Blu-Ray.com reviews Xbox One's Blu-Ray Player functionality

Considering the smooth experience, fast access, the absence of glaring glitches, the terrific and intuitive SmartGlass remote app, the awesome Kinect interface, and all the other things the system does well right out of the box, the Xbox One is the clear winner over the PS4 in terms of overall entertainment integration and, more specific to this site and its audience, Blu-ray playback. There's no doubt the PS4 will eventually play catchup and at least rival the Xbox One, but Microsoft has certainly taken the lead and embraced the Blu-ray experience, once its rival, with open arms and an advanced, enjoyable, and accurate interactivity that's nothing short of a terrific experience all round. Oh, and it also plays some great video games. The Xbox One comes very highly recommended.
Nice. Xbox One seems to be the definitive entertainment device in comparison to PS4, Apple TV and Google TV.

Xbox One supports remotes.

They specified it loads discs faster, at least as far as movies are concerned, and didn't have any playback issues.
How much faster? Because Blu-Rays on the PS4 load extremely fast. At least the 3 Blu-Rays i have watched so far.

Also their problem with some of the disc might be because of a faulty machine because Star Trek into Darkness gave me 0 problems last night.

I'm sorry but what the fuck else matters besides that?

If you're an enthusiast you're going to by a player where picture is excellent not one where picture is solid - which is their point. Both the XB1 and PS4 (rather oddly IMHO) seem to be targeting general usage viewer at this point with XB1 going by this review getting the nod for better controls/options.

Plays BDs well, for starters, and loads them faster. On top of that, the device offers enhanced functionality via Smart Glass and Kinect.

Looks like they load faster, though "playing them well" is wide open for speculative interpretation. Some titles there was a second or two difference. I don't know how much future FW updates can alleviate that issue.

I don't think it's possible to care any less about smart glass and Kinect when watching a BRD. For me at least.

Yeah I know. I was just being a bastard.

so both PS4 and Xbox One are bad Blu-ray players.

Sony BDP S5100 is $90/80 and it's one of the best blu-ray players in the market, how in hell these $400 and $500 "all on one entertainment machines" don't have good blu-ray players and features and adjustments in them :/

Because Game Console.

Im not sure why everyone is jumping the gun and pretending features cant be added via FW updates. Im sure PS4/XB1 will have better BR functionality as it progresses. Its safe to say Sony added alot of features to PS3 via updates, so it looks good for PS4 in that sense.

Again, that's irrelevant to the site's stance and personal experiences. It's not "speculative", they had playback issues and documented them.

It's speculative to say across the board, in every instance, playback will be inferior to another platform because they witnessed (what appear to be) isolated issues.

So should their experience be completely disregarded because you *might* not experience the same issues they did?

Your quote, not mine. In general, the PS4 doesn't play BDs well. As you said, that was the reviewers experience, not that of every user. So how is that not speculative?

We're discussing the reviews at hand, so it's not a speculative interpretation. They had major playback issues with the PS4, while they did not experience any with the Xbone.

Incorrect. It's not ONLY two movies. It's two of the movies they tried out.

So do you have any proof of other movies ?

Genuinely surprised Sony let the PS4 get beat as a BRD player. That's going to be one of the factors when I decide to get one of these consoles.

I've watched about 5 Blu-Ray movies at this point on my PS4 and other than the lack of a dedicated remote (I don't like to use a controller for movie watching) and a clear lack of the functionality compared to its older sibling PS3 it still is solid and functional. Picture and sound were crystal. I guess I fall under the "casual" label when it comes to movies but it gets the job done imo. It seems Xbox One got higher marks based on the fringe parts of the experience smart glass etc.

My response was in this thread about this review, and responding to someone who wanted a summary. The summary of both reviews is that the Xbone is the superior player because it loads faster, had no playback issues, and has more functionality. Simple as that.

So do you have any proof of other movies ?

No, but to assume that there are only two Blu-Rays in existence that have playback issues on the PS4 is a bit ludicrous.

It is a complete travesty and is inexcusable that NEITHER system has a remote sold separately or comes with the system. But since Sony actually pioneered blu ray more in the beginning they are worse.

No mention of crushed blacks. I'm going to guess the people that have complained about crushed blacks have incorrectly calibrated displays or capture cards.

The irony.

Give them some time. They said they are concentrating on the gaming side of things and I'm sure the PS4 will be the multimedia beast soon enough. That said, I feel your pain. I love my PS3's Blu-Ray remote and use it for all movies and streaming on Amazon Instant, Netflix etc. Thing is always by my side.

Not picking on you, but the implication seemed that the PS4 failed to be a competent Blu-ray player, which clearly was never even hinted at in this particular review. Unless you count the longer load times (which in some cases were one second), the only playback issue reported was a delay when skipping chapters on the PS4.

I can only hope both platforms will benefit from future firmware updates.

You don't consider their issues with Beauty and the Beast and Star Trek to be playback issues worth noting?

Yep, works great when watching TV on my DirecTV DVR, Youtube, games, almost anything that has a picture can be paused with a quick hollar at the Box.

That command never worked for me during Blu-Ray playback (but perfectly during games). Is it real?

Apart from that, I actually had issues with the player. Oddly, sound and picture are often, but not always, not in perfect sync. The very same movie sometimes works and sometimes doesn't work, and I could not yet track down the reason. It also doesn't always remember the exact position where I left the movie to do something else. I never had these problems with the PS3.

To assume the ps4 has major problems with bds over 2 movies is ludicrous.

My point was the review experienced playback issues, major ones, with PS4, and experienced none with Xbone. Again, you *might* not experience these issues yourself, but that's the experience of the reviewer. It happened on two of the discs they tried, but that doesn't mean there are only two existing BDs that would have experienced issues.

Oh... so Xbone playback has issues too?

PS3 still the way to go it seems.

At least I had those issues, don't know if the HDMI lip sync doesn't work properly with my setup. But as I said, I never had audio/video sync issues with any other device in my setup.

It's pretty clear if you use the ps4's blu ray playback that it is bare bones in favor of other (frankly more important) launch things.

Hopefully it gets a nice firmware update to make it better, until then I am still using my ps3.

Yea, the PS3 was my first Blu-ray player and even IT started off very bumpy, quite a few titles didn't even play, but at least it loaded discs faster than my sister's Samsung standalone player. Initially this is to be expected I guess, but so far the Xbone seems to have the better BD player right out of the box. Both will likely be just fine after some firmware updates.

I'm curious about this statement. What blu-ray functionalities did they take out of the PS4?

I've heard multiple times now that the PS3 is better at blu-rays than the PS4, but I don't know in what specific ways.

This site again?

As I said before the PS4 BD player is exactly the same as the PS3 player except you have faster loading movies.

The PS3 BD player was widely considered to be the best on the market throughout the lifespan of the system lol. Now copy / paste the same stuff to a new system and making it faster is a bad thing ... the best becomes bad? Odd.

The gripes this site has I do not experience at all. They must have a faulty machine or something.

Is there any noticeable lag when skipping chapters, or any performance issues if you're background downloading?

I'm not sure about your claim of the PS3 being the best on the market...
