Black Ops 3: Thoughts and impressions

Or he's shooting from mid/long range where there IS a bullet-damage drop-off. Close-range CoD's typical engagements are going to be quick to kill.

As for me:

User controlled killstreaks = Yeah, no.

Or more expanded: Call of Duty 4 continues to be (despite Frag x 3 and Martyrdom) the best of the series. Less bullshit deaths, less bullshit being thrown at you. Just... less bullshit to deal with. User controlled killstreaks that allow people to just hide in a corner and then rain death down on spawn points once they know where they (terrible) spawns on the maps are is awful. CoD4 got it right in that the airstrike is the ONLY thing you can control and even then it's a UNCONTROLLED strafe-run. You call in the general direction and that's it. The helicopter was AI controlled, the UAV was uncontrolled. None of this camping spawns.
Getting kills from AI is stupid too though if you think about it.

I don't care for it. COD mp has never really been my thing. Small maps with poor respawns and a very quick TTK that doesn't fit very well with the small maps and poor spawns. I also didn't care for the flinch or whatever it's called when getting shot. It's nice and clean visually, though, and the performance (PS4) during my playtime was solid.

OP I agree completely with you, last COD I liked was Blops 2. Ghosts and AW were just horrible, pisses me off that I wasted so much money on them. All of the maps were way too open and they just simply sucked in those games and TTK was completely fucked, fucking hell I didn't really like anything about those games.

Blops 3 ain't perfect either but it's definitely a welcome return to form and I'm definitely excited to get a new MP game which I can sink so many hours in to. Been playing the TLOU MP almost exclusively this year and while that is fantastic too it's starting to be enough for me since I started playing it on PS3 already.

Treyarch definitely has the best scorestreak, perk system and map design compared to all the other devs games. They get it just right, love the new specialist system too.
Completely agree with it all

I feel ashamed for the money I wasted on ghosts and AW

But my money is ready for BO3, the beta alone was more fun than those two games

Personally I didn't care for it, the movement didn't suit me. Furthermore it just wasn't fun, the specialists detract from the game having a team comprised of 4 identical characters or more at times looks shitty (I know they have customisation on full release but still).

The futuristic settings in the last few cod titles is also something I don't care for, I would rather the modern warfare era, even WW2 at this stage.

All the beta made me want to do is play Titanfall which I have been doing but will no doubt get bored of it again due to its lack of variety.

All in all I won't be picking it up anytime soon unless I see it very cheap and only for single player as I love the blops story so far.

Long rambling write up incoming.

I wasn't that impressed with the multiplayer after playing the PS4 beta. I'd actually go as far to say that I'm not looking forward to the game that much now but I'm still gonna go ahead and pick it up day one since I have the fridge edition pre-ordered. lol. Plus I'm looking forward to trying out zombies too.

For a little background and for comparison's sake, my favorite CoD MP was Black Ops 1. I liked the maps, I liked how you had to earn killstreaks by getting gun kills, I liked various guns in the game. The lag/netcode sucked there but overall, it was a lot of fun for me and I was willing to look past it because the game felt right. Sure, it had areas where it could improve upon like fixing Ghost and whatnot but it was still great. It also had two of the best killstreaks - the chopper gunner and attack dogs. My other favorites in the series were MW and MW2. Ghosts and AW were a few of my least favorite and least played CoD titles so I'm kind of yearning for some great CoD MP so I'd really like BO3 to nail it. I also didn't really care for Black Ops 2 too much. I thought it was merely okay.

Which is probably why I don't really care for Black Ops 3. It has the feel of BO2 with specialist stuff and enhanced movement. But everyone who likes/loved Black Ops 2 seems to like/love this game as well. The pace of the game just feels like it's almost too much half the time. Like others have said "too much bullshit" going on. It's like every year, they keep trying to add more and more to the game until the MP just becomes madness. That's what it feels like when I play CoD MP now. Killstreaks flying constantly, specialist abilities, bad spawns, fast movement, low TTK, etc. It's just a little too much for it to be enjoyable for me.

