Had several hours of gaming over the past few days. We probably played about four hours of Kingsburg, our last game using all the expansion parts (the expansion gives you several different new mechanics to incorporate as you wish a la Galaxy Trucker Big). Won't get into the nitty-gritty since I don't think anyone else here plays Kingsburg but we really love it. Has grown on us in the past month or so and it's our hot game of the moment.

Also busted out some Nordic Countries tonight (been a long time since I've played any TTR, and about a year since I last played Nordic Countries). Just a great game for 3p; there is always conflict and it always happens really quickly. I'm not even the hugest TTR fan anymore except for gateway situations, but Nordic Countries plays really well even with pros.

Finally got to play Galaxy Trucker with 3 players today. 2-player doesn't do it justice - if you need to play with 2 people at least take out a handful or two pieces to make it interesting. I think it would be even better with 4 people.

Really a great game, but if you play with people of varying levels of engineering/puzzle sense, it can take awhile before the skill levels balance out.
Yep, agree on all these points. With 4 it's awesome, with 3 it's great, with 2 it's a pass imo.

So does everyone play Rftg with the takeover rules on or off? We tried using them several times and in 3 games no one ever had the cards or were capable of performing it. It seems like a whole bunch of stuff and rules for a mechanic that rarely comes into play.
I play with them on in the Keldon AI version b/c the computer takes care of everything. But otherwise off. It's just a pain. I was so skeptical of the mechanic when I saw in the rules they recommended alternating and doing the first game of each play session with takeovers off. Tough to teach too. From Keldon I actually like the mechanic but to me it's not worth all the extra fiddling on tabletop.

Mystery Express' play time picks up dramatically when ever you get used to the different choices. Even then my first game only took an hour and a half. I'm surprised it dragged so much for you.
That is definitely a knock on the game is how slow it plays the first several games. My only experience is from playing it at PAX, not the greatest game in the world imo but like Stump said it's a great upgrade from Clue, and a lot of people are really into Clue so that's cool.

Ended up playing an entirely different set of games on Sunday than planned.

We got in some Uno (my girlfriend has apparently had a change of heart and now enjoys it)--which was fun as always but the people we were playing with don't allow bluffing on Wild Draw 4 cards and that's basically the most fun part of Uno.

Also played some, :lol, Detroit-Cleveland Grand Prix. I think the last time I played that game, I was about 13. It's a family-friendly racing card/board game.

Basically there are six racecars. You bid in an auction style to own one or two of those racecars. You have a hand with a dozen+ cards, each of which moves particular cars in a particular way (some cards move every car one or more spaces, some cards just move one car, some cars move two cars).

The racetrack is mostly made of pretty wide segments, but there are some narrow chicanes and you can create bottlenecks. This is what differentiates it from most of the racing games people play (Daytona 500, Top Race). For example, if the road is only one car wide and a black car is blocking off the road, other cars can't pass and any cards played for those other cars are wasted cards. This allows the black player to burn off cards that would otherwise help his opponents. The cool thing about the game, which I totally forgot, was that it comes with two tracks, so if you're bored of Cleveland, you just flip the board over and you've got Detroit.

The mechanics are cool, but the auction format probably has a little too much power. It's too easy to vindictively jack up the price of cars. In one round, one of our players had an excellent black-only hand and was made to pay $150,000 for the black car. Since you win $200,000 for first place, $150,000 for second place, and lesser amounts on down the podium, she basically had virtually no chance of profiting from the race. Instead of doing an auction, maybe a blind/silent bid system would be better?

Well we didn't start until 11PM, none of us had played before, and one of our players is not a quick study of any board game, so I think those factors combined to make it much much longer than it had to be.

The more I think about, the more two things become obvious to me. 1) The "Time" cards are basically a non-gamer gimmick and don't really add much to the game. 2) The ability to make any player pick up their entire discard pile is very useful even though at first it seems not at all intuitive.

I'll be playing again this week. I like deduction games, it's Days of Wonder so the production quality is really nice and I like the train / European themes.

Hello all.

This is my first post on NeoGaf. I've been lurking for a long time and finding this thread is what finally pushed me to create an account.

It's only been the past year or so that I've been bitten by the boardgame bug, and it was a vicious bite. I've seen my budding collection grow to roughly 30 titles since first playing Settlers of Catan with my wife and daughter.

I'm a scifi buff so if a space theme is slapped on I'm probably going to give it a try.

Oddly though my current favorite game is not scifi related. It is Twilight Struggle, and thanks to a friend who lives close by who enjoys playing it as much as I do, I've had plenty of opportunity to play it since getting it a few months back.

I'm a huge fan of Race for the Galaxy, and AstroLad, I've actually played a game with you on the Game Genie server (it was during our game you recommended Battle Lines, which I promptly bought and loved...thanks for that!). I think I've racked up almost 230 games online. I've recently found a local game group that I've been playing with, and Race is one of the current faves, so I have been enjoying the dynamic of actually having the cards in my hands as I play.

Another game I bought recently and am fond of (though I've only had one "live" play) is Galactic Emperor. It's sort of a mix of Twilight Imperium and Puerto Rico, which to me can't really be a bad thing.

Aside from that I have been digging wargames (again, thanks to my friend). I have the first Memoir 44 (really like it), TS (already mentioned), Conflict of Heroes: Attack of the Bear (only played through the first scenario, so far liking it), and Washington's War (played a few games, like it but it's not grabbing us like TS).

