I hate you and your local store.

I doubt they actually will since that would make them like the first store in America to have it.

The store has a pretty awesome policy where if you put your name on the call list for an upcoming game and pick it up within a week of them calling, you get 20% off.

CSI has the new Catard Card Xpack.

Stan Hilinski is working on a Crokinole board for me. The wait is excruciating!

I'm getting into Heroscape... something about guys from different universes getting together and beating the crap out of each other is the best thing ever. I think I'd play anything with that premise.

Astro, let me know how that Magic deck works out for you guys. I used to play a decade+ ago, and own a single deck these days. My roommate has a good amount of cards but they're all from Ice Age era. The only thing I have to worry about from his decks are Landwalking creatures. Aside from that, its a slaughter. The imbalance is crazy.

Just picked up Settlers of Catan Card Game yesterday on a whim to try and get the wife into this type of boardgaming (as opposed to stuff like Monopoly, Battle of the Sexes, Scattergories, etc...)

I hope I chose a good entry game. I really want to get into some of these. Dominion and Pandemic both look very intriguing.

On a separate note, I have a World of Warcraft: The Boardgame in pristine collection (includes some very nice organizers for all the tokens and such) that I NEVER play (wife isn't into the hardcore fantasy rpg stuff) and all my local buds aren't too interested in boardgaming either. I would like to trade this to anyone who wants it for a/some boardgames like I mentioned above of equal value.

I've never done trading on GAF before, but I nothing but positive feedback on ebay (artadius) as well as on Goozex (artadius) as far as these things go.

I've found that Pandemic is a good option for gaming with the significant other, mainly becuase it's fairly simple, and you work together. The Catan Card game can be a little rough, since it's a little complicated (more so than the board game) and is more confrontational (you can destroy each other's victory points, etc.)

yeah catan card is pretty heavy for a gateway game but i guess it just depends on how comfortable your SO is with game concepts

I will not tolerate any Scattergories naysaying in these parts.

Awesome! Went back to the local game store to get out of the crazy heat today and play some games and the same person who told me that Dominion might be in today now says that not only did it not show up but that now it is pushed back to August. No one is talking about a delay on BGG so I am hopefull it will still be next week.

Dorked out to this beast all holiday weekend:

With the release of War in the Pacific: Admirals Edition for the PC, I busted out this for a play through in the full campaign (Dec. 1941-1944/45 usually) over the next month or so. Silent War is a solitaire simulation of the USA's unrestricted submarine warfare against Japan in WW2, and you play the role of US commander of the Pacific submarine fleet. The game is exquisitely designed for both historical accuracy and playability, and wonderfully encapsulates the tension and challenge of the early part of the US submarine effort (bad torpedoes, short patrols, interruption of commerce raiding to evacuate personnel, etc.) and ramps up just as well to the later periods. It's one of the best solitaire war games you'll find, IMO.

My first game was a wreck-I missed my tonnage goals by 30% thanks to a mix of aggressive posturing damaging too many ships (keeping them in port for repairs) and really terrible luck with duds on my patrols. If I had played smarter I think I could have almost got to the goal and kept my job instead of being sacked by CINCPAC.

My current game is off to a hot start-I belted out 40k tonnage in December, but I expect that to diminish some as repairs start to mount and replacements only trickle in slowly at start. I think I'll make the Feb. 1943 goal just fine, but I'll need to tighten up my S-boat patrols and try to ramp up my kill count on even the small merchants to help my people figure out WTF is wrong with these shitty torpedoes (the game models the effects of the terribad Mark 14 torpedo in brutal detail).

The designer (who is like always posting on consimworld answering questions, he owns ) is working on a early Atlantic WW2 simulation like Silent War for the German U-boats. He broke up the war into 2 volumes since it would wind up being like 500 or so subs (and the games have EVERY sub in service in them).

I also played some Magic Online on Friday and got to a semifinals finish in an extended format tournament before losing in a close match in game 3. I wouldn't have won in the finals-my deck's matchup was AWFUL to the winner there, basically a bye for him-but I wish I could have gotten to it anyway. Not really a board/card game but MTGO is so easily the best way to play competitive Magic that I figure I'd mention it.

Just wanted to pop in here and say I've got a few games of Agricola under my belt now and I can't stop thinking about it. I love what the cards bring to the game, and I feel like I've barely scratched the surface. Definitely money well spent.

Reporting back. It was a mixed bag. We played about five games, so that was good. My first note is that these duel decks are much less introductory-type decks than the ones they have on the XBLA version. Even I had to look at the comprehensive rules to figure out how some of the cards worked. The game itself was pretty easy to teach, but my wife I think reasonably felt that it was a bit too luck dependent. We're definitely going to go back to it. So far the Blue deck is 5-0 (me 4, wife 1) so I'm resolved to win with Red and I think it can be done.