Also, the specialists were a major concern for me going into the beta. I thought they would take away from the fun more than they would add to it and unfortunately, playing the beta only confirmed that belief. I don't like specialist abilities in Destiny either. They're just a cheap way to get no skill kills. We don't need all of these instant kill weapons, the TTK is low enough as it is. I would be more okay with it if you only got an ability to use out of it instead of the guns but most people choose the weapons, in my experience. I know you can say "well, you get them too. Everyone does" but I don't even want them. It's just not that fun for me. Hell, the tempest can kill you even when it doesn't hit you. If a teammate gets hit close to you, you're dead too if it chains. Talk about frustrating. Like there already wasn't enough ways to die in the game. lol

None of them four maps I played made me say "holy shit, this is a great/fun map." They were just okay or pretty good. Great maps help to make a great MP experience. I know that's just my opinion, though. Other people may love the maps and that's cool. Also, another minor gripe is the lack of customization. The voices are amusing for each character (for now) but everyone having the same look is very, very boring. Come on, it's 2015. We shouldn't be dealing with that still.

What I did like about the MP was... the gun diversity/balance seems pretty good. I like how you can add a bunch of attachments to a weapon in the game if that's how you want to play. Makes it feel like you can make any gun into a good gun but it may lead to some OP combinations. At least they're active about balancing things though so I'll give them that too. The movement abilities like the wall running and jumping aren't OP like I was initially worried they might be. And the swimming actually feels good and works well on the maps so kudos to them for nailing that part of it. Some of the killstreaks are pretty cool like the RAPS but I didn't see any that made me feel awesome when getting it like the chopper gunner and dogs did. Weapon paint jobs seems like a neat and welcome addition but I didn't toy with it much.

Oh, one more gripe for me that I just remembered. The black hat just seems a little too good. It almost feels pointless to run UAVs when you hear "Your UAV has been hacked" every two seconds. And they can steal your killstreaks too pretty easily. They need to tone that down some too. But I'll have to wait for the official release to see how I feel about everything for sure. I just don't expect it to change too much from the beta.

Based on the beta, I feel this game is only suited for one kind of play, rushers. In the previous games to could rush or hang back and take a slow approach.

In this game the maps are too small and frequent map spawn switch makes it pretty impossible to play any other way than rush with a smg.

If you look online, you'll notice that most people actually play with AR and do amazingly well, Alia comes to mind. I prefer smgs myself, but it is no way the only way to play. Driftor even has game play with a LMG and doing good

If anything I'm glad smgs are actually viable in this game

That's not true at all. I did plenty of slow, careful play, and it was really effective, even in rounds of TDM with people constantly flipping spawns. Just gotta keep an eye on that minimap.

All the weapons I tried (everything but the other pistols) also felt completely viable. I think the game is currently biased towards higher ROF weapons thanks to the extreme flinch, but everything is usable. I even saw people doing well just running around with a pistol. Personally, my go-to gun was the Man o War, followed closely by the ARK 7.

Dont like the MP at all. Poor map design and the new abilities are out of place. COD needs to go back to WW2.

Ill buy it for the zombies and thats it. Hopefully Infinity Ward makes a WW2 COD for next year.

The maps were bad (But it doesnt seem like we get good mp maps this year because somehow they all look boring. In Battlefront, Rainbow Six and CoD)

The netcode was sometimes unacceptable.

But besides these 2 points its the best CoD so far.

not every COD had unacceptable netcode so I find it difficult to believe that this is the best COD.

The mixed reactions in this thread are more than enough for me to instantly avoid this game, as I was fooled last time by the AW "best cod ever" threads where I mistakenly ignored the vocal minority who pointed out very serious issues that became a huge reality within one hour of playing the game.

