Bloomberg: Microsoft Adopting AMD Chips for Next Xbox, no backwards compatibility

This is very disappointing if true. I have so many 360 games and still using the old model 360. Which is also my 6th set. I really didn't want to buy another 360. But I have start saving for a slim if there really is no BC.

Glad I didn't invest in XBLA. I really thought Microsoft would take advantage of the "locked in" factor of Xbox live where people won't feel like switching to another console since they are so heavily invested on one service. Similar to the way apple does it. I have spent $100s of dollars for apps/music which means ill probably always have to have an ipad,iPod, or iPhone. Microsoft is making it too easy to jump ship.

But still I'm interested in the Nextbox and will buy it Day 1:)

And after all the shit Nintendo has eaten over their account system.

No fucking kidding. At least the Wii U plays AND transferred my content from the Wii.

I'm leaning PS4 at this point. The whole online-only thing with the next Xbox is a big turn-off.

You think that's the only reason for always online? I'm sure it'll be part of it but its not the only reason. Considering where the xbox os started and finished they don't want to be caught without something if the next gen lasts seven years again.
Always-Connected is a big change from XBOX consoles of the past. It didn’t come down as an order from corporate and it isn’t a clandestine strategy to control players. It’s fundamental to the vision we had for this XBOX. From the ground up, we designed this system with multiplayer in mind – using new technology to realize a vision of players connected in regions to create an XBOX that captured the dynamism of the world we live in; a global, ever-changing, social world.

Wow. I honestly thought backwards compatibility was a no-brainer, what with the PC architecture already in the Xbox...Now I'm disappointed...

I have to say, the PC is a much more expensive up front proposition, but it's a solid long-term investment: you'll still be able to play this generation's games "next generation", etc...

Ive got no problems with that. I do have a problem with it tho if live goes down for a few days or i find try a new ISP and it takes a few days, suddenly cant play xbox anymore. Its fucking stupid.

I was just referring to the stage demos.

The nice thing about the switch over to x86 is that all future consoles should have full BC. Be glad it's happening sooner than later.

You say that now...but watch ARM or IBM getting back into the game and overtaking the x86 for price/performance/low heat/low wattage in the next 7 years.

*shrug*

I think the fact that not all internet connections are stable 100% of the time or run at even decent speeds across the world will lead to the online required part to be a bit of a check in thing. Just popping on once a week/month to up a license or token so Microsoft is able to check active consoles.

I just don't see the online required sentiment being nearly as bad as everyone thinks since technically the infrastructure across the world is not up to snuff to handle something like that.

Call me what you want but I also think Sony will adopt something similar in the future. If publishers rave enough about it, Sony will make it happen to keep them happy. It's in a way like achievements and trophies, except in the benefit of the publishers.

Not a reason for it to be mandatory.

If it succeeds, which is very unlikely IMO, sure SONY may follow suit.

But if it bombs then MS will either have fucked up too much to continue making a games console ( depending on how much they expect to make/forcasts) or they change it back to offline/online.

AMD have been making many good choices lately.

That's a real damn shame that both platforms are leaving behind their legacy. As someone that owns over 65 XBLA titles, this is a big fuck you to my investment. One that I believed would transfer over to the next platform.

With Sony, I can understand a bit more as the CELL would be a real bitch to try and emulate if that was even possible. The things that Sony's first party squeezed out of that system is amazing. It looks like both MS and Sony are starting all fresh and new next gen and I am at this point not tied, at least by purchases to each system. I had hoped that MS of both of the HD twins would have gotten this shit right, sadly that doesn't seem to be the case. An online only system, isn't that huge a deal for me but no used games is.

Sony is showing that they're about gamers and just looking at what MS has been focused on as of late which seems to be MORE apps and less games, that's a real problem. My only concern at this point is that I have enjoyed MS's first party games more than Sony's this gen, but it comes down to it, I have no problem hopping on the Sony boat.

No BC is a bummer. I wonder if they'll implement BC ala Gaikai? Must be always online for the functionality (obviously) and require a disc in the tray for verification?

It took Bloomberg this long to convey this info, when GAF knew months ago?
No kidding. WTF at AMD's stock soaring on old ass news? I figured the price would've already reflected AMD's involvement with next gen consoles. I guess not. I'll be letting GAF's collection of leaks guide my future stock investments from now on, and be ahead of The Street on video game related stocks!

I think the way Sony handled BC was great last gen. Produce a system that was capable of it and then slowly stop producing it.

What's Bloomberg's track record? Not that I care much for BC outside of XBLA.
No need track record for bloomberg, they just reporting same news from other game sites, right or false,so it basically confirmed nothing(even something like Jaguar CPU is very likely, but already reported by a lot of other game sites)

"Microsoft, based in Redmond, Washington, decided against an April event because it saw little competitive pressure from Sony, which plans to release the PlayStation 4 in time for the Christmas holidays, said two people."

Dat arrogance.

I wonder if the article is true and Microsoft genuinely feels that way. How can they be so arrogant? They've done well this gen, but not THAT well. Hell, in all likelihood they will be in third place when all is said and done...and Sony isn't perceived as a threat?

Third console curse

Ahh well looks like there is going to be two pissed off fanbases rather than one. It would have been cruel if only the sony faithful were the ones at the receiving end of BC nerfdom.

God bless nintendo. They truly are gamers first and foremost

In a twisted way, it's a fair assessment. If your aim continues to be keeping Sony from building a PC replacement, they're at worst going to be one of many Android boxes; and if your aim is just racking up the dollars, XBL subscriptions are literally the only thing that's made the division money ever and similar/better-value alternatives haven't really put a dent in that.

If they're arrogance they won't build a lot studios, unless they're "act like arrogance" right now

Btw why my name changed?

I dont believe a word she says. All this could be done with an offline mode available. You simply put on the box "recommended play with an online connection". Worst comes to worst, some feature dont work for some users. But in the end, they have the option to go offline.

That is a bullshit PR answer to make them look like this isn't about piracy or ending the used game market.

Bull.....shit

"Next gen begins when we say it does" redux

This console has the potential of being a gigantic failure at launch just with this always online crap. I can see it now, people getting home right before the holidays, try to connect, servers aren't reachable. I can see it now.

Great idea right here.

Sounds like corporate MS alright. (Also they won't really ever be in 3rd place, because the race is over...really let's all get over it, specially since the attach rate is in 360's favor last I check so I'm willing to bet that it will never matter)

Don't forget about some enthusiastic hackers that would probably be more than willing to bomb their servers for this anti-consumer move.