Piling on to the other weekend reports: We've absolutely fallen in love with Battle Line now that we're playing with the "Advanced" rule that you can only claim flags at the beginning of your turn (thus making Tactics cards far more important). The game this way is so good, so fast, and so addictive. It's definitely in my two-player top 3 now.

Catan was of course a huge hit with the casuals. It always is. Has Catan ever disappointed as a gateway game?

Bohnanza less so. I'm not the biggest fan, but one of my friends loves this game so I picked it over For Sale to cap off the night. None of the new people really "got" it (in fairness, it was pretty late), and even though I've played it 5-10 times I don't really either. It feels like a cooperative competitive game, which is novel and which is why people like it I'm sure, but I'm going with For Sale next time.

Right now I'm learning Conflict of Heroes. Gameplay seems really interesting. Will probably sit down for a first game in a couple of weeks once I've taken it all in.

No wonder you weren't as keen on it at first. Generally, people need to move on to the advanced/complete/full ruleset version of games as quickly as they can to get the proper experience of a game. Starting with more basic games is always best to learn how to play properly, but once you feel the players have got it down you have to move on ASAP. :D

Though I do find that if there's not that much difference between the rule variations like in Battle Line, I will jump right to the full ruleset when a new game is being played.

And damnit Frag, I've been eyeing that sub game for a while, don't tempt me to pick it up. :(

Oh no, actually we've always liked it quite a bit. We had just completely forgotten about the variant until recently. We're usually quite quick about it (RftG), but Battle Line is such a light game I think it just escaped us for a while. The game is so fun and evil with it though.

What sort of time requirements does this thing have? It looks like something I'd want to give a shot, but I'm a bit scared by the bolded...

If you want a "heavier" cooperative competitive game, try Caylus, if you haven't. I really like that one a bunch.

Yeah. Caylus is heavy and, in my experience, pretty long. For Sale is a great palate cleanser and immediately grokable by casuals. The auction mechanic there is pretty pure.

The "full" campaign that runs from Dec. 1941-1944/45 or so (depending on victory / end of war conditions) will last about 120-125 hours or so. The game map is also big enough that it'll eat a medium sized table while it's set up.

That being said, the game has quite a few smaller scenarios that are very well done (ranging from 15-minute historical single sub patrols to 30/40 hour-ish year-long campaigns), and , most importantly if space is a consideration, both a very good Cyberboard and VASSAL module that you can use to save game state if you are going to pack it away for a few weeks.

Actually, I recommend using the VASSAL module on a netbook or laptop while playing since the game's chit-pull system goes a LOT faster when you set up combat via computers. You can even play the whole game in VASSAL or Cyberboard if you're really cramped for room, all you need are the tables that ship with the game for reference while you play.

It's not short. Then again, neither will be Hearts of Iron 3 or War in the Pacific. I'm fine though letting the rest of the gaming world pass me by while I indulge in my singular, focused excesses.

Well, if there's a way to save your state easily than I can at least consider it. There's definitely no room for me to leave it set up for days on end without my wife murdering me. Or my cat deciding he wanted to play.

I would estimate that it would take about 10 minutes to move a board of a Silent War game in progress into the VASSAL module. It will take about twice that to restore unless you are really careful about how you repack the subs (I use ice cube trays to sort subs by date of entry to service).

Note that the order of action in the game also allows for very easy "stoppage" mid-turn, since (for the most part, until you get wolfpacks but they act as a group) you manage one sub at a time during the movement, contact, and attack phases.

Game's a good $65 or so after taxes or shipping pretty much anywhere, but for someone with a crazy work schedule and lacking a regular roster of PBEM folk, having a solitaire game or two is really nice.

Want to do a PBEM game of Tigris and Euphrates with us? A few of us have done two now, and I'm sure I'm not the only one wanting to play another...

The Uwe Rosenburg talk had me thinking..... I find Agricola kinda... meh.

It's certainly not bad I suppose, but I rarely find myself wanting to play it over something more exciting.

Anyone want to trade? :D

OK I just joined in. I've never played before so I'll scope the rules here over this cake I just baked.

BTW , my real name is NOT Crayvin Moorhead. That's just a name I used when registering for the site.

After reading parts of this thread a while back I had the urge to get some sort of tabletop /board game to play with my wife , son (and possibly my two younger daughters). Ended up with munchkins ( plus one exp. need for steed) and zombies!!!.
The two little ones(4 and 7) love watching us play munchkin and they played zombies with us once with altered rules ( no event cards ) .And now all I hear is them begging me to play "the zombie game" again. LOL

both games were cheap enough as a step in to the boardgame world.

soooo

i guess thoughthammer and csi both have dominion and rvi in this friday according to the sites. damn it i just put in a big order. might actually have to hold off for a few weeks. no preorder bonuses so no biggie.

