Blu-ray 2.0 profile in new PS3 update

i really hope they really enhanced the divx playback and hopefully make xvid videos playable and have support for 5.1 audio wmv's.

People cry about in-game xmb, but I'd like them to finally have one simple feature - video zoom (pan & scan) for DVD and BD so that the video would fill-in the whole screen with 2.4:1 movies. It's a nice feature for 720p TVs because you can get almost full vertical resolution of the video content (on a 1080p TV it would just stretch pixels though).
How difficult something like that can be?

So the TV must be on (and you can your gamepad to operate the PS3)... I guess I am missing the point of this feature...

If you have a speaker system, your tv can be off. And when the tv is off, you have no idea what you're doing in the XMB when using a regular Sixaxis.

Ok, it definately is caffeine deficiency coupled with the fact that I use HDMI for both video and audio going straight to the TV and so I cannot perform the awesome feat you are mentioning so my envy precluded me from understanding what this feature is about.

Ok, now it IS a very COOL thing indeed, I apologise for my denseness.

I'm using an HDMI amplifier, which then projects sound to my 5.1 setup, and image to my projector. This update means I can use the PSP to get sound out of the 5.1 without turning on the projector, which is totally awesome.

Great!!

No ingame xmb but hey let's put out a feature that 90% won't use.

Sony definitly got their priority straight.

So they shouldn't release stuff that's done because in-game xmb isn't ready yet?

DTS HD decoding would be a bonus, hopefully it'll be added in

If they offered DTS-HD MA decoding, there would literally be nothing the PS3 doesn't do that much more expensive players do, so Sony would be completely undercutting the other companies' business by offering the ultimate Blu-ray player for the lowest price on the market. So, we won't get DTS-HD MA decoding until a standalone profile 2.0 player that also decodes DTS-HD MA is sold for $399 or less.

Nice, I thought this might not be coming until May or June.

What movies coming soon use BD 2.0 features?

The only br player on the market should be ps3 until the others can top it then. Put the ps3 in profitable price range and stuff every ability they can put in there. $800 (I have more than enouth ps3s. This new price wouldn't effect me :D )

Xvid files work already. There's room for improvement, but the vast majority I've tried work perfectly.

A fantastic update to the PS3's media capabilities. Interesting that we're (supposedly) going to be getting another update less than three weeks later for the new PSN store.

yeah i know but by playable i mean make all xvid videos playable.

I wonder what's keeping them, at this point where they have pretty much given up any "closed file types preference", from supporting open source stuff such as MKV, FLAC, OGG Vorbis and external subtitles... I mean, once you get Divx in there you *know* what you are doing, right?

DTS MA decoding would be nice, but as someone already said it won't happen until other hardware has the same functionality at around the same price.

The PS3 really is the best BD player on the market though. That much is certain.

· PS3’s Internet browser will be enhanced: Video files directly linked from a Web page will be able to be streamed, and the browser’s view speed will be improved.

· DivX and WMV format videos that are larger than 2GB will be playable.

These 2 are big enough to grant a new update. Keep it coming Sony!

It's interesting that this is the first time in a while that we've got the semblance of an open timeline for PS3 firmware updates - assuming that the new PSN store on 4/15 is Firmware 2.30 and Firmware 2.40 with in-game XMB (and Home if we're lucky) is coming sometime in the summer.

Once all this is out, what's left? PS2 games in the 40GB models and DTS-HD MA? More Remote Play stuff? Everyone's wishlists are going to get dramatically shorter, we need to start thinking of new things to complain about.

I don't think there'll be a firmware update for that.. I think that's probably going to be a server side change (i.e. it'll still be a website. Just hopefully a better one :)).

There had better be a firmware update with a client-side app if it's supposed to live up to the SingStore.

Question,

I know that its been possible to resume play on dvds for sometime depended upon the player. With this pending update is their anyway that sony could parlay this bookmarking feature over to games as a save point? I know my question is probably wishful thinking, but I'm hoping that their is a possibility for bookmarking games as a save type feature

I think it might take styling cues from the singstore, but I think the infrastructure will remain web based. It makes the most sense if they're to have a consistent infrastructure across PC and PS3.

We'll see, I guess.

I don't think it will be firmware based, nothing they have told us so far suggests it is.
I think it will continue to be web based, just with a nicer and more comfortable interface to find and download things faster.

I don't want it to work like SingStore. SingStore is fine for browsing new songs on a Friday post-pub, but for anything older it's a pain in the arse, and it still seems to list songs you've already bought, which is massively confusing after a few pints.

It'll definitely be web based still, just a bit cleaner.

They could do it in Flash or make it more dynamic/AJAX-ized... it would still be shareable between PS3 and PC.

Or perhaps the client app has been there all along and just hasn't been activated yet.

It'd be a very very evil thing to PC users, if they stuffed SingStore style interface to Flash for that platform. Though great advertisement for people to buy the most expensive CPUs on the market. :P

Actually I take that back - any kind of flash is evil, no matter the interface.

Resume play” will enable PS3 to start playing a BD and DVD video at the point it was stopped, even if the disc had been removed.*1

Very Nice

They're already out. (War and Saw IV)

EDIT: As for the first good BD-Live title? *eyes quickly scan past both AVPs* uhhh.

Men in Black (no idea on release date)
Sleeping Beauty (fall)

And a not-so-minority still don't work. It would be nice to have full xvid/divx compatibility.

MoLog - Short for MovieLog, this feature promises to allow consumers to create and share their own added value content via blog entries.

yeah....

one of the AVPs seems to have a networked game, at least.

"At CES, FOX Home Entertainment showed off a Blu-ray version of Aliens Vs. Predator that featured an online, multiplayer game that had you throwing virtual knives and shooting at the aliens on the screen using the remote and competing against other players remotely. Other exhibitors were showing off trivia games with a PlayStation 3 as a demo unit. In other words, vendors and Blu-ray partners already have the 2.0 profile running on the PS3, allowing them to use the PS3 controller and remote to design BD-Live titles"

This is the only thing I can find when searching for blu ray 2.0. Its unfortunate they don't list movies with supported version included.

Even though I see little point using this feature myself, it is kinda cool and someone else might enjoy it.

A cool use... you turn the TV on let some music play for your guests and from work you change the playlist/song as you are coming home in order for you to make a stunning entrance.

I'd assume it'd only be real useful if you have a separate sound system independent from your tv, unless I'm missing something.