Netcode issues? Matchmaking issues? Aim assist? Hit Detection issues? Instant no buy

Not to piss off the COD fans but its the same god damn game again

I really dont understand it

There is COD franchise hasnt innovated since MW1, that was the last time, since then its been in the same game recycled

Yeah man, definetly man, that was the last time. I can't tell the difference. I've been playing the same game for years, damn they got me.

I really don't understand posts like yours either

+ better than AW or Ghosts
+ enjoy the toned down movements from AW
+ Gunplay was solid
+ Maps fairly well designed
+ Sound design
+ Guns felt balanced

- Maps too small, particularly combine
- Wall running feels tacked on..too "me too." Few people use it, i never felt like i benefitted from it, or that i was killed by someone because of it.
- lack of character customization after Ghosts and AW is a big step backwards
- only having 9 characters to choose from, and them being the same on both teams is poorly designed
- don't like the characters being specifically tied to the specialist abilities...if the character choices are going to be so limited..let me pick the one i want and then pick my specialist ability
- not a particular fan of the specialist abilities. They don't fit CoD to me...but i really think BO3 seems to be going for some "arena, deathmatch simulation TV show" type vibe instead of actual combat (which i also don't like) so it fits in that sense.
- Spawns can be BAD...but i think its more of a product of map design, movement speed etc then the actual spawn logic...for example: one particular instance stands out on Combine i spawned by the "truck" at the back of the map..looked into the building to the left and the other team just kept coming out towards me...so i stood there, racking up kills...after about 30 seconds when nobody else came through the doorway i started to move forward...after getting maybe 10 steps from the truck i heard something behind me...spun around to watch 4 members of the enemy team spawn within 20 or so steps of me...needless to say i got mowed down lol

I'm sure ill think of more +'s and -'s and add to this

i just don't understand this...not at all...

im 50/50 on the game.

very fun to play but felt very clunky.
died more times trying to wallrun then i actually did end up wallrunning

I disagree, you definitely need skill, if you go on a streak it's because you know what you are doing, not random luck

I don't really believe so. I mean if you have some skill in wallrunning to flank... but even then you better hope the enemy doesn't have a special ability. I mean now not only do I have to worry about getting killed by some missile from across the map.. now I have to worry about people teleporting and crap. I mean come on.

Yeah wall running is a neat add on.. not really needed but it's cool. It just seems like their new experience for the game is.. more ways for easy kills. Killstreaks are one thing but they are going too far with it.

the reason a lot of people don't like the newer games is because they aren't like COD4...

we dont want innovation, whats so hard to understand?

Mw2 was great because it was pretty much cod 4 x 100. Then they started changing shit,

not a fan could not get into it whatsoever, granted COD has been nothing but the same thing over and over to me. This is a series that needs to take a break and not be the Madden of FPS games. It all just feels old and tired to me

After the beta, I'm contemplating buying BO2(if it becomes backward compatible) instead of BO3. I never owned BO2, I only borrowed it and played it for a month. BO2 was actually faster and more fun for me than this beta. You had Lightweight to match SMG class speed when playing with assault rifles, Toughness to reduce annoying flinch, Stock attachment for fast movement during ADS. They've removed Lightweight and Toughness, nerfed Stock. And I'm having less fun because of that. I know they'll reduce the flinch because everyone's whining about it, but they won't reintroduce Lightweght or buff Stock.

The game is actually a piece of shit on PC. Runs like shit, plays like shit, no thought on balancing weapons etc. And yes I know its a "beta" but these days beta=demo. The fact that every release Treyarch has put out on PC has been garbage gives me no hope.

the reason a lot of people don't like the newer games is because they aren't like COD4...

Which is true. COD4 had so much more going for it and was the longest lasting COD.

For me the game ran better on the xbone than the ps4...had way too many laggy lobbies on psn not sure if it was the beta or psn but something needs to be fixed as xbl ran perfect

Gun wise...everyone was using the razor so im guessing that will be the first nerf as it has the range of an assualt rifle with no recoil and a high fire rate...the sheiva is a shitty substitute for a fal/mk12 fires way too slow even with rapid fire..the rest of the guns are pretty average...they need to buff the assualt rifles in general.

