For some reason I thought you were from Boston. :lol Going by NYC Boston is probably like 35-50 in Smarch.

Honestly if you are looking for sneaky hot deals you're probably best off asking in the Pax East thread. I'm the absolute worst person to give guidance on getting deals, as I usually just go with whatever's easiest without thinking twice. Last time I stayed in Boston I paid ~$250/night but that was at a rather nice place, so I'm sure you can find lower if you're willing to look around.
 
I'm at the Colonnade Boston. Pricey but close.

We've found that at PAX and GenCon having a good hotel with generous public space can be a real boon. Did lots of lobby gaming in Seattle. At GenCon we convinced the staff of our hotel to open un-reserved meeting rooms for gaming. Nice for after-hours, late night gaming.
 
Might be overly ambitious but we should try to hook up a game of AH+Dunwich at Pax. Been waaaay too long since I played AH.

Sounds good to me; I know Pax goes til like 2 or something right?

Since I'm stuck at the airport, some games I'd propose bringing. We'll be driving down from NYC so we can pretty much bring as much as we want (unlike flying when it's a bitch to lug them around and they get dinged in transit)
-AH+Dunwich (good with 3-5)
-Dominion+Intrigue+Seaside
-RftG Complete (3-5) (must play)
-TtR+1910 (3-4)
-RoboRally (possibly Complete, possibly AH version) (must play)
-Formula D (5-8)
-Galaxy Trucker+Big Expansion (3-5) (must play)
-LNOE+Growing Hunger (4-6)
-PitchCar w/ Extensions (5-8) (fun as hell w/ big groups but heavy and wonder if we'll have the room, it needs a big table)

Be happy to learn some new games too.

ps I know I am jinxing the hell out of this too but oh well.

Wow. It'll be rad to have access to all of those. Air travel with board games can be a hassle. I once dragged Agricola to Vegas. It took up half of my rollerboard.

So good. I'm definitely a physical-board-game fetishist but even I have to admit Genie has spoiled me. Much as I love RftG's goofy art, it can be a bit of a chore to set up, especially when you have both expansions in there (pulling out the start worlds, picking, putting them back, shuffling that huge deck, fiddling with the VPs).
 
Local nerd dungeon had a 25% off sale on board games. There wasn't much in stock that we didn't already have so we did a little impulse buying.

Girlfriend got Cardcassone on the grounds that we had a decent time with Ticket to Ride the Card Game and so maybe it wouldn't suck. I picked up "Kill Dr. Lucky" which appears to be some sort of bizarro-Clue. I think I mainly bought it because I chuckled at the fact that it had an expansion called "... and his little dog, too". Both have pretty mediocre BGG ratings, though.

Anyone played either? Obviously we've already bought them, but I still love reading play impressions.
 
I'll be going to PAX East with my wife and a friend. We'll be staying at the Lenox. We're all pretty much still into gateway games, but I'd love to try and learn some new stuff while at PAX.

cool, when it comes closer to pax time we should make sure to organize our gaf boardgaming subgroup. right now i know we've got flynn, neverfade, and me+wife. as indicated above i'm going to bring a whole range of games that play well 2-7. i doubt we'll be playing anything super hardcore in any event, most of the games in my list are mediumweight at most

"Kill Dr Lucky" was the first of the cheapass games, which I played a few times when it first came out (about ten years ago). It's okay - very odd sort of game, which is much, much better with a lot of players. There's no real strategy or tactics - just draw cards, and see what happens.

It's a nice idea for a game, mind

Just got Pandemic:On the Brink today. Definitely rounds out the main game. I got it mainly because the wife would rather play the bio-terrorist. Hope to get some plays in this weekend.

Ordered "Fields of Fire" a solitaire WW2/Korea/Vietnam war card game. I need some single player games for when I have to sit around and help the wife with her college math homework :)

Heading back to NYC next month, gonna swing by The Compleat Strategist, love that store! I can only hope they have some OOP games I've been looking for, like Merchants of Venus, Wooden Ships and Iron Men, or Fire and Axe.

For the A&A question, if you have the original, check out the 1940:Pacific one. MUCH larger map, many more units, should scratch the itch if you want a deeper A&A game. I think 1942 is basically a reprint, not even using the 50th anniversary rules.

Unlike what the other poster said, it does use the 50th anniversary rules.

Other than the rule differences, it's just a remake of the base game.

Some negatives: the game comes with no money (the rules say keep track of money using pen and paper) and a lot of people complain about the board being smaller, making it harder to fit all the pieces, or tell what's where at times.

The figures, however are supposed to be the same as the 50th anniversary ones, which are supposedly improvements.

So, for like 25-30 bucks, I don't think it's a horrible deal, but i wouldn't pay any more than that.
 
I'll be at PAX East as well. I am staying at the Sheraton, but unfortunately I doubt I will be able join anyone for games. I am going with a group of friends who aren't into boardgames and I doubt they will let me run off.

