Blacklight: Retribution PS4 E3 trailer

I always wanted to try this on PC but it seems the game is very unwelcoming to new players and the whole P2W implementation was a major turn off.

Did you actually try it? When you first start out the game directs you to "proving ground" servers so you can get up to speed playing against people of similar skill level, and the community doesn't seem any more hostile than any other online game I've played. I also don't think BL:R deserves to be designated a "pay-to-win" game since most of the weapons and gear are sidegrades with their own pros/cons rather than just better versions of the starter gear.

Zombie Studios lost me a few years ago when I tweeted at them that the controls for one of their games was barely functional.....They replied saying I was playing the game wrong instead of owning up to the mistake that everyone had pointed out about the game.
Sorry you got a response like that. Which game?

The first Saw game.

The game actually did a decent job of capturing the spirit of the films, but the controls were so un-intuitive and the game itself was so buggy it made it impossible to enjoy.

I found the response I got from Zombie. It wasn't a tweet, but an email:

:( Sorry to see that. There has been a lot of changes since the Saw days. I hope you will give Daylight and Blacklight: Retribution a chance as they are both solid games :)

F2P has definitely piqued my interest.

I ALWAYS give F2P a chance because, well, its free! It costs me nothing to download it and try it for a few hours on a lazy Sunday.

Awesome idea to make this F2P and hope it works out for you guys.

i really hope that the 'avalanche' of ps4 exclusives arent filled with pc games coming to the ps4: blacklight, warframe, war thunder, etc.

micro-transaction galore.

I never understood this sentiment.

They are giving you a game, for free.

You can download it and play, for free.

You can pick and choose what you want to pay for. If you don't want to pay for anything, then stop playing the game.

Thats it. You have lost absolutely nothing. How do you expect them to make money?

Well, the ideal case would be restricting microtransactions to cosmetics like Dota 2 or Path of Exile, but I understand that model isn't necessarily viable for every game or genre. It'd be nice, though.

Its an excellent f2p game, and I can see it doing well on the ps4 as long as it gets attention. I think the PC version is winding down as time goes on and interest wanes, so I hope this news brings people to PC as well.

This game seems pretty polarizing. I actually really enjoyed my time with it on PC and think it is one of the better free-to-play titles out there. I think a lot of the negativity stems from the complexity of the gun part system and marketplace (not to mention the GUI issues). It takes some time to figure out what load-out will best suit you as a player and at first to even grasp this idea of purchasing gun parts to create different gun types (such as SMGs and Sniper Rifles). On top of that you have perk systems, two types of game currency, and hero characters.

It has to be a daunting challenge to have such depth, but also to create an accessible experience for new players. Once you come to grips with things, the game is extremely interesting. I personally enjoy it more than the Modern Warfare titles it unabashedly draws certain inspirations from. Part of that is the near future sci-fi elements (this is as close as I'll probably ever get to an Appleseed FPS), but there are also some interesting game systems at work such as the ability to control map flow through doorway hacking.

I'm actually re-installing this title on my PC right now after hearing this news about the PS4 release. I hope the team brings controller support to the PC version sometime. I know it's not a popular method of play, but I actually enjoy shooters on a pad.

*I feel like a lot of people are quick to write off free-to-play games without giving them their fair shot. I actually think the system in place in Blacklight Retribution is completely fair and not play-to-win. Players earn weapon part rentals as they level up, and in-game currency as well which can be used to rent additional weapon parts. A player that never wants to spend a dime can easily rent parts to retain the same competitive edge that a guy who spent $20 has.
