Boardgame-Age

I think we need a "post pics of your boardgame closet" topic now.

Bought Agricola last week, only played it once due to the incredibly confusing manual. We were too scared to play the damn thing :D Stupid rules here and there and some more here... Until you actually play it and read as you go, it's not really that complicated at all. Of course we skipped the cards the first time. I'm loving those FIMO custom component pictures at boardgamegeek, going to try something like that too.
The thing I hate the most about this game is the box. No separate boxes to store stuff, really?

FML. Why did I find this thread. Couldn't I have lived on in ignorance? Curses.

My amazon shopping cart is now bursting at the seams. It will be ages until I can trim down that beast to something reasonable.

At least I found Citadels (with expansion) and Caylus Magna Carta for cheap, so my immediate craving for gaming purchases is sated. Some friends are coming over on the weekend, so that works out nicely too.

Anyone have any tips at playing better at Lost Cities?

I find I'm a very conservative player. I'll only go for one or two expeditions, sometimes three if my opening hand is great, I _never_ get burned on investing and not delivering, I discard at least 50% of my turns, and I generally wrap up my business three or four draws before the end of the game and discard the rest.

I normally will play cards after one investment in most cases, I'll hold out for two if I've got 4 or more cards of the expedition in my hand and want to make a big move. I'm not sure that I've ever ran a three investment expedition, except for maybe one or two times when I fluked into having three investments in the first few turns.

It seems like playing riskier would be the best way to score better, but I can't seem to divine what kind of balance between risk and reward would be best.

Please post a review on Magna Carta, I've been eying it for awhile, as I love Caylus.

Will try, but remember that I'm only playing the occasional Race for the Galaxy and Pandemic game with my friends - I have very little to compare it to.

I'm up for it at :30 if that game didn't start, but there's a pretty good chance that I won't be able to play through the full game before I've got to be away from the computer.

That one went faster than I expected. I'm down for starting another.... though I've got to disappear in about an hour at the most.

I'm playing (and losing) entirely too much Race For the Galaxy.

Anyone for some galaxy quest at :30?

edit: man i love it when someone joins a 2p game, plays 2 rounds, and fucking disappears.

So I got Arkham Horror in the mail on Monday and I have to say, that game is impressive and appears daunting when all setup. I played two solo games against Yig using four investigators. My first game I used Mandy, Joe, Darrell, and Kate and I had misread the rules on the difference between sealing and closing a gate. I thought you could only seal a gate by paying 10 clue tokens (5 to close and 5 to seal) or use the Elder Sign.

After re-reading the rule and reading the rules board on BGG I found out I was way wrong in regards to the gates so, needless to say, after following the correct rules last night's playthrough was a success. For that run through I used Mandy, Joe, Ashcan Pete, Monterey Jack. Playing against Yig again, I was able to seal 6 gates with little resistance. Mostly, I got lucky with the mythos cards and new gates kept opening up in locations that were already sealed.

Overall I have to say the game isn't nearly as difficult as it looks at first glance. Sure there is a lot to keep in mind but it all makes sense if you think about the different phases. The good thing is my girlfriend is more interested in the game than I would have thought so if I am able to run a couple of games with her it should be easier to recruit others.

so what do you guys think of the Space Hulk game? Is it fun?
I played the living bejeezus out of it as a young'un. Yeah, it's fun. It can get a bit tedious when you have to implement all the low-level game mechanics "manually" instead of having a PC do it, but you get used to it. Don't expect the best game ever, just expect a scary romp through a not-quite-abandoned spaceship. If you can appreciate the atmosphere and immerse yourself in it you'll have many a nice game.

Just think of HeroQuest. Ever played that? It's kind of similar.

Edit: AGH. This online RftG thing is awesome and aggravating at the same time. Players can now stall a whole game and at the same time stay out of reach of my wrath. This removes the whole satisfying and stress-relieving tenderizer bat mechanic from the game.

I'm going insane. Two games that took nearly half the day are now stalled because some jackass went to bed, or whatever. One of them at the last turn, in the last phase. Aaaaaaarrrgh.

That doesn't bother me too much, as long as the game picks back up. I've got 4 games on my list though, with times measured in days. :-\

(No time to join one today, got to finish up this paper and then ditch out to go to a movie)

I'll play you CT (might have to bail but if I do I'll let you know beforehand in chat, which I wish people would have the courtesy to do).

Sorry Astrolad, but it's now nearing bedtime, and I'm a good boy. If I start a Race now I'll not get to bed before mdnight, and that's a no-no. I gotta get up early tomorrow. Let's postpone it to tomorrow, OK?

New Descent expansion shown off at Gencon is apparently a Naval themed campaign system. It is basically a stand alone so it's not an expansion that goes with the last campaign system 'Road to Legend'.

