Bloomberg: Microsoft Hopes Titanfall's Robots Can Save the Xbox One

Can it do what the original gears did for the 360?

I don't see that happening. Gears had 2 things going for it titan fall wont. First is the brilliant commercials one of the best set of ads in gaming history. The second is it was though of as maybe the best looking console game when it was released.

Can it do what the original gears did for the 360?

That's a good comparison. I don't think it will, personally.

TPS have more casual and broad appeal in my opinion. Even I got Gears 1, but I won't touch Titanfall. Especially being multi-player only. That severely limits this game's appeal.

??? I hope you mean in the US right? Because it's almost impossible for MS to catch up to the PS4 with the dominant presence it has worldwide.

Yes, I mean US and maybe UK, but I am not sure of the sales parity between the two consoles in that region. Worldwide number will always be in Sony's favor unless something drastic happens.

They have definitely banked on it being big. Shows especially with the quick turnaround on updates and streaming making it just in time.

But hey, whatever lights a fire under their asses works for me.

I dunno about that, especially with CoD having the reign it has. Gears in particular is pretty damn brutal to casuals as well.

It's a different approach, as a big appeal of that franchise was it being like "okay, THIS is next gen".

I don't know why people are expecting the 360 version to do well. Haven't third party game sales slowed down on the 360/PS3 since the new consoles came out?

Does the Xbox One really need saving? It's not like it flopped. 3-4 million in 4 months is still good. I guess the problem is that the sales dropped like a cliff.

It's pretty sad that they're relying on a game that's available on the PC too. Hopefully they're starting to realize the importance of exclusives.

I think this is less of a factor then people are making it out to be.

I don't know why MS didn't ask for the PC version to be delay for 2-3months.
People would then need to make a choice in buying a $500 console for the game, or wait and save $440 to play on their PC instead.
Because who doesn't have a decent computer made in 2005? My regular laptop can play TF for goodness sake.
PC sales will hurt the X1 console sales so bad.
I guess we will see next month if people actually want to buy a $500 console instead of $60 to play the game on the PC.

Ok, then in that case, yes I agree. It's going to be a very interesting month. Between Titanfall, Second Son, MS's strong bundles, and even a wildcard like Sony's VR announcement, I can't tell who's going to walk out of this month with more momentum in the US and UK.

*Popcorn ready*

What would the reaction be if the PS4 outsells the Xbone in March's NPD?

I'd be surprised if that happens, but I'm more interested in what the gap is going to be. If they can't considerably sell more units with their "system selling" title then you might as well pack it in and accept your position as a distant second because nothing else is going to help you. They're even throwing in a free copy of Forza for a limited time so the Titanfall bundle + Forza 5 is a pretty good deal for $499.

Because EA wants money. It already cost Microsoft a ton just to keep it off the PS3/PS4. I can't imagine how much it would cost to reduce their "potential sells" by 33%+ Theres a very small Xbox one userbase, and 360 game sales have slowed.

It doesn't work like that. Forza does not come with the Titanfall bundle.

Interesting. My poll was originally posted in the OT thread for Titanfall. Maybe 2 people chose the PS4 option. When I posted the poll in this thread, the PS4 option has gone way up to 2nd place behind PC. I think that says something about this thread.

Yep. If not in March, they're toast.

The rest of the year is going to be a steady stream of 3rd party games with better versions on PS4. Then they just have an HD remake as their big holiday game, Halo 2.

Sony doesn't have a great lineup either for 2014, but they have the momentum, and the 3rd party advantage.

With no reporting of preorder numbers (something MS have done in the past with Halo and Gears) and the fact that Titanfall has been the main reason pushed by observers and X1 fans alike to own the console from day one I think there are two possibilities .......

1. Preorder numbers are not that fantastic, certainly not enough for MS to make a song and dance about (and they need something positive to make a song and dance about).

2. A majority of sales of consoles based on Titanfall have already happened and numbers of consoles sales from game launch (especially in the first month or two) will not be as significant as many are predicting / hoping.

The fact that the game also launches on PC on day one and 360 later also diminishes it's ability to drive hardware, it lacks the extent of a system selling game due to the fact it is not really an exclusive in the true sense of the word.

It's a massive expectation being placed upon the game to be the salvation of the X1, in the short term at least.

You answered your own question there. The userbase needs to continue to grow at a decent pace. A 3-4 million jumpstart doesn't guarantee longterm success.

Well, they need to keep throwing more money at EA to ask for that delay on the PC.
Such a horrible strategy because the PC scene>PS4.
It is really hard to convince anyone to buy a PS4/X1 for a game that they can get on their PC(assuming their PC has the spec that can run HL2).

So you wanted Microsoft to pay more money to EA to hold back the PC release? The PC crowd is a pretty ravenous bunch that's been screwed over by Microsoft repeatedly. The name 'Respawn' would have been synonymous with garbage if they ever tried that.

I think preorders are an irrelevant fact this generation until MS unlocks preloading. A lot of people are going digital which ignores a preorder. That can't be the way they look at potential sales. I think the 2 million beta players across systems tells them more.

Also in the other thread bsigg mentioned that the preload may be unlocked either tomorrow or Monday.

I think people are overestimating the 360 sales.

I think the game itself is going to sell gangbusters, but it wont help the system as much as Microsoft hopes. My completely uneducated guess is that people that are really hyped about Titanfall already have their Xbox ones.

Titanfall will push some amount of XB1's, how much is the next logical question although the more important question is how many XB1 sales are needed for it to be considered a success in MS's eyes? [I.E. the exclusivity deal, the titanfall bundle, the marketing etc.]

infamous on ps4 is going to outsell titanfall on xbone, i bet.

I'm not convinced but anything is possible

Hmm... I'm not seeing what people are saying when they say the 360 took off after Gears??

US NPD monthly average 360 sales.
Apr 2006 - shortages over
Nov 2006 - Gears
Aug 2007 - price cuts
Sept 2007 - Halo

Anyway, I would hope and assume that Microsoft aren't really putting all their eggs into the Titanfall basket. I think it will definitely sell well, and will move some hardware, but I really think they need to do something about their price (added value with bundling is a start I guess) for a more sustained effect.

Hmm good luck.

For me, it's not even the best game coming out in March:

The Stick of Truth
Dark Souls II
Final Fantasy X/X-2
Ground Zeroes
Infamous: Second Son
Reaper of Souls (maybe I'll wait for PS4)
Fez (Vita)

my poor wallet.