Box came today.

A Heroscape master set - along with a Marvel master set, things are already looking impressive. A couple more of these should make some epic battles.

War of the Ring - Sweet mercy. Gigantic board. I expected there to be about 1200% more chits and markers than there actually are though. Glad to see its all figures (215!!) and cards for the majority.

Game of Thrones: Clash of Kings expansion - for the essential Ports rule.

The group of friends here have picked up playing Mahjong recently, crazy ass game. So many bizarre hands.

Depends on which ruleset you use, there are even more variations.

My favorite is the 13 "odds": Basically it involves one of each of the wind, dragon tiles plus the 1 and 9 of every suit. Then you make a pair out of any of them.

I've been learning the Japanese style recently, but from what I've seen it is one of the easier ruleset without too many complicated hands.

I was very disappointed with Heroscape. Yes, there's plenty of geeking out for people who like building massive battle scenes, but the game seems fundamentally broken, too prone to lucky dice rolls swinging the entire game, and unbalanced.

My local game shop expects to have Intrigue by 4 PM today.

If this were one of THOSE kinds of threads, I'd post the Harry Osbourne sogood.gif here.

I'd agree if it were just rolling back and forth and counting die rolls, but the strategy of height advantage, line of sight, general positioning, bluffing via order markers, etc etc make it good fun for me.

I tend to get a bit bored when there's no luck element. Agricola, for example.

I wish I'd gotten into this when xpacks were a bit easier to find though.

Edit: Also, my big draw, as stated in a previous post. Anything with dudes from different times and universes fighting is pure excellence in my book. I can't help myself.

'Dying'?

Is this some new version of Monopoly I'm unaware of?

I mean when you lose all your money and retire your gaming piece. Essentially, it would be "over". Dying is what my siblings call it :lol

Ah.

Now I'm imagining some new rules to Monopoly that might make it pretty cool.

Going to try to talk my girlfriend into going to the game store tonight. Probably going to look for Dominion and Race for the Galaxy. Anything else I should look for?

what are you guys into/not into?
what level of experience with games?
how many players usually?

woo misclick on my first turn on T&E. oh well.

Played Silent War until like 4AM last night (yay for being on call /shift work this week). The game is at heart a simulation, which I really enjoy since it pushes to the forefront the historical issues that Americans had in their early submarine commerce raiding operations. There's plenty of leeway for a player to make good decisions to better the odds that they will meet the victory conditions, but the simulation is strong enough that breaking it is impossible outside of using loaded dice.

So yeah, very frustrating-went a full turn without sinking a thing, had to pull off boats to deal with political bullshit, tons and tons of dud torpedoes and close misses, two subs getting inexplicable mechanical troubles and having to return to base without patroling, two more subs that just disappeared en route to their patrol areas never to be seen again, etc. etc. etc.

It makes the small victories even sweeter though, and if you play it well (like I think I am) you can limp over your tonnage deadline by a hair even with terrible die rolls.

I think I'm going to get Empire of the Sun later this summer, depending on if Matrix's release of War in the Pacific: Admiral's Edition comes out and if I can find a decent PBEM partner (I had a good one for a few games of Kharkov Doughnut Disaster, so hoping he'll get this too.). Looks like it's got a good PBEM community going on on consimworld.

Sorry guys. I logged into that place not knowing it would actually make me a player.

I'm an idiot. I have NO idea what I'm doing. I haven't looked at a single line of the rules. Is there a way to kick me out? Or should I just click something to keep it moving?

EDIT: Ok, I just did something to pass it on. If there's a way to axe me, please do. My work schedule is not cool over the next two days and I'll just be holding you guys up anyways. Sorry for being a doofus.

So I've played two games of this, one with 4 players and one with 3. I'm really pretty impressed with it so far. It's got some nice simplicity (quick learn), and at it's core, it's a simple tile laying game. There's 8 different types of tiles. In the simplest way, the number on the tile indicates it's strength, but then 6 of the 8 have special rules, that give you lots of options. They seem pretty well balanced, and I never feel like I've got a "bad" tile. Having 3 or 4 of the same tile (you have 5 in your hand at once) kind of sucks, but otherwise, it's all good.

The two biggest drawbacks so far:

- Slightly unfriendly to the colorblind (me). This only really matters for the scoreboard though, not for actual gameplay.

- There's a couple things in the rules that aren't super clear, so I'll have to check BGG for some clarifications before I play again.

*****************

Also played 2 rounds of Dominion: Intrigue (!!!!). Wow. We just did random sets only using Intrigue, to try to learn the new cards), and already have discovered some pretty neat combos. Loving it so far.

Don't worry about how long you take, it's a PBEM game, so it's no biggie. I've got visitors in town through the weekend so I won't be checking the game super consistently either.
