Best is some simple clippers or small scissors to cut out the figs, then an exacto blad to trip the excess plastic edges.

Yeah, I was thinking of some kind of hobby knife. I just fear that some of the plastic on the figure may be ripped or deformed because of my terrible "use needle nose pliers and twist" method.

From the pics it already looks like it since you can see the white stress marks on the plastic. You might be able to fix some of it with little super glue you gotta be careful. If you were planning on painting them then it's not as big of problem since it will be covered in paint.

Yeah, I was thinking about painting them. I have never painted anything in my life so it might end up as badly as putting them together did. There was a nice tutorial on BGG that basically was doing some quick dry brushing to add highlight, adding a few details then dipping it in some kind of finish. Tutorial says it should only take about 15 minutes per figure to do. Have any tips? Is there a brand of paint i should be using?

Nabbed one at The War Store. When initially asked if they had any, the guy replied "yeah, but it's slim pickings!" I suppose if you're thinking of this at all you should act now. I reason that even if I don't like it, I could sell it for at least what I paid for it.

Acrylic paints. But before you do anything with the figs, they must be primed or the paint will simply flake off. Get a can of hobby primer if you can and coat the whole figs, then you paint the figs with pretty much any type of Acrylic paint you can get ahold of.

Are they giving out discounts on space hulk or full price? Generally they give 20% off all GW products but was thinking they might not for the limited nature of this.

As is my custom when I've got some time to kill, I've been browsing BGG. This time, in particular, I went to see if there was any info about the next Dominion expansion. Not much, but a little tidbit:

The next expansion is focused on a "next turn" mechanic of some sort. It comes with some sort of components that make this easier to deal with. Presumably this means there will be cards that allow you to have extra actions/buys/whatever, but not until your next turn?

I hope that doesn't mean markers or do-dads or something that sit on the table.

"With 260 new action cards and 50 stamped metal coins"

And the dsigner adds

And in fact another set of components isn't mentioned. Again though I wouldn't get excited about that stuff; really you are getting 26 new cards, and the extra stuff is just to handle some of the cards.

Hmm. Not sure how I feel about that. I guess that fiddly stuff is expected in the third expansion nowadays. Not entirely sure how much it helped Race For the Galaxy.

The Dominion crew has earned the benefit of the doubt from me for now.

Had a message at when I got home that On the Brink was in!!! Then I got a second message that said ignore the first message because they cant sell it till tomorrow.

Space Hulk is pretty intimidating. I have some clippers in hand and have no idea where to start.

Just clip away from the figs where the sprue meets the figure. Don't try to be precise with clippers and cut off all the sprue, you will have no matter what some sprue still stuck on your figure.

After you clip out your figs you take an exacto knife/blade and carefully trim off the excess sprue from figs. The figs themselves go together easily without glue and are pretty sturdy.

If you wish to try painting the figs though at some point you might want to just use glue so they stick together and don't damage the paint job later down the line.

Thanks, I've been gathering up all my material and I'm about to sit down and attempt to tackle this. Got some modeling cement to glue them up. Picked up some GW paints (just a couple, christ those are expensive), and some Minwax dip. Hoping to avert disaster.

If you got a Micheals, Joans, or other type of craft store near you, you can get a large bottle of Acrylic paint for like 99 cents. Stuff works great and you get like 10 times the paint as those little gw pots. GW paint is just marked up acrylic paint.

Just make sure you primer your figures before painting, otherwise it wont stick well and will likely crack and flake off with time.

Got all the Terminators assembled, got about 4 stealers in before I said fuck it and just clipped them out of sprues. They'll have to be trimmed and assembled tomorrow.

Never. Again.

Edit: Whats a good household tool I can use to file the bottoms of the bases?

Also, do any of you guys' Terminators love to lean way forward?

I bought Twilight Imperium tonight- foolishly, I might add, since I had to buy a $150 trolley pass for school the same day. I hope it's good enough to justify my idiocy.

So we played Dominion on the weekend for the first time. The first game was a bit confusing but after that... We played several rounds and every round was completely different. Excellent game!!

