Wow, I didn't even realize Intrigue was a standalone expansion. I'm going to have a lot of extra cards.

Yeah, I'm actually really tempted to buy it even though I don't own the original (sister-in-law and I have a sort of communal board game policy, and they own it). It'll give me something to play while I wait for their new baby to learn how to sleep :)

BTW, I forgot I'm just giving a test for this second class, and I can get to BGG fine, so I can take turns as they come up on T&E.

Just wanna add that I highly recommend some of the other thread regulars (neverfade, iapetus, xian, fnord, cyan, excetera) join us for some T&E some time. Play by e-mail is jawesome and I'd be more than happy to be in several games at once. Here's the outline of learning the game I sent to entice a few people I know:

Rules here (read first, get rough sense): http://freespace.virgin.net/chris.lawson/rk/e-t/rules.htm
Tutorial here: http://gametableonline.com/walkthrus/euphrat/euphrat_page1.html (shows what pieces look like, good rough outline)
Summary here (wraps up all the key points): http://jonaquino.blogspot.com/2004/10/outline-for-teaching-tigris-rules.html
The online version is at BGG (just need to sign up www.boardgamegeek.com)

I'd also be down for multiple games. Not sure which other board games have the long term option like this, but I'd play others too.

Also down to meat up on BSW or the other service if a time could be scheduled.

That T&E game has been pretty ruthless :< We had a nice little community going on in one corner and in one round it got blown up and everything lol

If a couple of you are up for it one thing we could do is have the bottom two from our current T&E game (ongoing) face off against the two new T&E players and then have to the top two from that game meet the top two from the current game in AN EPIC CLASH OF TITANS. I do quite enjoy setting up arbitrary "tournaments."

Cool, will take a look when I get a chance.

My sister got me Power Grid for my birthday. I've played it once. Ages ago. I remember really enjoying it, but I don't think the rest of my group likes it. It may be a rare play in the rotation, but I'm excited anyway.

The "problem" with Power Grid is that it is long and fairly intimidating to casuals (not Heavy, but close), but at the same time plays best with 4 or 5. This is why it rarely hits our table.

Completed my Roborally collection with Radioactive today. The old WOTC release is really so much better than the AH rerelease, aesthetically. RR deserves the Days of Wonder treatment though.

Quick question: I'm thinking of ordering Pandemic, but it's built primarily for up to four players. My gaming circle is comprised ordinarily of five individuals. Is there a way to play it with five people and retain the game's quality? Or must I purchase the expansion in order to play with five?

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/402096 (I've only played with 2-4, but don't ask me I'm a Pandemic hata).

Vinci, I've played it with 5 players many times. It does work, but it's even harder to win - the extra player means cards get drawn out faster, meaning you draw epidemics that much faster. It also means you're heading to game over faster since running out of cards is another way to lose.

It can work, but you should probably rotate people in a 4 player game until people get familiar with the game - your early games should go quick enough that it won't be too long a wait for the person waiting out.

The real solution, of course, is to wait for the expansion.

Basically, I bought my brother Vanished Planet (since I'd heard Pandemic was 4-player and we have 5) and we all love it. But he's wanting another cooperative game, and he has his heart set on Pandemic. Is there some way to mitigate the difficulty by drawing epidemics every other player? So 3 for the 5 people? Or is that going to make it too easy?

There are a few suggestions in that thread.

As far as co-ops, I much prefer Red November. A bit fiddlier than Pandemic, and thick with theme, but tons of fun and can be played with up to 6. Also pretty cheap too as it's an FF Silver Line game (i.e., small).

You're supposed to draw two cards at the end of your turn, so maybe drawing one card at the end of your turn instead might work to slow things down? It'll take longer to draw enough cards for cures, of course.

I think the best compromise for 5 players is to stick with the easy game setup (less epidemics shuffled into the deck), and to decide right away (or within the first turn or two) which people are focusing on what colors to collect for cures.

And I second the Red November suggestion above. It plays up to 8 people and has the same cooperative feel as Pandemic in terms of "many ways to lose, one way to win."

Man, I'd willingly switch in a second - but something about Pandemic's concept has my brother obsessed with it. So I think I'm stuck with Pandemic one way or another. Not that I'm frustrated by that necessarily, just wish things were more concrete in terms of how to play with five.

If nothing else, I'll get Pandemic and play it with four at first to really get it, then decide if there's any variation(s) that could be made to help a five-player version. At least till the expansion comes out.

Thanks for the info, you two. :D

Random whine for the day: BGG really makes it a pain in the ass to mark a game as "owned". This really shouldn't have been something that required me to look at the FAQ.

If you're looking for a coop game, I have to pimp Battlestar Galactica yet again. Sure, there's a traitor mechanic, but its just a much better game than Pandemic.

I guess I got used to it over the last few years as it doesn't really bug me anymore. :D

I'd link to my collection, if not for the need for some semblance of anonymity here. :P

One of the reasons our group likes Pandemic so much despite the simplistic mechanics is the speed we can run through a game - other than Red November, all the other coop games can take quite a while.

That said, if time isn't an issue the coop game of choice for us would be Fury of Dracula (yeah, it's technically a 4 vs 1 game, but it's coop enough).

yeah i always found that word about bgg that they just put your name out there like that. why i'm just (astrolad) there

WTF, does that mean you aren't going to play T&E with us ever? Because it's way too awesome for you to miss.

I have terrible Internet privacy in some ways, really. The GAF detectives have already confirmed that a few times with semi-creepy posts/PMs. On the other hand, I don't generally share/do things online that make it too much of a concern. Mostly. I hope.

You sure do, beautiful Steve Rhoades who teaches programming and design at The Art Institute of Seattle and works on an indie flash game in his spare time.

Yeah, I promise I won't stalk you or loot your house unless you live in California and have Antiquity.

Pegasus Expansion announced for Battlestar Galactica!

This looks freaking epic!

New cards for Destination, Crisis, Skill, Quorum, and Super Crisis! New type of skill, Treachery. 7 New characters. TWO new gameboard locations. Cylon Location overlay. Plastic Basestars (thank you!). Cylon Leader characters!

Gaaaaaaah. Best thing ever!

I am really looking forward to this. My group has played three games of this so far and we all love it. This and Arkham Horror have become our go to games. The backstabbing and treachery really make it fun.

You guys up for some more Tigris? I guess we haven't picked up any new recruits yet. I've been trying to teach it to my wife, brother and some friends, but it's pretty damn hard to teach without a board (which is coming with my Intrigue/RvI preorde) ror a decent chunk of time. Well unless you're as nerdy as I am and enjoy reading rules and rules discussions, but most people reasonably see that as the "work" of gaming.

it's asynchronous--you just get e-mailed when it's your turn. if you can take 3 turns a day great, if you can take at least 1-2 i'd say your good. this last game took like a week maybe?

Sounds neat. I'm about to leave the office for the day and won't be in front of a computer all evening, but I'll have to give this a try. I don't suppose that the Safari browser in the iPhone would be able to use BGG's interface, would it?

I would call Tigris online a rousing success and will gladly play another.

I stunk up the place that round. Nice even score but a bit too low. I didn't get a single treasure and that hurt me.

You'd definitely be able to log in and you should be able to join the game. The game itself shows up all wonky on my BlackBerry and on platy's DS though. ymmv