The maps i thought are pretty good...quite a few head glitching spots but they are easy to avoid

Perks seem to be really underwhelming....the game really needs toughness back

The scorestreaks are ok..nothing special

My wishlist
Buff the assualt rifles
Fix the perks...give us a toughness type perk
Fix the psn issues

Overall im happy..certainly the best cod in thr last 2 years

Really don't like the preset MP characters and how they keep making the CoD UI and profession look more complex. Also felt a lot like TF, noticed a lot of players not making use of the traversal mechanics. I liked it and dare I say it felt more fluid than TF itself.

Probably will buy it for SP on disc and sell it back in 2 days like I did with AW. CoD feels like it's reached its height with MW2 and has been declining ever since.

I tried some MP, felt incredibly slow and clunky. Really didn't like it.
The double jump feels really bad, because you tend to run into invisible walls (seriously)? Hated how the game had mouse smoothing and acceleration by default, too.

It's crazy how you can have so much fun with a game, and yet find out that many people disliked it. From my group of friends, everyone really enjoyed it. I really do think this is the cod we needed, the cod we deserved

First cod im going to pass on since mw2. With uncharted collection in october, metal gear today, fall out 4 in November, to many better games being released. Also am dying to try out siege. I think that will be my multiplayer fix this winter. Felt clunky to me. Was very bored after about 10 minutes. Shit just isnt for me anymore.

I honestly had a ton of fun. Everything about the movement is really well done and I thought like how the water gunfights bring a new dynamic. I was worried about the visuals but it all seems very crisp and clear. The game nails that great Treyarch feel of tight aiming and satisfying gunplay. Everything in their games just comes together to make for a great experience with tense Objective games and I'm so thankful they're bringing back Demolition. I didn't play too far into the weekend though because with no challenges and only 4 maps I was getting burnt out pretty quickly.

And that's what scares me. The symmetrical, 3-lane, small-to-medium map design makes everything so predictable, to the point where every map is just the same shootouts over and over again. Black Ops II is one of my favorite MP games of all time but it gets to the point where I have to move on because it becomes too repetitive. I really don't play CoD for a fair and balanced competitive experience. I have Counter-Strike for that. Call me crazy but I actually played a ton of Ghosts after the beta because I miss the methodical gameplay on open warzones and unpredictable encounters, while still offering smaller, more fast paced maps to change it up. I'm also disappointed Treyarch is recycling the same unlock system and Scorestreaks. I'm gonna be there Day 1 but I'm worried I'll get burnt out faster than I did on BlOps2

That's always been a bad argument IMO. Black Ops and BOII were the best realization of CoD multiplayer. MW3 and Ghosts were as generic as CoD has ever been however, and love it or hate it, AW at least did something different.

BO3 is far different than any CoD yet. That may not be a good thing honestly, but calling it "the same game again" seems inaccurate to the max.

Beta was fun even though I sucked. Could not try everything but what I played I enjoyed. My first CoD on PS4 so I thought the graphics were great. And yeah the TTK is really low, kind of frustrating.

Unfortunately it made me think about my posture about MP games as only a rare commodity. With CSGO as my solid go to game I will check how the coming MP games do and see from there.

I felt like I played enough of the beta to get my CoD fill for the year. I went through the full range of emotions in the 4 days I played it and went from 'Woah this is great I'm on board' to 'You know what, I think I'm good', and when November rolls around I can politely decline to get on the hype train.

I had my fun, but I feel like the time I want to spend playing Call of Duty gets shorter and shorter each year.

Ghosts was pretty shitty and AW got shitty once everyone started to always just hop around.

The Beta made me go from not really interested to maybe getting it at launch even though Battlefront ist coming out two weeks later. If no, I'll definitely get it down the line, IF the servers hold up. Beta was only ok in that regard.