Amazon just sent word that Chaos in the old world has shipped t my humble abode. Can't wait to spread some corruption as Chaos entity.

What's the GAF up/down on this? I know BGG seems to be pretty happy with it.

I think I'm the only one (who's mentioned at least) that has it.

It's guuuuud.

saw some guy on the train last week with a box called Space Hulk - reminded me of you guys

turns out you guys are already on top of it

EDIT: JESUS CHRIST 100 BUCKS OH GOD IT LOOKS SO AWESOME THOUGH FUCK ME

Yeah, Space Hulk is a tad bit pricey. Too rich for me, that's for sure. :´(

Whatever.
My CitOW box is already here! Yay! Thank you, german postal service.

What I do not like so far:

1) The box has a ridiculously tiny compartement in the middle. No hope of ever keeping all your tokens, cards, dice, and figurines in there. What the hell. I solved this by inverting the cardboard inlay, so that I now have two big compartements and a small ridge inbetween, but that means the game board is only held in place loosely. They also don't include any re-usable bags, so your stuff is flying around loosely unless you have some ziploc bags or something. Not much thought must've gone into this. :(

2) My Tokens were seriously hard to break out of the "mold". They left rather strong connections to the surrounding cardboard, and now my Tokens all have quite big ridges. I'll live, and the tokens weren't damaged, but still... minor quibble, though.

3) The "hand"cards are seriously tiny. Like, 6x4 cm. Not good for big-pawed guys like me, I'd wager.

4) Some figurines have thin parts that bend easily. E.g.: The Cultists figures feature some sort of staff inbetween two robed figures, with a decorative thingamajing at the end, and about all of my figurines have that decorative ring hanging over them like some sort of broken halo. It's kind of a sorry sight. The plastic is very malleable, so it's not permanent, but OTOH I doubt they'll stay unbent when they sit in the box in between gameplay sessions. One sharp look, and they bend again.

5) Why are the character cards not made out of thick cardboard? These wishy-washy sheets are a bit of a letdown. I'm supposed to have them in front of me at all times, but I think they're a bit too feeble to withstand some serious gaming with heavy token shuffling. They look more like cheatsheets, which is a shame.

6) The dice are really cheap stuff. One of mine even has a small manufacturing fault (small nick at one side, and a white impurity on the other). I'm not impressed at all.

The things I do like:

1) The game board is friggen HUGE. It's more than 80 cm in one dimension! The dials are nice, and the board is folded in a way that keeps them on the outside so that they can't damage the lovely artwork. Niiiiice.

2) The manual is full colour and sports many nicely layouted pages. It seems to be very feature-complete and even sports a glossary with explanations and stuff. Wow.

3) Artwork is awesome. 'nuff said. Very atmospheric.

Keep in mind I haven't played the game yet. TBQH, I've just come down from the new game fumes induced happy dance.
Eating charred pizza and looking forward to tomorrow, maybe I'll get to play the game then. Now, back to dancing and squealing like a little girl. Wheeeeeeeee! :D

That's the new one by Eric Lang, right?

Yes.

A lot of your complaints are pretty par for the course in boardgaming. Chit punching, small cards, shitty inserts.

I'm a pretty anal on keeping things like-new as possible for as long as possible. here's what I do:

As for your bent figures, it's an easy fix. Get a small pot of water, a bowl of ice water, and some tongs. Heat the water to just below boiling (little water bubbles all over the bottom/sides is good. Grab bent figure in tongs, dip in hot water. Voila, instant straightness. Dip into ice water to set the figure again. Then go to your local sporting goods store and get some small Plano (fishing tackle section) boxes to store and prevent more bends. Cards go in snack sized ziplock bags on the sides of the plano. I just removed the insert and the board rests on top of the Plano box. Character sheets stay nice & straight stored in the folded up board.

Also note: The Slaanesh Character card has a typo -- He needs *2* corruption to advance his dial, not 1. Confirmed via FAQ & Errata

Look at it like this: It's a limited and already hard to find. You can recoup the losses easily very soon when the shelves go bare! :)

Just as an update: my wife enjoyed Lost Cities (she rated it an 8/10), and we've established a weekly game night for the two of us :D

For the next few weeks we'll probably play a few games of Lost Cities a night and then go back to our standard (Trivial Pursuit) because

1) I don't want to push her too hard too fast

and

2) Board Games are expensive.

