Just hire them to make HL3 at this point.

Think I'm beginning to like this idea more and more...

The screenshot looks alright. Having played the first part of Black Mesa, I have full confidence that they'll pull it off.

What kind of quirks has HL1 that ruins the experience today? I still think it plays great, it's fast and nervous, the AI is cool, and the level design and progression is still the best thing about it. And it supports modern resolution so it looks fine. The only really outdated thing in my mind is the horribly compressed voices but it's no big deal.

Nothing. This is a pc game - it used the same tools and plays the same as games today. Its a better game than 99% of everything that came after it to this day. The AI is fenomenal, the weapons have a punch and kick you dont get in todays controller made shooters. The movement, the speed, the level design are all how a proper computer FPS was supposed to be. Its a timeless game in the truest sense

I can't look at it with fresh eyes because I played it when it came out, but I've seen enough "I just played HL1 / HL2 for the first time and whats the big deal?" type comments that I can appreciate someone who has played a lot of games that followed that formula can't appreciate it because they've played more refined iterations of that formula first, and it is recognisably close enough to modern FPS standards that that is what it is held to.

Something like Quake plays so differently to modern FPSes that someone trying it for the first time doesn't have any preconceptions like that, because it plays so differently to modern titles

HL1 looks old as shit but the gameplay is still solid as hell.

I wholeheartedly recommend anyone give it a spin.

I hope they adjust some of the late game balance in Black Mesa

It's an amazing game, but the parts right before Xen don't seem very well balanced. The whole war between the aliens and grunts (and you) part, I mean. The three times I've gotten to that point, I got stuck in a room somewhere with no ammo, no health, and no way to escape other than to console log myself some ammo and health.

I'm guessing Xen was ready to release back in December, but after the devs saw this thread they realized they had to make it more alien so they had to redo it. The new pic from instagram supports this.

I gotta admit, black mesa has really been an interesting ride

Originally, it was "we will release this free mod when we are ready"

To "here's this free mod, still don't want money, but we weren't able to finish Xen, that will happen later"

To "hey we are going on early access for $20, no longer a free mod, but the money will help us finish Xen"

To "yeah xen, a 1-2 hour part of the game, still isn't finished several years later." If you paid early access you haven't gotten anything yet.

Now, to be fair, black mesa is incredibly well done, especially when it was free. I do have a problem with them going the "let's make money off of this" attitude that hasn't delivered it's promise yet.
