Sounds neat. I'm about to leave the office for the day and won't be in front of a computer all evening, but I'll have to give this a try. I don't suppose that the Safari browser in the iPhone would be able to use BGG's interface, would it?

The opera browser on my DSi handled it ok, so I'm cautiously optimistic on your behalf.

The wonky things you should know about BGG Tigris:
-You have to finalize/confirm every move. Even taking a treasure when you don't have a choice as to which treasure to take.
-You have to select which order external conflicts occur in, even if there is just one.
-You have to allocate additional support in conflicts, even if it's just allocating '0'.
-That's about it; it's pretty user friendly otherwise.

not sure if it has been posted... did anyone play this in their childhood? I remember playing it once at my neighbor's but can't remember if it was any fun.

I had this, along with Donkey Kong and Zaxxon board games. good times.

With Pac-Man, I remember that there was a hole in the bottom of him, and you pushed him around and he "gobbled" the marbles/dots that way. dont remember much else, though.

for Zaxxon, I remember it was a bit harder, and no one wanted to play it with me.

Donkey Kong was pretty fun, from what I remember.

Someone posted about this over at the Quater to Three forums. I thought it was pretty interesting. Especially since over on the gaming side you occasionally see a post arguing for or against video games tackling serious matters/history and whether they can do it justice or not. Brenda Brathwaite is now designing board games that do that. The game the article focuses on is called "Train" and debuted at the Games for Change conference in New York.

The Board Game No One Wants to Play More Than Once

Kind of freaks me out that after one of the people finished playing they compared it to Halo and said they would want to play again.

And does Chun li have... pauldrons? haha

edit: is that your picture? did you find that?
all praise to bgg

also i noticed bang the bullet got a reprint. i'd pick it up but i usually play with 3-4 and that game needs 6ish to work well

Edit 2: new TS map coming with the deluxe edition later this year: http://www.gmtgames.com/nnts/NewTSMap7.jpg most importantly, it will be mounted. i'll have to see what's in this edition, but i'll probably just hang onto my 2d ed.

I switched up my CSI order so that I could have some stuff in time for July 4:

-M:TG Jace V. Chandra: Damn you, Planeswalkers, for getting me into this after I hadn't played for about ten years. I like this duel deck because it's balanced and fun and my wife and I don't have to deal with any of the collectibility aspect and can just enjoy a nice self-contained game.

-Tigris & Euphrates: Thanks to Flynn on this one. I don't think it will play that well with two, but I enjoy the 4 a lot so I will bust it out on one of our game nights.

-Mystery Rummy: Jack the Ripper: We're suckers for Light/Medium 2p games.

-Blue Moon City: Don't let me down, Knizia.

-PitchCar Extension 2: Because nothing says July 4 like a giant PitchCar track.

edit: I also picked up Survive!--a badass 80s board game.

origins 2009 awards. who wouldn't have killed to be on the red carpet FOR THIS ONE!
Historical Board Games
Conflict of Heroes: Awakening the Bear
Espana 1936
The Battle of Monmouth
The Campaigns of King David
Pursuit of Glory
WINNER: Conflict of Heroes: Awakening the Bear

Card Games
Dominion
Monty Python Fluxx
Red Dragon Inn 2
Ticket to Ride Card Game
Trailer Park Wars
WINNER: Dominion

Board Games
Agricola
Ninja vs. Ninja
Pandemic
TOMB
Wealth of Nations
WINNER: Pandemic
Pandemic continues to get tons of life from the board-game Intelligent CIA. I'm not the biggest fan, as I've said here before, but I'm not familiar enough with Agricola to really argue it either way. CoH is pretty dope though.

I would have through Agricola would win based on the buzz that game is getting. I haven't played it yet, but it's on the short list of things I want to try/buy.

Astro, next year for the awards: you, microphone, streaming live cam... think about it. It's an untapped market.

p.s. Saw you playing Magic on Xbox the other night and downloaded it to try it out, but got sidetracked with Garou: Mark of the Wolves. How is Magic?

It would be a Dundies-like experience that would earn me enough GeekGold on BGG to put my kids through The University of Puerto Rico.

For Magic noobs or people who barely played it ages ago (i.e., me), it's a pretty great deal. Ten bucks for eight themed decks, and a nice hearty campaign mode. The only real downside is very minimal deck customizability, but the core gameplay and the addictive card unlocking more than make up for it to me. I'm pretty close to 100%ing it.

Some of these games (esp Race for the Galaxy) look awesome, but I doubt my friends would go for this - we are almost strictly Street Fighter people :lol

Any super fun 1 player games out there? I've always wanted a robust, complex 1P card game to play...

I am down in LA visiting family, and brought Dominion with me. It's a huge hit.

Wish the expansion was out already, so we could play with 5.

Why don't you just use custom rules for 5 player, like 12 side decks instead of 10? I'm sure you can find some good rule variants on BGG.

Speaking of Dominion, I was thinking of picking up some sleeves for the game due to all the shuffling involved. What are some recommended sleeves? Plain colored is probably the best.

Take a look at this list and see if anything catches your eye: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/32390. You'll notice that most are made for more. Arkham Horror is pretty fun to learn solo, but I don't know if I'd want to play more than a couple games solo.

Another list that might be worth quick perusal: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/42401

Race for the Galaxy actually has a whole set of pieces for solo play in the Gathering Storm expansion. It's pretty hardcore (and hard), but might be up your alley.

