Bloomberg: Microsoft Hopes Titanfall's Robots Can Save the Xbox One

Jeez, I can't believe people would say things like, "I can't wait for the Xbox One to die." Competition is good for the industry. Microsoft has stumbled with the start of Xbox One but it wasn't like Sony got off to a great start with the PS3. You want to see what no competition can do in the gaming industry? Just look at the Madden franchise.

Bullshit hyperbole at it's finest.

Also, how convenient he chooses one of Sony's weakest exclusive years...

Are you high?

Yes, Halo is still huge, and second only to GT (not for long), but this sentence is fantasy.

He didn't specify which Uncharted or Killzone games, or which Halo title, making this hard to fact-check.

But it can be verified that as of 2010 Halo 3 outsold Resistance 1-2, Uncharted 1-2, Killzone 2 and God of War III combined.

Halo 4 raked in $220 million on launch day, making it the largest-grossing Halo launch. No idea how many copies that translated to, but sold 4 million by the end of the year.

The last reported figure for The Last of US was 3.4 million copies sold, the last reported for Infamous was 1.2 million sold, the last reported for Uncharted 3 was 3.8 million shipped.

The sooner the Xbone dies the better, i can't think of a single franchise in their lineup i can't live without. I want developers to focus on the best hardware and i don't want MS buying exclusives from third parties. I was mainly a 360 gamer last gen but the way MS dumped it and how they tried to fuck people over with their original plans has made me loathe the console. I want it dead as soon as possible.

Are you sure about that?

With no serious competition, why would Sony spend any more money - that they can ill afford on their platform anyway?

The PS5? Why bother? There's nothing to compete with it. Why spend money on innovation?

Competition is healthy. In fact you should be thanking MS. Because when this generation ends - you can bet your bottom dollar that MS will build a powerhouse next time round. They won't want this to happen again. If MS build a monster next gen, you can also bet on Sony building something to match or surpass it as well.

Who benefits? You and me.

Don't buy an X1. Watch it 'die' if you will. I guarantee the games industry will be an even worse place to be if that happens.

In fact, if we are sensible and take pride in our hobby - we should buy both machines if we want this industry to do well.

Currently, I have an X1. Maybe I should buy a PS4 too.

Dude, wtf?

Are they not given a chance at redemption? I know Sony didn't try to pull the same anti-consumer policies, but imagine if this was everyone's attitude in 2007? We would be pretty fucked today. I think the Xbox division (since kicking Mattrick's toxic ass out of the business) has really been making strides to better themselves and start to focus on gamers. In a few years time, I think you'll look back at your comments as extremely premature.

his post was pretty brutal but I see where he's coming from. I considered MS' chance for redemption would come at the next-gen reveal in May, seeing that they had no plans to deviate from the horrible waning years of the 360 told me all I needed to know.

I think they realize full well what they need to do. They need to cut price and do it FAST. The ship is taking on water, and there's not much time left to save it.

Not too sure its time to make such a bold statement, yet.
Titanfall will push enough consoles for Microsoft to be in the clear until E3 where they can give people a better incentive to buy the machine.

If things go right for MS and Titanfall, yes i can see this working as you explained.

For the sake of gaming...I wish no doom and gloom for Xbox One..there are a lot of exciting games coming for it. I hope they can truly rebound from all the silly mistakes they made. They just need to swallow their pride like Sony did with PS4. All the lies and BS statements MS has been making gives me bad feelings but still..they can pull it off if TF sells consoles and they nail E3.

What, you mean like the Killzone: Shadow Fall bundle?

which you paid extra for.

try again.

You don't seem to understand.

Buying the PS4 KZ:SF Bundle ($450 if I remember correctly) is saving the consumer about $10 off the MSRP of both.

Buying the XBO Titanfall Bundle ($499), you are getting that game for FREE.

Not to mention, in the UK the Titanfall bundle also has near a $50 Price cut.

So a free $60 game and $50 dollars off the console.

Are you sure about that?

