One of my friends bought the game Zombies and we played our first game a couple weeks back. It took four of us close to three hours to get through a game. Is this standard or was I just dealing with super slow indecisive players?

So this is what it feels like to get a thorough beating by AstroLad. :lol

I can definitely see why someone would like advanced 2 player. Ah well, still good practice I suppose.

Mind you I have never played it but I've heard of this happening. From what I gather one of the main complaints about the game is it overstays it's welcome. Last Night on Earth seems to be the better zombie game.

Yeah sorry, I shoulda set it to base instead of Gathering Storm but it is a great (free) way to get some exposure to Gathering Storm. Advanced is awesome, probably the best way to play the game although 4+ is growing on me.

Did you play with the standard rules of mixing in the helipad into the tiles, or did you set it aside and put it at the bottom to be last card drawn?

Mixing in the helipad gives you some random results, but yea a game of zombies can go either way to long, or it goes fast.

I personally prefer their other game Medevil as it takes zombie formula and makes it a bit more interesting.

So I finally caved and bought Arkham horror. Coolstuffinc.com was a good find. I didn't feel like spending $100 yet but even the price with shipping was great.

It should be here Friday, just in time for a get together with a couple of friends who I play RftG with. Can't wait to try it out. Going through the rules online now and am going to print out some of the BGG cheat sheets hehe.

Have fun and be sure to set a lot of time aside!

4p rftg on genie is cursed! Ah well don't like my starting hand much anyway so no rush. :p

We mixed the helipad into the tiles, but it still came up last. :lol

I had such a great situation playing RftG tonight that I was unable to use optimally. I ended up getting 7 cards each production phase because of Mining Conglomerate, Lost Species Ark World, and Diversified Economy. Unfortunately I threw away my Deficit Spending card before I realized how many cards I was going to be drawing, so I missed a couple VPs. Still won though, so it wasn't too bad.

Battlestar expansion preorders shipped from thoughthammer.

I have it preordered with CSI :(((

There will be massive shit fits if I can't play this this weekend!

Gah was finally ascending toward 1700 and suffered two super-flukey one-point losses. Can we get together 3-4 for :30?

Just got in Space Hulk preorder from GW. Box is smaller than most FFG big box games but it is heavier! This uses some really nice thick and glossy cardboard which is even slightly textured. Very nice quality product, at least getting something good for the price.
You weren't kidding, holy crap. Weighs like 10+ pounds.

I for some weird reason didn't think this was coming out until October. When I realized CSI had it in stock I ordered it immediately.

I know it has a bit more randomness than a lot of people like, but I love Axis and Allies. My boardgame group played the Anniversary Edition for the first time since January, although only three of us from that time are still active. The good thing is the other three were replaced with more reliable people who seem to enjoy the games we like more.

We played the '42 starting conditions without using National Objectives. I was Germany and on the first turn had some bad rolls and got pushed back by the Soviet player. Luckily, he pushed too far and spread himself so I was able to recover and take his northern production facility. Using my planes I took out several of the British ships including their transport near Europe. Since I also controlled Italy I was able to take out their Mediterranean fleet as well.

I pushed hard on the Soviets for the next few turns using Italian troops to defend Western Europe, and was lucky the British player was focusing on India to help America with Japan. This allowed me to surround Moscow. For some reason the British listened to the Soviet player and moved his planes from protecting London to help defend Moscow. This left only an anti-air, two infantry, and an artillery piece to defend London. I took a gamble attacked with a bomber, fighter, one infantry I had in France, and a naval bombardment with a cruiser. I got lucky and the infantry and bomber survived giving me control of the British Isles. This effectively knocked the British player out of the game and using the resources I got allowed me purchase an insane amount of tanks. The next turn I knocked out Moscow pretty much giving the Axis the games. It was a good thing too since Japan didn't have long. At this point we called it, since even if Japan fell I had such a resource advantage their was no way the American could come back unless he had the luckiest rolls ever.

Aye, mine is on the way along with Chaos in the Old World!

I've always had an eye on Axis and Allies. I'm a little overwhelmed by all the products though and have no idea where to start. There's fucking pacific and European and 1942 and anniversary and Jimmy Dean Sausage edition. It's a bit much. I don't know whats a standalone product and what's not.

I'd also probably ragequit if it were much like Risk.