No word if Road to Legend and this new campaign system will have any crossover or compatibility, but all the normal stand alone expansions will be compatible with this new naval themed one.

Seriously, it's like some of these fucks have a compulsive needs to join games regardless of whether they actually have the time to play them. There should be two areas: (1) Games; (2) Games for People Who Have Nothing To Do All Day But Join Games And Play Them In Between Snack Breaks And Talk-Show Viewing

jfc this ain't t&e folks.

:lol didn't even get through round one. what a pos.

well played an entire 3p game in the meantime. took 15 mins. amazing how that works. guess i'll catch the other game later.

edit: whoo almost at 1600 rating

OK, quick Magna Carta unboxing.
(Amazon sent me the german version - I ordered the english one. NOoooooooOh well.)

The box
The contents
Detail: The cards
Detail: After first preparations
The box part two (with the repackaged contents)
Detail: Card size comparison

Thoughts so far:

The box is oversized if you consider that it only needs to hold a bunch of cards and some tokens. There are no compartments to sort tokens or cards - however, they at least included four plastic bags that you may fill as you see fit.

The cards are a bit smaller than e.g. MtG cards, almost too small for my liking. It's not much of a difference though.

The rules are split into a starter ruleset, and an advanced ruleset, with a cheat sheet of sorts in between so that you can reference it while you play by opening it down the middle. Nice idea. There are several full-colour illustrations and the paper feels quite nice.

Most of the tokens are small wooden cubes, disks and cylinders. Colours are bright, and they feel solid, although the resource cubes are again a bit small. There's also a bunch of cardboard coins.

First impressions:

The contents would have fit in a much smaller box, which would have benefitted portability. Some parts feel a bit too small (but certainly not flimsy or anything).

Disclaimer:
The size issue may just be my huge paws getting in my way again.

All in all I'm thinking I got my moneys worth out of it. Can't wait to play it this weekend.

I've gotten into board gaming recently. A couple favorites:

Last Night on Earth - Great theme. If you love zombie games definitely check this out. It's leagues better than Zombies!!! (which I still think is pretty good).

Tide ofIron - Lots of rules, but really fun. I'm not into wargames too much, but it's very tactical. Tons of pieces, too.

A Touch of Evil - Made by the LNOE guys. A fun alternative, but I prefer the combat-heavy LNOE.

What's funny is how much better the real actor box art looks for LNoE than it does for Touch of Evil. I don't think I can get past the cheap looking period costumes and the low rent Nosferatu.

Have you tried browsing the LC boards over at BGG? I haven't played that one for a while.

I played a bunch of Lost Cities on Xbox Live (no longer available) to work out my approach to the game.

I played this for the first time last week. The first game we played was just the beginner setup while we learned the rules. The second game we played the defend the manor varient. That one was the a ton of fun. It was actually a pretty close game, but the zombies pulled it out in the end.

My boardgame group has expanded to six, so as an introduction to our two new members we made them play a two night game of Twilight Imperium 3rd Edition. Screw settling them in with something gentle like Settlers of Catan. They looked a bit lost while we went over the rules and set the board up, but after the first round they all loved it.

During the game I got off to a great start and was able to expand fast giving me a ton of resources. I was able to grab several planets leading toward the center, including Metacol Rex and the Wormhole Nexus planet. I was leading in points by a good amount too. The person to the left of me who I had been allied with finally tried to backstab me to take control of Metacol Rex (I assume for his secret objective). I was able to sabotage his flank speed action card, so he was only able to attack me with half his fleet and thanks to some lucky rolling I slaughtered his ships.

I figured I could take him out the game fairly quickly, but then two of the other players decided to join in on the attack. Thanks to my resource advantage, techonology (extra movement for all of my ships and lots of +1 damage for my smaller ships), and the locations of two of my three attackers I figured I could stand on my own long enough for the victory. I had some of the best ships in my fleet waiting at my nexus location, since it would allow me to strike quickly almost anywhere on the map. Unfortunately, they turned the tables on me when they passed a law in the assembly that no longer allowed access to wormholes. This effectively removed my dreadnaught and carrier fleet from the game (or until I scuttled them and rebuilt them).

At this point I was worried. One of my attackers was catching back up in points, now being only 1 behind me. Luckily the bureaucracy card hadn't been taken for a few turns and had some bonus tabs on it. My attackers didn't think to grab it since they were worried that I would grab the diplomacy or warfare cards. This allowed me to pull the Imperium Rex card that ends the game and award the victory to the person with the highest score giving me the win.

Everyone seemed to have a good time and we will be definitely be playing the game again in a few weeks. We will probably add in a few more of the optional rules. Next week we are introducing our new players to Battlestar Galactica.
