that some characters have taken. Capwolf for instance:

The first one was when the Punisher became Frankencastle
Frankencastle is not so much a redesign than a temporary change for the character during a story arc. Some people raged about it but it actually made sense to push the character to the limit of what could happen to him in a world of super-heroes. I thought it was cool because Punisher is more often than not written as if in a world separated from the regular Marvel universe.

Here, Frank Castle tries to mess way above his league, gets cut to pieces in result but the Marvel universe being the crazy place it is his remains are taken by a group of monsters living in NY sewers, they sew him back up, revive him and ask for his help in returns. He looks like Frankenstein's monster. Rick Remender short run on the character was actually pretty fun and respectful of the character.

Old harely really creeped me out, I'd take any of the other ones over her.

Old lobo fits his personality, new lobo looks cool, but I dunno about his personality.

I nominate mecha Batman and iron man suit Spider Man.

Honorable mention to Azrael Batman and Spiderman 2099 ( character is awesome but wtf web cape)

New Lobo looks better. Old Lobo is everything wrong with comics in the 90s.

But being a parody of everything dark and gritty from the 90s is kinda the idea of the char !

I died a little inside when I first saw this shite. I tried the comics but it's just a smart ass emo kid saying "Sorry, not sorry" over and over again. I really hope the REAL Lobo comes back and kicks his ass repeatedly.

Well, Frankencastle makes sense within his context.

It was also a surprisingly fun and lighthearted take on the character after an incredibly grissly "thing"
(namely Frank being chopped into pieces by Marvel's biggest shitheel)
.

Lobo looks awful. Some of these are fine--I like Harley (though I wish her classic design was still around in some way) and man, Superman Blue is classic 90's goodness.

There have been tons of serious stories with deadpool.

Until Daniel Way.

Not Marvel or DC, but Archie's Sonic comic.

Prior to the recent half-reboot of the universe, Sonic had a pet dog:

Ultimately this character was a reminant of the old 1990's Sonic cartoon. It's kind of a wierd Goofy / Pluto thing.

Anyway, with the reboot, which made the comic more in line with the games, but still retained a lot of the characters from the original 1990's TV show, one of the requirements was no more "pet" creatures outside of Animal Friends and Chao from the games.

So in turn, instead of getting rid of the character, we got:

Had to happen, but it's a pretty bizarre and massive reboot of the character.

Harley Quinn

From this:

actually appreciate both. in the way that I appreciate all eras of comics. Original Harley was awesome for her time, but to integrate the character into modern comics change and loss of camp isn't bad IMHO.

The new Batman (apparently) is kind of messing with me though.. Just started on it. (apparently new superman also)

Does live action versions of comic book characters count ?

Because there is like an infinity stash of characters to show

I knew someone was gonna post Marko's stuff hahaha. That shit launched his Marvel career like crazy. I remember so much vitriol and awe.