Thoughts: PASS

Impressions: PASS

Reason: Ghosts and Advanced Warfare played better than this. Powers are hilarious. This isn't destiny. Gravity spikes? hmmm... okay. lol

It's just not my cup of tea. As noted, i know this is very enjoyable by others and i hope you have a great holiday with this game. Cheers.

They need to balance the special and make it so you can probably only get it once or twice per game.

I will be buying it physically to sell later.

I'm going to admit I played the beta with 0 intention of buying the game and expecting to not enjoy it.

With that said, reasons I didn't like the beta:

- I hate the specialists. Everyone gets there own little super weapon or super power no matter if you're playing great or playing like shit.

- The specialists weapons aren't really well thought out. Do you want a 1 hit kill charge electric shot thing, a 1 hit kill bow, a 1 hit kill magnum, or a 1 hit kill minigun? Why wouldn't you use a automatic weapon that kills people in 1 hit over weapons you have to charge/ actually aim properly?

- The lag was bad, and I'm not just talking about the lag because it was the beta where you were skipping around and couldn't play at all. When the game was playable, it was the same lag that's been in every CoD for idk how long. You shoot someone first, they kill you, you watch the kill cam and it shows you didn't shoot them once. Always been the most aggravating thing for me in CoD games.

- The maps are bad. There's no flow to anything, the second you spawn on certain maps you can literally double jump/wall run your way to the center of the map in like 4-5 seconds, in some cases you can even make it to the Enemy spawn. Everything is total chaos which is good to an extent, but you die before you can even react to someone shooting you from the 10 different places you can be shot from at any point. It's an arena twitch shooter, which is stupid as fuck.

- The spawns are terrible. You spawn in front of ppl who kill you constantly. There were times where I actually spawned with the enemy team, then I died and it flipped me back to the correct spawn. Spawning has always been iffy in CoD but this one was extra bad.

- Incredibly easy to spawn trap/get trapped. Mainly has to do with the spawning problem, if that gets fixed this will.

Only positive thing I'll say is I liked the guns/gunplay. Even though there are a few guns that are clearly broken and I question what they were thinking.

terrible. it does everything half assed and gimmicky. i haven't liked it since seeing the first clips of play and i didn't like it after playing it.

Level 49 after 25 hours on PC and level 22 on PS4:

A million miles ahead of Advanced Warfare which was gash, unlike AW the movement in Black Ops III doesn't massively hurt the gameplay, I'd still prefer boots on ground gunplay but I can live with the thruster, although thrust jumping should throw off your aim a bit to deter people from doing it mid gunfight.

One thing they've done so right, which most CoDs struggle with is weapon balance, I had 5 different guns and swapped between them often with no difference in ratio. It's unlikely you'll ever see the majority of a lobby using the same weapon outside of the first few days.

The Specialists are fun, but the weapons are too strong on PC, especially the Annihilator, Sparrow and Tempest. Rejack should be reworked entirely as dead should mean dead, Last Stand and similar are always unpopular as they're a crutch perk for noobs to kill better players. I really enjoyed Vision Pulse and Active Camo.

Maps are great, although the B flag on Combine is way too open, probably the hardest to cap flag ever. I can't wait to see more, and I'd love a Treyarch classic pack (Firing Range, please).

Graphically it's nice, although I couldn't play it maxed out due to performance issues and extra textures were not playing nice. I assume this will be fixed at release so the game will look much better then. Presentation is top notch, the UI, menu and HUD are all fantastic. The Specialists all look unique and very detailed as well.

Performance was OK for a beta, some stuttering and I had to turn some settings down for 120fps which I shouldn't have to do but PCDev has assured me Black Ops II ran way worse at this stage, and that ended up running perfectly for me so I'd expect the same from Black Ops III. There was some issues with mouse accuracy though, even with acceleration and the like disabled, hopefully this will be fixed before release.

