I think this RftG expansion looks a little bit more robust than the last one anyway. The goals were a nice addition, but there didn't seem to be enough new cards for the price. I don't mind the price enough that the purchase is regretted or anything, I just mind it enough to grumble slightly :)

I feel like the game was really well balanced for the addition of the extra seat. I wasn't too disappointed by the number of cards we got last time, so long as the game still worked right. And it did, with slightly more complexity.

This time around seems to add significantly more, though, which ought to be cool.

Maybe that's part of the problem for me then, we've only ever played four player.

My group was big enough that five was appreciated. Now that I'm gone they may be less likely to get a six-player game going. Maybe at PAX.

The two player game certainly depends way more on your ability to select the right actions.

So coolstuffinc got space alert in stock which means my big order can finally ship whooo:
-space alert
-snow tails
-buncha counters for netrunner
-stone age
-ttr 1910 (my beloved set got messed up in transit)

I need a good game that is around $30 to round out my order from CoolStuffInc for free shipping. So far I'm getting my friend for his birthday Agricola and for myself Dominion. I was thinking Small World for the third, but I'm open to other suggestions. Cool pieces and decent strategy are pluses.

(Not Catan, Carcassone, Ticket to Ride, or Axis and Allies since those are already owned.)

Puerto Rico!

So I'm not sure if this was described way back before I subscribed to this thread and it just hasn't come up since, but through BGG I stumbled upon something that I find pretty darn awesome:

http://www.brettspielwelt.de/

It's a client for playing a whole bunch of board games online. Browser capable/java stand alone app. I've played some Dominion on there, and despite having a terrible lobby/game creation interface, the program is pretty damn fun for playing games online. Free too.

I would say that we should try and schedule some sort of GAF gaming on there, but the lobby system is so terrible that I haven't ever figured out how to start a table (lol). It doesn't help that the help is mostly in German either.

Anyway, if you sign up, my username is platypotamus, and I'm down for getting some online gaming happening.
I have to try this sometime. Supposedly gametableonline is pretty good too. I noticed one of these places even had freaking Robo Rally. I am still mildly skeptical of the online-play experience for board games though, as outlined in long-form stream-of-consciousness ITT.

I like the online version of Tigris and Euphrates.

Speaking of which: I started a 4-player game called Boardgame-Age.

Password: neogaf

Let's play!

I remembered it was father's day as well as my friends bday so I finalized my order.

Since my Dad loves Catan I'm getting him a copy of that, but I am picking up RftG based on your recommendations. I kicked out Agricola (I'll get it later).

Order will be RftG, Catan, Dominion, and Small World.

Can't right now as I'm stuck in an airport with pretty limited Internet access. Definitely be up for it most any other evening though. (Although I've never played T&E actually; damn you eurogamers).

It's turn based with email notifiers. So it'll probably take a week to play. The rules at BGG are pretty clear. You'll like it, I think.

We need two more to fill out the seats. This will be our experiment. If we can make this happen we should start an official Boardgame-Age meet up thread on the online side.

I'll start compiling a comprehensive list of places to play web-based board games.

Okay signed in.

Yes, it would be super dope to get a Boardgame-Age Robo Rally game going.

Nice. We need two more players, people.

Here's the official Board Game Geek page for the Tigris & Euphrates.

You can find the rules summary here.

There's a reason why its ranked number seven on the BGG charts. It's that good!

Don't worry I think I'm going to be learning the basics until my flight. Damn crazy euros and your nutty abstract concepts. Game needs more lasers and WWII.

edit: ok i learned the basics

Apparently http://www.gametableonline.com has one. I can't tell if it's pay or not but the site looks pretty spiffy. Gonna check it out when I get home:
roborally_800.jpg

so BSW seems pretty crazy: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/4239

Free and some games they have:
-Bohnanza
-Citadels
-Dominion
-Power Grid
-Ra
-San Juan
-Stone Age
And like 25 more, including Catan, Carc, Caylus, etc.

Haven't had the chance to figure it all out yet but that's pretty damn impressive regardless.

Also, join Flynn's game so I can learn Tigris and Euphrates!

edit: played games of san juan and lost cities on bsw. not bad at all. would definitely be fun to play some gaffers some time (ahem. . .Dominion). not the prettiest interface for sure (not even close to gametable, but better than any others i've tried), but the game elements are recognizable and the setup is efficient.