Any other drop-dead-simple suggestions for what to get next? I'm thinking either Bohanza or Dominion, but I'm worried about how both play with 2 people...

Trivial Pursuit is soooooooooooooooooo bad though. And I'm a huge trivia-game fan.

My recommendation for you guys: Battle Line. The rest of these dudes will back me up on that one.

YDKJ! (Smarty Pants on Wii is also pretty solid while I'm at it.)

For 4 or more Wits & Wagers is also quite fun and snappy.

Thiiiiiiis. Also Say Anything! Its not tecnically Trivia perse, but it doesn't require any skill other than imagination and snappy response. You'll laugh so hard it hurts. Promise.

Yeah, Wits and Wagers is the only trivia game I really willingly play anymore.

Congrats on getting the wife into board gaming though, that's a major victory!

(I still stand by my Catan Card Game recommendation, too)

Dominion works with 2 players. It's not AS awesome as with 3 or 4, but it's still really fun.

I love Bohnanza, but haven't played with 2, and kind of share your worries about it. One of the chief mechanics in the game involves trading cards, and just the specific way it works in the game, having less trade options could be really frustrating.

Dominion is great fun. It doesn't have much direct confrontation which is something my wife appreciates.

I highly recommend Crokinole, but it is quite spendy to get a board. Crokinole is a dexterity game which is simple to play but requires skill and strategy to master.

If you want to delve into a more complex game Agricola plays well with two. I also like Caylus and the classic Puerto Rico (using the official 2 player variant). My wife and I play all of these, Puerto Rico being our longstanding favorite.

We played it last night (3-player) and it feels complicated to set up, but once you get going it runs pretty well. It seems to be a little lop-sided though; it is easier to win by turning the event dial to reach "victory" compared to earning the necessary victory points.

The spouse doesn't think it was that great of a game, but I would be willing to play it again.

Chaos in the Old World is great as I mentioned before. The only major problem I had with it is that it's impossible to not have the cultist chaos icons eventually break on you. Had a couple come broken in the bag already and it's to small and rubbery to glue back on.

Game plays really fast with simple combat and the chaos powers are all very fluffy. Highly recommend.

Painting the first 5 Space Hulk figs is pretty tedious. That being said, they're looking pretty damned good so far IMO. I'll post a picture when I get home.

Imagine some of us who have armies of war hammer figs we hand painted with close to 300 dudes. :(

I enjoy it, and I hate it at the same time. It's a major pain but it's very rewarding experience when your done and it came out well.

Boltgun & Gold added. I see I need to do a few touchups.

I could live with all of my negative first impressions so far, but the storage issue really gets on my nerves. How could they evidently spend great amounts of time and effort designing an awesome game and then miss something so obvious?

Oh well. Will look into those box things. Sounds neat.

(Aaaaagh not enough properly motivated friends came over yesterday. No CitOW for me for the next week or so. :´( )

Not bad, though it seems you didn't prime the mini before hand so be gentle with the figs, as the paint is going to come off the figs very easily. Best to get some foam trays or such to store the figs outside the game box as the figs painted wont last long just tossed inside.

Not bad, but you should've primed it before painting. You should've also used less wash. It's pooled up too much on some of the flat surfaces.

That reminds me, I need to start painting my own Terminators and Genestealers.

Scored Space Hulk off ebay. Damn, never thought I would pay this much for a board game, but considering it wasn't much more than 2 xbox games I'll play for a month and forget, this should last for a few decades with proper care.

Never painted any minis either (well, at least not since the mid 80s anyway) so I need to get set up. Probably practice on some cheap minis, maybe my Runebound or Last Night on Earth figures before tacking those intricate Terminators.

I'm in the camp who thinks Space Hulk WILL get re-issued again, but I think it will have fewer unique figures and still retail for $80-100, so I sucked it up and dropped some cash for the anniversary edition. The way it sold out like that MUST convince GW to keep making it in some fashion.
