Blu-ray 2.0 profile in new PS3 update

what is BD-J and was it supported before?

That is referring to the Java enabled games/media/environment that is used for everything, apart from the movie itself. Basically, if you are playing one of the mini-games, using the advanced menuing system, etc., that will not resume, so you have to select it again from the menu.

The resume is for movie playback only. Think "auto-save" :)

BD Resume is good news, but more and more titles are using BD-J which won't support resume. :/
It just means it won't resume in the middle of one of said functions. No matter what it'll resume within the middle of the movie, BD-J or no.

edit: beaten

presumably if i'm watching sunshine with the pop up behind the scenes things, the film will resume where i left off, but i'll have to re-enable the pop up things.

no biggie if it works that way.

Sounds not-bad. Don't have any BD2 discs, and not sure which ones are or will be though. I never had a problem with divx files > 2GB, but I guess one day I might have if it wasn't for the fix. I never use the web browser, but appreciated, would have been more handy if they had included the video playback fix when Stage6 was still alive though.

LOL to the wishful thinking of stealth updates every time a firmware comes. It's odd that 2.20 is coming so fast after a 2.17 which to my knowledge nobody knowingly benefited from in any tangible way anyway.

Anyway, I love the update process. Wish there was a solid date for it so there wasn't so much suspense.

As a side note, I wonder if they would even announce xmb improvements ahead of the update? Surely they've been playing it down long enough...

I think you are wrong on this guys. BD-J authored titles (Pirates of the Carribean for example) have to load up the software and start at the beginning. This was something that BD-J insider Talkstr8t talked about on AVS a while back. I hope I'm wrong... we'll see.

My guess is that it was just a very preemptive prep for GT5:P or a screw you hackers patch.

Great!!

No ingame xmb but hey let's put out a feature that 90% won't use.

Sony definitly got their priority straight.
Don't look a gift horse in the mouth or they might punish us with another non-update. I'm all for improvements to Blu-Ray playback.

I hope you are wrong too. Is my Planet Earth collection a BD-J authored title?

BD 2.0, pfft. Remote Control music on the PS3 is the real update here. Too bad Sony took the IR port out of the PSP slims because they could have assembled a pretty cool universal remote with the PSP.

· “Audio Output Device” will be a new Remote Play setting, enabling PSP to serve as a remote control for music played through PS3.

WIN!

I was planning to use my PS3 to play all the music at my wedding and PSP to control it wirelessly, but then I remembered the output will go to the PSP. Thanks to this update, I won't have to hire a DJ! :lol

So does this confirm in-movie XMB? Because right now, it logs you out of PSN to watch a DVD or a Blu-Ray.

Pretty much. I really did believe a while that the PSP would work like that. Too bad it didn't happen though.

Because everyone wants a remote where you have to navigate an extensive menu system to change the channel. Just get a $60 Harmony and be done with it. The real value there is the massively extensive commands database.

Finally, the resume feature :D I have a Sony DVD player that has an awesome resume feature (seems to remember nearly any DVD it has played, even if I take the disc out), and I was sad when I found out the PS3 didn't act the same.

DivX and WMV format videos that are larger than 2GB will be playable.

Hopefully this means expanded support for DivX as well. The PS3 seems to have problems streaming some DivX files from my PC, even if the 360 can handle them just fine.

Lighten up. I HAVE a Harmony Remote. I didn't say anything about the PSP becoming the be-all, end-all of universal remotes, just that it would be a pretty cool option to have.

Wait, did I miss something? I think all it means is that we'll be able to have a live network connection for BD movies. Doesn't mean that we'll stay signed in to PSN or have in-movie XMB (though that'd be lovely).

I'm just speculating.

I hope so but I doubt it. The PS3 media streaming stuff needs a lot of work IMO. Right now it's really clunky and doesn't work all that well compared to the 360.

The only problem files I've ever encountered were encoded many years ago. I dumped them, re-encoded or redownloaded... hasn't been much of an issue. Unless your problem is somewhere else. What DLNA server are you using? I've had the most success using Mediatomb under Ubuntu 7.10 after the required config file tweaks.

We just got online patches for Orange Box and COD4 this last week. I'm guessing 2.17 had to happen before they could put those patches out.

No PS3 Blu-Ray movie copying to PSP mem stick yet?
That has to be specifically supported by the movie. It's on a per-title basis and I don't think any are out yet that do that.

The way it works is that there is an actual copy of the movie formatted specifically for the PSP on the Blu-Ray disc. It doesn't rip/convert the movie from the Blu-Ray.

· “Resume play” will enable PS3 to start playing a BD and DVD video at the point it was stopped, even if the disc had been removed.*1

Honestly, this is what I've been dreaming of forever. This means more to me than anything in all of the other profiles. The only question I have is if this means that if I take a DVD/BluRay out of the drive and watch something else, will it still remember where I was on the other disk? At any rate, this improvement was the one thing that always annoyed me to no end about DVD and BluRay.

Wait....maybe I'm missing something but you could always play music from remote play on the psp, what does this new feature do exactly?

The video shows up on your PSP. The audio plays through your home theatre.

Just woke up, :lol

you can choose to have the audio sent to the PSP, or come out of the PS3 (whatever speakers its connected to). Previously, the only option was for the audio to come from the PSP.

All of the advanced menus, animations (talking skull at beginning of PotC), etc. are BD-J. The movie itself has nothing to do with BD-J. All of your movies will play just fine. The BD-J components are the interactive bits, NOT the movies themselves. Auto resume is for the movies, not the interactive bits.

BD Resume is the best feature in this new update. Now I can watch TV shows on DVD without going through the anti-piracy screens each time.

There's probably no technical reason to be signed out of the PSN when playing a DVD/BRD movie. Hopefully with this update, it'll list you online and "Watching Movie" or something.

I don't know if it bothers anyone else but why can't you organize games and videos by alphabetical order? I looked through "Arrange By" and it's just not there. Am I not seeing it or is it not really there?

Upscaling/BD decoding shouldn't take so much RAM that they keep you out of the network, right?

I'm still hoping that a future update will use a CDDB-esque feature to show people which PSX/PS2 game, DVD, or BD movie you are playing/watching. The DVD/BD Resume Play feature may be the very, very beginning of this.

I think my friend's list will be a lot more alive then. ;) If they do this however and allow messaging I hope they will allow the option to disable notifications while watching a movie ala the 360.

You can already manually disable notifications in the settings area of the XMB. It used to suck playing games where the radar is on the top right, and you have friends signing and logging off constantly.

As to the update, it's nice. I'll probably use the PSP feature inclusion the most as I don't really use my PS3 to watch blu-ray movies or movies of any kind.

I thought they took you offline for movies because it caused playback issues for alot of people. You used to not be signed out of PSN like somewhere around 1.5 IIRC.

* The ability to copy PS3 Music and Photo playlists to a PSP system. We introduced the ability to create Music and Photo playlists on the PS3 in firmware update v2.0. Now you can easily export your playlists to your PSP.

Since I only own a PSP so far, I have a question about this. What exactly does this mean? I thought PSP doesn't support playlists?

If the PSP doesn't have playlists, I'm guessing it copies over all of the songs/pictures onto a single folder on the PSP.