Vanished Planet. New addiction. Holy shit.

Family and friends played this game nearly a dozen times this last weekend. The difficulty variations do wonders for keeping people's interest and it's very exciting when you're all nearing the end and the creature is about to kill someone and you're trying to keep them alive and HOLY FUCK BAD EVENT CARD and MAKE A MINE!

...

Seriously, good game. Easily worth supporting the small company that makes it.

I've never really had the opportunity to play more obscure card/board games before but recently I've been able to check out a whole bunch. I've played Bang, Citadels, Munchkin, Ninja Burger, Shadows Over Camelot, Fluxx, Chrononauts, Catan and probably a few others. I found Fluxx kind of boring TBH. Chrononauts and Shadows Over Camelot can be great fun if people are semi-roleplaying, but they do both involve a great deal of waiting around because you don't have any useful cards.

I'd say Catan is probably my favourite. It's easy to pick up, has a fair bit of depth, requires some uneasy deals with other players and I absolutely love the random board set up. It's very well designed to make you think about your strategy carefully in each new game.

Puerto Rico is the next logical step if you haven't played it already.

All the Dominion: Intrigue cards leaked onto BGG. They look pretty interesting.

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/414099

Also I would be down for playing some Dominion online. I also noticed they have Pandemic too!
I've tried not to "spoil" myself by looking at all of them (yes, it's silly, but I love cracking open a new game/expansion and seeing the cards fresh) but I really like those I've seen. Increases the interaction a lot, which was one of my few beefs with the base game. Funny that the RftG expansion, coming out at the same time, accomplishes the same thing. Multiplayer solitaire is so yesterday. Some of the actions are just damn funny too.

people on online services are generally uber hardcore. this is because they can just sit there and cycle through games like a wow leveler. the few forays i've made into the online i notice i don't even play as well as i do irl, just b/c i'm usually half focused on grappling with the interface and also rush my turns to match the online pace

I was talking about in real life. I taught the game to my roomates girlfriend the other night (she loved the game) and I couldnt even beat her.

Right on. We'll go easy this go-round.

platypotymous, you in?

Yeah, I guess. Since this has been starting for two days I am guessing it is semi play-by-emailish, in terms of time frame? When you were recruiting the other day while I was at work I thought it was a more real time sort of thing.

Had to re-read the rules before taking my turn... it's been awhile, and I've only played a couple games before, but I have high hopes for non-suckage.

Oh I finally busted out some FITS tonight, and I don't know how I feel about it. I'm a RftG fan so clearly I don't need tons of interaction, but FITS just sort of feels like you're all solving a newspaper puzzle at the same time or something. Also it would be cool if the pieces actually slid down the board but they don't quite. I'm sure I'll drag it out every once in a while when really nerdy people are about.

Damn I'm surprised we completed a round so fast at this time of night. Maybe online BGGAF is a realistic possibility.

Also I just picked up Radioactive to complete my Robo Rally collection. :D

go flynn go!

now that i've fully digested the rules, this game is pretty dope. i'm almost tempted to get the tabletop but i really get the sense that this is the sort of game where anyone who learns at the table will get absolutely ASSNIHILATED to the point where it's not fun. learning over the 'net is nice because you can just sort of process the rules at your leisure.

bolded was my experience when I learned. I've only played 3 games, and all 3 of them were with a couple of veterans. It took until midway through the second game for me to feel like I could actually make some sort of strategic plan, and I still got worked in every game. I kind of expect to get worked in this one too, but am encouraged by your newb status, hehe :)

i believe it. euros, i tell you. gimme some memoir 44 and i can start mowin down fools DAY ONE

ps i finally got snow tails, space alert, stone age, and kingsburg in the mail today. gamin time!

I think the trick is to fully digest the lowest highest thing. Not to mention the fact that you never truly OWN those tiles. You score points for placing them and the buff you when it comes to conflict, but they're never really your property.

I've had a lot of problems so far with knowing when to engage in conflicts. I generally try to take the path of least resistance, and that has not gone well.

Just learned Stone Age and Snow Tails this morning. Stone Age looks awesome--great components and nice Light worker-placement fare. Really looking forward to playing it tonight.

Half of my board game group just had a baby, so I probably won't get to play anything for awhile. Terrible timing with the impending Dominion and RftG expansions. Going to have to try the hard sell on the wife with Power Struggle methinks.