This assumes that there is not possibility of a new, better, company to take MS's place. Not many here ar against competition as a whole.

It wasn't "a little exaggerated". It was a terrible post, posing as factual info.

I think you need to look up the definition of little. Cause what you posted was hyperbole.

That's certainly a light way of putting it.
My point was that Halo outsells Sony's exclusives and blows them out of the water, and does it in less time. The closest one only outsold Halo 4 because it had Week 1 sales tallied up to "Day One", and they used Ship numbers not sales.

In 2 years, Uncharted sold almost 3 million units less than Halo 4, even though Halo 4 had half the time.

I think he was referring to Halo 3 anyway

The industry was doing more than okay with only Playstation and N64 years ago, MS was awesome when they entered the race, i ised to be a PS2 only gamer but once i got an Xbox+Live it became my main console, same at the beggining of last gen, it wasn't until MS dumped the 360 to focus on who knows what that the PS3 became my main console and i canceled live after almost 10 years of being a subscriber. I can't believe gamers are willing to give MS another chance after what they tried to pull on us with their always online plans+DRM. I don't want to give them the chance to become market leaders and eventually realise their vision.

In fact, if we are sensible and take pride in our hobby - we should buy both machines if we want this industry to do well.
.

No we don't. I have a Ps4 (exclusives and the best versions of multiplats) and a PC and I have no need for Kinect and their TV features so there is no reason for me to buy a Xbox one.

And thats the problem that MS has...their main exclusive is also available on PC (arguably the better version) why would I spend €500 to buy a Xbox one for Titanfall?

Xbone will win march. I say they sell 500k. Ps4 will sell out again around 350k.

Now if the x1 doesnt outsell the ps4 n march.... thats when things get interesting.

How's Gran Turismo 6 doing? :)

jk ;) Gran Turismo is it's own beast, and I've admitted before that it's above Halo in terms of sales power. It's also not releasing anytime soon on the PS4, unlike the games I did mention (sans The Last of Us, just really like that game and felt it deserved a mention, since it was Sony's best 2013 release :) )

Killzone wasn't free in this bundle. You had to pay extra dollars.

Not necessarily. Here in Europe there were two Killzone: Shadow Fall bundles. The cheaper one gave you the console and the game for €439, so yeah, the game wasn't free, but the bundle still saved you €20. The more expensive offer, however, gave you the console, the game, an additional controller (€60) and the camera (€60) for €499. So not only did you get the game for free, the hardware alone cost you €20 less than it would have otherwise.

I wouldn't be all that confident Titanfall boosts the Xbox One over the PS4 even in March. It's still $500 and $100 more than its competitor. At best I think Microsoft can expect March to be 1:1

Far too early for this. They have the best games and the best features imo, consumers aren't blind when they hit the right price point they will sell no bother.

That right there, to me, proves that past sales in previous games in a IP don't guarantee the same level of success. Will a new Halo sell well with people who already have x1s? Probably. System seller like it was for the 360? Not so sure.

This is the worst time n history to own both consoles. Exclusives are at an all-time low and multi-platform games are at an all-time high. I truly see no point. There used to be a reason to own both the snes & genesis, psx & n64, xbox Gc & ps2. Dyacks one console future is closer than it seems with Nintendo's ineptitude & MS shooting themselves in the foot repeatedly.

Hmmm, some say desperate some say not. The launch numbers say 'not desperate' but the numbers dropping off a cliff come January forward say otherwise. I wonder exactly what it was.. I mean demand out of the gate was strong, stronger than I thought it should be or deserved to be. As the sales stand right now is about how I'd expected it to launch, but it didn't.

Did it just take word of mouth that long to travel regarding the power difference between the two systems? There was really no hard evidence (and by that I mean for the average casual gamer who doesn't follow the fourms) that the PS4 was going to outperform the Xbone.

We all knew, maybe many did not. Xbox has previously meant generally one thing, and that was the most powerful console on the market. Xbox 1 was it, Xbox 360 was it despite all of the marketing to the contrary, in general it was superior on multiplats = more power on average. (please don't nitpick this point, it's not the point I'm making and I know that the PS3 can be more powerful if used correctly, but it was so rarely it didn't matter to most.)