I do describe it as advanced Risk to people who don't play boardgames at all, but it isn't nearly as bad or random. Combat is determined by dice rolls, but every unit has a different combat value (both offensive and defensive). So while there is randomness, in general a bomber will kill a tank, which will kill infantry, etc.

Heh, while I agree that there are a lot of different versions of the game, for a first time buyer just get the new 1942 edition. This is the new standard version replacing the Revised Edition that came out like 5 years ago. I think CSI has it for like $20. I have the Anniversary edition which is awesome (nice packaging and pieces, plus two versions of the game, '41 and '42), but it is already out of print and sells for like $200.

A&A isn't terrible. I don't like it because it's not a consim (it really tries hard to be a balanced game) , but it has a lot of nice things going for it for the non-wargamer crowd:

a) capacity to handle 5-6 players very well with not a ton of downtime. You can honestly even do simultaneous turns for part of the game in the different theaters.
b) Low unit density keeps analysis paralysis to a minimum, game does keep moving well.
c) Combat resolution is braindead simple. Roll dice, count number of dice below a certain number, take casualties. I think it's an clumsy system but it does let you skip CRTs and DRMs. On the other hand, any time you are dealing with a system with a large number of dice to resolve a single attack like A&A does, you can have exceedingly extreme individual results (that's one of the reasons real wargames often use ratios/step points and CRTs!)
d) Easy to teach and learn. Very simple rules.

Keep in mind though that the game still takes more than a few hours to get through. I think we used to manage 4-5 or so.

A&A is cool, but after you play it a couple times, the game plays out exactly the same way over and over again. Last couple editions they have tried to put in new optional rules to get around this and make for some different results.

Well i noticed that if you have more than 4 players, it seems to take forever. 3 hours is completly insane, i'd say it should take 45 minutes max when we play 4 players

Have you guys played Fortress America? How does that compare?

I at least like the idea. A lot.

It's hilarious. And quite bad. I still have my copy at my parent's place in Florida, though I plan on lugging the huge thing back up with my after Thanksgiving this year so I can subject others to its unique blend of absurdity and hilarious awfulness.

In all seriousness, it's a much more complicated game than A&A, has really weird balance issues, and some occasionally awkward mechanics. That being said, it's basically the board game equivalent of "America, Fuck Yeah!" and that has to count for something.

Yeah the scripting is a big problem with the game. That's why I try to point people, when looking for a lightweight strategic wargame, away from A&A and more towards the card-driven stuff like Here I Stand, Successors, or Twilight Struggle (which IS a wargame!), where you get a more varied sequence of events while also getting all the wonderful historical flavor that CDGs provide.

One more thing about FA-it plays pretty quick, for a game of its sort. Due to the way the game works, the invaders are essentially eliminated soon after their reinforcement waves stop. I never had a FA game go down to the wire-it was either the US getting overwhelmed fast or the invaders getting bogged down, losing their reinforcement waves, and then the rest of the game was the US mopping up.

Just chiming in to say you're not the only one who has picked up Space Hulk. Frankly im still shocked they actually went back and used the superior original edition rules with a couple minor tweaks. I think the models are a bit too busy but unpainted they look alright.

Had my first game of BSG tonight. I was able to talk our sci fi hating roommate into playing and I think we all had a good time. I picked Laura Rosline and ended up a cylon from the jump. Considering she only has politics and leadership going up against Adama and Starbuck my skill check sabotage was limited at first. Once I started to get the hang of things it was easy to pull an engineering card here and there and screw with the skill checks in secret.

I ended up winning by the skin of my teeth. The humans had one tick of fuel left and only two more jumps to Kobal. They were forced to jump to an ice moon losing them their last fuel and the game.

Overall I'm looking forward to playing a full 6 player game of this this weekend. Should be fun.

5+ games are SOOO much better than 3-4.

Agreed. I pretty much only play when we can have 5 people. Actually we had a pretty fun game this weekend (well for the cylons at least). I was Tom Zarek and had the president's title. Through the Quorum I was able to pull two cards that would let me throw people in the brig that I had be holding onto. At the midgame loyalty handout I was given a Cylon card. The next turn I convinced a person to play an executive order on me saying that I could help destroy the Cylon fleet that was on the board. Instead I through two of them in jail which gave the Admiral's title to who I was sure was the other Cylon (and I was right). From there we completely decimated the fleet. Everyone knew we were Cylon's and could do nothing about it but watch since we could beat any attempt to put us in the brig.