As to your friends, I wouldn't totally give up hope. There are so many great games out there for every skill level, theme preference, etc.

Played Arkham Horror yesterday. It's surprisingly simple given how intimidating the vast array of tiny little markers and cards is. It takes a bit long but its a pretty enjoyable game.

Honestly, I didn't even think of trying something like that, haha. It worked out pretty well though, as there rounds went pretty fast and there was always someone who could do something while they sat out (cooking, mostly. We ate a lot)

What the hell was up with that board game nomination list? There's a dozen games I'd put over Ninja vs Ninja, TOMB (seriously??), and WoN. And I don't think I need to tell you how displeased I am with a Pandemic win. Battlestar love, please! :)

And the card game category....haha, wow. there's not ANY competition!

CoH was the only thing I've even heard of off the other list, and even then, I couldn't tell you a single detail about it aside from name, so no opinions there.

I need to pick up a few things: Dominion and Race For the Galaxy. I've been waiting for Local Comics Shop to get them back in stock but it doesn't appear to be happening. Time to visit coolstuffinc.

While I'm at it... is there anything brand new I should look at? Games for 2 to 4 with low confrontation is best for my group.

If you mean the past few months, not too much. Space Alert is a pretty big co-op hit, but it's fairly complex and really needs 4 to get going.

Thanks for your help! I may just dive into AH/Race for the Galaxy 1p/multiplayer setups and see what happens. Both sound really fun.

We've played Risk and Axis + Allies before (great fun) but never had much time to learn/play a new game. Maybe I'll spring this on em next time we all hang out.

I'm a total noob when it comes to board games. Last week me and my friends decided to get into board gaming and bought Settlers of Catan, seems it looks like the perfect game for newcomers.

Nevertheless, we had a blast. We played and laughed from 8.30 PM to about 5 PM with non-stop playing. I know we have only seen the tip of the iceberg that is board games, can anyone recommend another game? Something casual and over in 1 hour, perhaps.

Ticket to Ride series is great for newbies, and fast.

I think Dominion is actually also great for newbs (recent tests have confirmed), and it is fast, and totally awesome. New (stand alone) expansion coming will allow more than 4 players at once too.

It's different, and it doesn't come up much in this thread, but Blokus is a pretty fun and quick game too.

this is a dope pitchcar track. pitchcar gives dexterity games a good name. (even though it's expensive as heck <3 wood)

So I played Cthulhu 500 today with my smaller boardgame group. I want to say it might of been mentioned in this thread somewhere back near the begenning, but I am too lazy to go search for it. It is a card game themed after Nascar, but draped with a goofy Lovecraft skin. Each player has a demonic car and you gather pit crew, drivers, tires, weapon/speed mods to give you a boost in passing the other players. Whoever is in the lead when the checker flag comes up wins. It is fairly amusing. Not one of my favorite games, but I would probably play it again.

Card-based racing? I prefer Ave Caesar for that.

Further to platy, allow me to recommend
Citadels (card/party game that scaled great 3-7, simple to learn, and involves bluffing, betrayal, and murder; also cheap) & RoboRally as always (jawesome turn-based robot racing game).

Other beginner games I'd suggest are Saboteur, Slide 5, Winner's Circle, High Society, and The Downfall of Pompeii. I'd toss Bang in there as well if your group doesn't mind player elimination.

platypotamus said:
Bang and Citadels are both great suggestions.

Isn't it kind of cruel to recommend Roborally though? Isn't it impossible to find anymore?
It is out of print, but it still goes for relatively close to MSRP ($50) and I'm guessing there are still some copies out and about (like when I got mine half-off at a bookstore, which got me into this hobby in the first place).

AstroLad said:
I actually have a full RoboRally set now, including the first-release WOTC edition and all the expansions. :D

How much did that set you back? /braceforimpact.jpg

I would totally rat my wife out to the RoboRally inquisition

A team has already been mobilized.

Eight score after some bargaining. All in pristine condition though. I'm actually getting sleeves for the cards even though I usually hate sleeves.

ON DECK for the holiday weekend:

magicjacevschandradueldeck.jpg

Teaching my wife some MAGICS with a nice duel deck.

pic322306_t.jpg

Heard this was a great two-player game, and the best in the Goosebumps-like "Mystery Rummy" series, so I'm eager to give it a shot.

pic268839_t.jpg

Starting off July 4th totally caszj with some Settlers. Settlers is one of those games that everybody loves so hard the first time they play it (like TtR). When you've played it a few dozen times you're like "hm, ok" but the caszjes love it. The luck is the best part of this game btw, not the worst like some eurogamer ubernerds who should just go play chess might contend.

pic273632_t.jpg

Oh yes, there will be PitchCar at the party. Especially now that I have two of the expansions.

pic305979_t.jpg

One of my fav party games.

Earlier, at the game store:

Me: Hey, is the Dominion expansion here yet?
Clerk: No, not until next week, maybe the week after.
Me: Bummer, how about the new Catan Card Game Expansion?
Clerk: Should be in the next shipment, but I told our distributor just to hold everything until that Dominion expansion.
Me: Well then, how about Twilight Struggle.
Clerk: We're sold out of that at the moment, I believe (he later told me it's out of print, NOOOoooooooo)

Anyway, on wife's whim, we picked up:
