This game seems pretty polarizing. I actually really enjoyed my time with it on PC and think it is one of the better free-to-play titles out there. I think a lot of the negativity stems from the complexity of the gun part system and marketplace (not to mention the GUI issues). It takes some time to figure out what load-out will best suit you as a player and at first to even grasp this idea of purchasing gun parts to create different gun types (such as SMGs and Sniper Rifles). On top of that you have perk systems, two types of game currency, and hero characters.
It has to be a daunting challenge to have such depth, but also to create an accessible experience for new players. Once you come to grips with things, the game is extremely interesting. I personally enjoy it more than the Modern Warfare titles it unabashedly draws certain inspirations from. Part of that is the near future sci-fi elements (this is as close as I'll probably ever get to an Appleseed FPS), but there are also some interesting game systems at work such as the ability to control map flow through doorway hacking.
I'm actually re-installing this title on my PC right now after hearing this news about the PS4 release. I hope the team brings controller support to the PC version sometime. I know it's not a popular method of play, but I actually enjoy shooters on a pad.
*I feel like a lot of people are quick to write off free-to-play games without giving them their fair shot. I actually think the system in place in Blacklight Retribution is completely fair and not play-to-win. Players earn weapon part rentals as they level up, and in-game currency as well which can be used to rent additional weapon parts. A player that never wants to spend a dime can easily rent parts to retain the same competitive edge that a guy who spent $20 has.