We modify the rules a bit--you can move your health+2 and you move 3 zombies per turn. This eliminates two rolls per person per turn.

Thinking about buying Race for the Galaxy. I'm more into games with PIECES (like Last Night on Earth, Tide of Iron), but everyone says how awesome it is. Should I go for it?

Was out at the weekend and saw that the creators of Zombies have a new game out, called Martians. Looks pretty similair to Zombies in layout and execution, but there are a bunch of new tokens etc so if it's different enough i will probably pick it up. With any luck it can be added into Zombies somehow for an epic game :D

IMO, it's a staple to anyone's collection, the lack of components means that it has a lot more mobility than the games you listed which is something that I think is nice.

A good way to find out if it's the game you would like, is to learn the rules by downloading them at Rio Grande's site then play the game on Genie.

Concur on all points. The portability is really overlooked--I've played RftG on planes, in coffee shops, at bookstores, etc. Hard to get that kind of depth and variety in a portable game.

Only thing you have to keep in mind is that there is a modest learning curve--i.e., you'll have to play about five games or so before you get the basics down. It's hardly anywhere near a heavy game, but rather one that really kicks in once you have a handful of games under your belt.

Rules+Genie is a no-brainer if you want to see how you like the mechanics.

RftG is always good.

But look into Puerto Rico.

Its Race for the Caribbean (with pieces).

I saw today that there is a computer (AI) opponent implementation of that game available:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/438698

Not my cup of tea of course, but noticed it and it seemed relevant to the discussion. Between that and a printed set of rules you'd have a really good idea as to if you'd like the game.

I have a couple of the Victory Point solitare wargames around, and can even play a couple of them on a flight. Portability is awesome.

Conflict Simulation games actually work darn well as solitaire games, provided they aren't card-driven games or have other sources of "hidden" information. Since the interest isn't as much winning as it is to see how events could have unfolded had the leaders involved made certain choices or luck gone a slightly different way (see Hannibal at Cannae for a famous example). It's sort of like reading a book, only you're rolling dice and moving counters with a pair of forceps instead of turning pages.

Almost all of the guys in our group (including me) are always playing something solo along with the regular twice weekly game face to face or the PBEM stuff some of us do.

Regarding Victory Point, two games I adore from them:

Soviet Dawn (because I am a dirty communist)

Zulus at the Ramparts (and a dirty imperialist to boot)

Easy to play and great for when I only want to game a half hour or so and don't have anything set up on the table to take a turn with.

All this talk of RftG and Solitaire has got me thinking I'll try out the solitaire variant when I get home.

If I could only get 3-player games consistently would you still recommend BSG?

aphoushole said:

I wouldn't. The whole hidden traitor mechanic is kind of pointless if you have only 2 other people to suspect. 5 is really the minimum for that game.

Is there any tiny microscopic chance that they make a new edition of Warhammer Quest after seeing how much pre-orders they had for Space Hulk?

From one of the reviews:

Unfortunately, the board uses Cyrillic letters to represent Latin letters ('ya' for a capital R, for instance, or 'de' for a capital A) in an attempt to give the game that Russian feel. This annoyed the snot out of me at first, and in fact I had passed on buying the game for quite some time because of it, but eventually it faded into the background.

This could be a deal breaker for me. :P

Anyone got their copy of space hulk yet?! Sqeeeee, mine arrived in the post this afternoon!

UPS was there when I was still held in bed by the dead weight of my sleeping cat. Dropped it off at some of our neighbours, but I can´t fucking read the name and adress. And most are still working :/

Pretty pumped, I never had a chance to play the original or second edition.

Buuut I used the time to test paint a Terminator and it turned out really nice, if I may say so.

Anybody else getting some paint up in this bitch or do you prefer do go in
to the Hulk
raw?

@Shoogoo: Some pretty knowledgeable people basically confirmed similiar limited run boxed games with Warhammer/Heroquest being the next. Probabley a mix between the two, to keep it to one box without expansions. I trust them, but with GW you never know.

No idea how they want to do it, though. They licensed everything boardgame-y but Space Hulk to Fantasy Flight Games.

Heh. Was one of them Alien Toy Shop?

I had a slightly weird one yesterday where I wound up with about half my tableau being 6-devs.
