Blender shader turns 3D models into pixel art

Does this mean we could have 3D pixel art games?

As mentioned before, this program outputs bitmap images, so there is no real time 3D camera aspect.

At best you could have sprite based fake 3D, made from real 3D renders, like in the days before the tech was there for realtime 3D.

It poses some interesting possibilities. I've also heard it's significantly more expensive/time consuming to do sprite animation, so I wonder how much time/effort would be involved in animating 3D models, and then porting them to sprite form. Could it save time/money in the long run, or would it still average out to be the same if one did the sprite animation from scratch?