Maybe people looked at the prices of Xbone and PS4, then thought 'hey this is the next Xbox and it's $100 more than PS4.. that's because it's the most powerful.. aww yeah' or something like that.. not actually realizing that the PS4 had much stronger hardware. It's counter intuitive for most people to think that way, why would an Xbox that's $100 more not be more powerful than the PS4? I think most people look right past the Kinect as just another controller packed in and figured the bulk of the money was still in the horsepower.

Then as more and more releases hit, and the differences became clear as day to the average gamers, that's when word started getting out and really meaning something because there were real world examples there to prove it. I hate to think what might have been had developers gone with some kind of partiy clause, then the differences would not be apparent and the numbers might look quite different, despite MS bumbling and insulting their audience at every turn. That plays some part also but clearly enough people weren't holding that against them at launch when it was still more of an issue than it is now.

So it must be that people are just 'getting it' and figuring out that it's an underpowered system and the first Xbox ever to play that role.

Dyacks one console future is closer than it seems with Nintendo's ineptitude & MS shooting themselves in the foot repeatedly.

Not to mention unlike last generation, you are required to pay for two subscriptions to be able to play multiplayer games on each console. Effectively there is less incentive this generation to own both consoles than last gen and far less than gens previous to that

In fact, if we are sensible and take pride in our hobby - we should buy both machines if we want this industry to do well.

What kind of nonsense is this? I have nothing wrong with people who say they want both to get the widest range of software possible but this? This is nothing but blind corperate welfare.

You do realise there are people on this forum that don't own either console? People who don't even own a WiiPS360, People who only game on retro consoles/Handhelds/PC's/Tablets/Smartphones?

Are you saying that these people are not sensible? That they don't take "Pride" in their hobby?

This sentiment of "we must hope the best for the Xbox one :- Gaming will die without it" Is just a stupid as "I hate Microsoft with the core of my being, they should burn in hell!"

You do not owe these companies ANYTHING. Not a dime, not a red fucking cent. You are not a caretaker of an industry, you are a CONSUMER. Hell, to some of these companies you aren't even that.

Competition is when a company creates compelling products. You don't go out and buy Nokia phones, just because Apple needs a viable competitor, You buy them because they have convinced you that they served your needs. Nothing more or less.

Any Anti-MS sentiment is borne of the fact that some point, the needs of Microsoft as a company and the needs of a particular group of consumers were at odds. That's Microsoft's problem, not yours. If they want to stem the hatred, prove themselves to those consumers again. If they don't, that group is not obligated to still buy their products just because it may cause some upheaval in the industry if they don't.

It really amazes me how some of you look at these corporations, developers and publishers as your fucking drinking buddies and friends. They don't know you and outside of selling their products to you, they don't give a fucking shit about you.

Take a step back and have some goddamn perspective.

So not only did you get the game for free, the hardware alone cost you €20 less than it would have otherwise.

The whole point of higher priced bundles of anything is you end up getting something near enough for free. You are trying compare a bundle of 3 extra items + console to a bundle of one full priced game and console. And once again, if you are bringing up the EU, you are comparing buying 3 items and getting one near enough free with getting the console cheaper + plus a free game. Totally different value propositions.

At the end of the day LTD is what matters and Halo is comparable to GT ( don't expect 6 to perform great GT7 is what going to bring the series back )
Sony has just as much high selling series as MS so it going down to that plus other factors when it comes to moving systems.

This is the critical point of early sales performance by both boxes. If Sony somehow manages to somehow steal MS excellent PR and positivity this month, then they will probably cruise a head MS for the next few years. If not, then MS will probably catch up soon.

I agree, now is critical, things will be set in stone more by E3....

If I was Sony I would announce VR before Titanfall lands to steal all their thunder.