Overall it's a solid package, and easily the best CoD since Black Ops II, and I will be definitely be buying it for PC. Doing a beta was very smart, as I wouldn't have bought it after Advanced Warfare being so bad. If they can fix the niggles (Flinch is OTT, non lethals last way too long, some scorestraks are really bad for their cost) then I can see myself playing this for hundreds of hours.

Agreed, best cod since bo2, glad I played the beta too, in order to put my fears at rest. Now I can buy the game without thinking twice about it

I had fun with the XBO Beta but had connection issues with TDM but a smoother experience with other game modes, but that may be on my end. I like the Create A Class set up that BlOps 3 uses.

Didn't like it at all. Players looks ridiculous when wallrunning, the ttk guarantees you can't evade anything, and the hit detection was terrible. The maps were all just corridors with a million entrances and no personality. And what's up with the Destiny supers? Probably will skip.

Got to about rank 15 or so.

The movement system was just clunky, wallruns feeling more annoying than useful combined with honestly quite boring maps that barely used it for anything creative, not that it would probably be possible to be creative with the wallrunning seeing it as cumbersome it is. While it is nice that they retained the jetpack from Advanced Warfare, I found myself preferring that with its dashes and quick air dodges over this.

The combat was a constant barrage of shit that killed you. Most of my time was spending it running, seeing a guy (maybe), die from something I couldn't react to, look at respawn screen, respawn, run, die from something I couldn't react to and so forth. The time to kill in this game combined with all the fucking random shit going on with killstreaks, specialist weapons and so forth is ridiculous. If you snorted sugar this might be up to your pace but I can't see this being enjoyable.

The only thing I can hope for at this point is that the singleplayer campaign gets to be interesting like Advanced Warfare was, but then it is Treyarch and I honestly didn't think that the BLOPS series was that good except for the villain in BLOPS2 who was actually quite intriguing.

It was alright, I'm not really a fan of the specialist abilities or the map design, though. I wasn't too good at BO3, but once I started getting past the learning curve it seemed like it had potential.

Also, fuck concussion grenades.

My favorite CoD is Blops 2, and this feels like an extension of that game. I thought the hit detection was improved. Really enjoyed the movement and Specialists. Boost jumps weren't over the top like AW. It felt like a fun game I can split some time on between Destiny breaks.

Overall I like it, but not nearly as much as Black Ops 2.

The sound effects are great -- that's the first thing I noticed. Also, the texture resolution, lighting and effects look like they've got a decent upgrade. It still doesn't look like a game running on a more modern engine. When will they finally ditched Frankenstein Monster Infinity Ward engine that's based on ID Tech 3?

I view the call of Call of Duty games as an arena shooters. I actually enjoyed the frowziness that was Advanced Warfare's multiplayer as adding a vertical aspect to the game play made it more arena shooter like.

One thing I was not pleased about was the PC performance. On my 2500k at 4.5ghz and a R9 290 it ran like hot ass. I'm hoping that's ironed out by release.

I played it and the TTK for the game just seemed so short that I didn't find myself having fun. Whoever pulls the trigger first gets the kill, so gun variety is largely out the door.

I may be in the minority, but I wish they would have kept the movement from AW matched with the weapons of Blops 3. I don't love the maps in either, but at least AW maps were way more functional in relation to the maneuverability options. The wall running in Blops 3 feels so shoehorned in, and all the invisible walls that block places you should be able to jump make the maps feel so blocky and inaccessible.

I played about 12 hours of it on PC, managed to get to rank 28. I played a couple hours on PS4 too.

I really enjoyed what I played. Its straight up Treyarch COD, which is an excellent thing.
Really love the new specialist perks. The Sparrow bow is my favorite. It feels so damn satisfying. Wall running is kind of fun, it can make the game pretty hectic though, with too much flanking.

Was a little doubtful, but they seem to be pulling it off again. The game just *feels right*.
Felt the sting of respawns a bit, but I was mostly playing Team Death match which is probably why.

After watching the video: I could never be this good playing it on console, wow! I'm about this good on PC, but I can just never get the hang of such a twitchy game with a joystick.