As far as games go, I have been mainly playing some shorter stuff recently. I think playing so much Starcraft, Axis & Allies: Anniversary Edition, and Twilight Imperium burned people out of long games. We have mainly been hitting up a lot of Settlers of Catan and its various expansions. Some Ticket to Ride with the 1910 expansion, and a bunch of Citadels. I absolutely love Citadels, so I am glad for all of the people who talked that game up in this thread.

Last weekend I also played Munchkin Quest for the first time. As a warning, I have no experience with the card game versions of Munchkin. While the humor is pretty great, I found the game itself seemed pretty average. I felt it was because it was never really intended to be a boardgame. Setting up new rooms and connectors while the game went on took more time then it should and by the end you were just glad it was finished. It also didn't help that I never had a chance to read the instructions beforehand, and the person who owned the game isn't always the best at understanding and explaining the rules. One of my other friends is going to be getting the original card game soon so I am hoping that will be better.

Also next week I will be playing Puerto Rico for the first time. I am definitely looking forward to that.

We are also about to put together a group order from Coolstuffinc.com to give us a collection of games to play for the next few months.

My part of the collection includes:

Race for the Galaxy
Race for the Galaxy: The Gathering Storm (or should I go with a different expansion?)
Dominion
Last Night on Earth: Survival of the Fittest

I am also debating on picking up Through the Ages, Conflict of Heroes: Awakening the Bear!, or Cosmic Encounters. I am leaning toward Through the Ages, but I am still considering Conflict since I have been wanting to get a bit more into wargaming and I believe it was Frag who has stated it is a good entry game.

One of my other friends is picking up Robo Rally, which I am also looking forward to trying out.

Sounds like it's worth it to buy, then combine the best of the new and original to one uberset.

Yeah, I can't believe they actually got rid of the money. I realize they are trying to cut costs so the game isn't as expensive as some of the previous versions, but that is going a bit far. Also, if the pieces are the same as the Anniversary edition, I will say you might find some of the ships to be annoying. It can be hard telling the destroyers, cruisers, and battleships apart and until you really get used to them.

It does, as the bio-terrorist plays against the others. The hidden movement rules and whatnot remind me a lot of Fury of Dracula (which is also excellent).

So, I just ordered Dominion and Power Grid.

ConfusingJazz suggested I check out Diplomacy, but it looks like it might take a while to play. Any thought on how long a 4-6 person game would take?

Also, I can be a raging asshole while I play games. How likely is a fight to ensue?

You can make house rules. like 10 mins between turns and what not to speed up the game. But takes some time. Because you need to talk and plot..

If you can use one, I find a large hourglass that can go 10 to 15 minutes adds a nice touch for this. But a digital timer's fine too, especially if you can do a shot-clock style buzzer when it's about to run out.

How do you feel about being mercilessly stabbed in the back by someone, possibly a good friend who has been your ally the entire game, that lied to your face approximately 5 minutes ago?

Yeah, my friends' attention span is way too short for that sadly.

It's 25 bucks so I may go ahead and pull the trigger on it anyway and see if it works out. They typically trust me as the weird board games I have made them play have all been fun (except for a very bad World of Warcraft board game incident that I think I posted in this thread a while ago)

I am the sort of person who is more likely to be fucking everyone over to get ahead. This is what I do in Monopoly and Risk whenever I play. I make fucking side deals and stab people in the back like mad.. to the point that no reasonable person would trust me. But I usually find a way where they have no choice but to let me win.

My mother stopped talking to me for a while over something that happened in Catan about 6 months ago.

I enjoy making people hurt their own interest in board games by convincing them doing something stupid is the only smart thing to do. Like I said, I'm a raging asshole

I would love to see the first game when every sees that they can team up on you and boot you so quickly..:lol

Yeah, the BT moves between the other players, seeding the purple disease behind him. He is invisible except under certain circumstances, can be locked up, but will quickly escape. Seems like he is just a hindrance on the other players, as his victory condition is to just be alive at the end of the game. Does allow Pandemic to be a 2 player versus game though, which I will probably demo against the wife this weekend.

Thanks for the info on A&A. I've been debating a purchase just for nostaligas sake, and I think the Pacific/Europe combo will do it. I remember it soo fondly from my youth, but the though of those massive German/Russian tank battles to a stand still, turn after turn, fills me with dread these days :P

We did during a game of Bang once...the poor guy barely lasted a turn before he died, and didn't even get to play since we threw him in jail. :lol

But it was his birthday and it's tradition, so he was good-natured about it.
 
I also recommend Lunch Money. Quick game, and is a fun simulation of a schoolyard brawl between two girls.

Just don't play with a hot head. You know, that guy that takes things a little too seriously, and makes you uncomfortable to drink with. Yeah, he might stab you.

Try Citadels then. It's light and quick but a lot of fun and has a lot of backstabbing depth. Every turn is basically screwing people over. Noticed you ordered Power Grid too, I'm sure you know but it's pretty long and heavy thatswhatshesaid. Dominion sounds like a good fit though. Let me also toss out a recommendation for RoboRally, race game that's quick to learn and involves lots of shooting and pushing your friends into pits.