MS is doing the right thing at the moment

MS be on titanfall from the start. Ideally the Xbox one would have been doing really well at the moment (a lot better than they are), and titanfall would be a key title in securing that momentum into the fall.

But now it is needed to kick start Xbox from a much lower position and I'm not sure it can do that (and I don't think it is fair to ask that of it). It'll get an uptick in march, but without anything big following it until at least the fall, I can't see that uptick being maintained. And Sony will get an uptick with second son too.

I really think Microsoft could be overestimating the popularity of Titanfall. It probably will boost sales by a noticeable margin, but it's still $500 and we remember how MGS4 was supposed to save the $600 PS3, right? Of course it helped, but not enough to beat the competition.

There will be a price cut come E3 if not sooner regardless of Titanfall, and I'm thinking the magic number will be $429. The situation isn't the best and everyone sees it. E3 has to gain a good deal of the lost goodwill back and dropping $70 is a great first step. Aside from that all they can really do I think is follow Sony's example from the PS3's early years and hit us with some great exclusives that aren't sequels. I'm disgusted that my entire Xbox One library is full of 4s and 5s.

Well then maybe it could close the gap in the US for a while. Didn't realize the worldwide gap was closer to 2.5 million. Is Halo 2 remake really their big game for the holiday?

If Sony can ship enough units to the US, they'll take march NPD. The gap will widen. MS have tons of stock on shelves so there is no supply issues, but I can't see titanfall being so huge that it can overturn a 2:1 sales lead from previous months.

And Sony may consider it tactically prescient to provide units to the US to protect against that, just in case.

It's like 4 months old and already talking about it needing something to save it? Wait a couple years, neither consoles have hit their stride. We're still getting cross-gen titles built on last gen game engines.

I'm curious if those that hold a grudge for the DRM announcement (which never came into fruition) also hold a grudge for Sony creating and implementing online passes to access game content (for 2 years) and making the digital only PSP Go. Chances are people see their company of choice as having no flaws and the other as being terrible. No company is your friend and all that matters is the actual product, not the ideals.

Buy the systems and games that are right for you, but a grudge shouldn't determine your choice. Mattick is gone and MS has been doing what they can to improve the system.

Well my Titanfall order was only £28 and won't help Xbone.
PC has best version of the game and is cheaper so it's get to hurt Xbone sales.

A little exaggerated, but!

Halo 4 Opening Day Sales: 3.1 million.
The Last of Us 2 week sales: 3.4 million.
Uncharted 3 "Day One" (from October 28th- November 3rd) Sales: 3.8 shipped.
Infamous 2 First Month Sales: 370,000
Killzone: Shadow Fall CURRENT (November 2013-March 2014) Sales - 2.1 Million

Now, Halo 4 First Week Sales: 3.8 million.

Uncharted 3 LTD (2 years) Sales: 5.7 Million
Halo 4 LTD (1 year) Sales: 8.9

Now, I can't find official confirmation for Halo 4's almost 9 million, but considering it was the Third best selling game of 2013, it seems legit.

Titanfall could be a REAL gamechanger if it has a solid single player campaign.
I doubt that a game focused only on MP can make a BIG difference....

Oh it can make a titanic difference. Competitive multiplayer gaming is huge.
It doesn't need a campaign if it's providing solid multiplayer value.

I don't believe Microsoft think that Titanfall will "save" Xbox One, or even that it needs "saving". It's too early for that, all it needs at this point is to remain a relevant option until the end of the year when things should look much more defined for both consoles. However, Titanfall is the next big release, and the one that they've been hyping since the reveal (no doubt in part due to their contractual obligation to EA). Bundling the game with the console is preferable to making significant price drops on all hardware packages (although that's undoubtedly coming as well; I believe they set the initial price that high mostly because they knew they would sell the first few million to early adopters without a problem, even ignoring the potential shortages, so why leave the money on the table?).

Here comes Citadel. One bundle costs 450 effectively charging 50 bucks for Shadow Fall and the other is 499 with Titanfall at no cost.

Why, hello birdy. Have a cookie.