Oh, and with the family we've been playing Stone Age (really like it), Galaxy Trucker w/expansion (really like it), and lately some Power Grid (really like it).

I think that's enough wall of text. Looking forward to (hopefully) contributing more!

:lol that sounds pretty much exactly like our group. Love all those games (except Washington's War and Galactic Emperor, which I haven't played).

TS really is great. I'd play it even more if it wasn't a minor chore to set up (vs. our other favorite 2P games like Battle Line, San Juan, Lost Cities, etc. which take <2m of setup time). Do you have the new edition of that with the backed board? I have the 2nd ed.

Been playing some Arkham Horror last weekend, stays an awesome game. Anyone got recommendations wich expansions are worth it and wich are not, thanks :)

Best expansions are Dunwich Horror (big box) and Curse of the Dark Pharaoh (small box). Haven't played Innsmouth yet though. Dunwich is great -- lots of new content and mechanics and it's perfect for once the base game has gotten too easy for your group.

edit: actually i meant kiy, though curse is a good second choice.

edit2: as far as big box, dunwich is loads better than kingsport. kingsport is probably the worst of all the expansions if you're looking for bix box. innsmouth mechanics seem cool to me so maybe i'll try it out next week. dunwich at this point almost reminds me of gathering storm for rftg, like it more completes the base game and feels essential.

The King in Yellow doesn't add any new landmass or anything, but it adds a TON of really really awesome cards. I would highly recommend it.

I didn't particularly like Dunwich Horror when I played it. Everyone else does, but I found that the extra board didn't add much.

I think we're going to get along just fine :-D

Played some Stone Age with my parents when they were in town for the weekend. I won, kinda killed everyone (wife was close, actually). My mom really enjoyed the game though, and probably would have played another round if we had time. Dad seemed less enthused, but we kept him up a bit best his bedtime to play :lol

I have the newest deluxe edition.

And setup is pretty easy now because, (a) we have played a couple dozen times and have a system down, and (b) my friend bought 2 of those daily pill minder dispensers (one red and one blue for matching superpowers) which we've used to break down the counters by number, so it's easy to grab 1s, 2s, etc.

I have Lost Cities and San Juan as well, but we haven't played those in a while. I had bought San Juan to get my family to play Race, but they simply don't have the motivation to make the jump. Sad really, as it's so quick and fun to play. At the game group the other night we played 3 games total in probably a little over an hour.

Thanks for the tips, i've been looking at those mini expansions lately, will try those first. Maybe ill get the Dunwich if i can find a good deal.

The ones my friend found are perfect. They have 14 compartments (2 weeks) and they easily fit all the counters, event chits, each superpower die, and the chits for the board. The way we handle it now, whatever superpower won gets the shared chits for the board. This way if we don't play for a week or two we know which power won last time.

It's also great the way the deluxe board has all the starting influence printed right on the map. Makes setup that much easier.

Played a nice meaty game of Gric tonight (K&Z decks, 3 players) as well as Dominion (Base+Promos+Seaside+Intrigue).

One thing about Alchemy just superficially is that I wish Potions cost one more or something and give you a +Buy or that there was a separate Potion Buy phase or something. I'm sure it has been playtested to death and any modification would make it a kajillion times worse yadda yadda but there is nothing more annoying than just having a worthless potion in your hand, especially late game. Shit is worse than a Copper. There are also lots of cool cheap Alchemy cards but why are you going to use your only Buy on a one-potion card when you can use it on a Silver or better. Alchemy has fallen out of our Dominion rotation after three or four meh games of it but I'm sure I'll work it back in once Dominion KD gets updates and allows you to regulate the number of cards from each set, costs, etc.

Customizing storage for your boardgame bits for optimal setup/play is always a fantastic idea.

The Container Store is your friend!

Anyone play Bang! with less than 7 people? I've heard the game really needs to be played with 6-7 people to get most enjoyment from it but I can usually get like 4-5 players normally for game nights.

The extra board is nice because it generally demands that someone hustle up there and police that area to prevent the Horror from showing up, and this either makes the game more challenging or helps give a player something to do, depending on how many folks you have in the game. It also provides new areas to explore, which is always nice. However, the real benefit to Dunwich is in the pile of new characters, new GOOs, and the madness/injury cards, all of which help shake up the regular game very nicely.

AstroLad, if you're a fan of Dunwich you'll probably appreciate the amount of stuff that Innsmouth comes with. In addition to the new investigators and GOOs, and other tidbits (and, of course, the board itself), the personal story mechanic is very nice and gives the players something else to occupy them as they frantically run around town trying to prevent the coming of the eldritch horror du jour.

It plays fine with 5, games go a lot faster obviously. 5 setup is 1 Sheriff, 1 Deputy, 1 Renegade, 2 Outlaws.

Nice elaboration, now i definatly have to get it :lol

Yeah expect prestige leader to win most of the time early on with BoW...because it's a powerful mechanic that makes a big change to the game, so obviously those who exploit it most effectively will win until the other players learn they actually need to pay attention to enemy tableaus and they need to be prepared to prevent opponents from running away with Prestige Leader.

One of my favorite things about Race for the Galaxy is the learning curve - you constantly feel like you're increasing your skill with every game. Prestige lengthens that curve substantially, and I think that's why I'm so nuts about it. It's really well implemented.

Got a couple good games of Dominion in with some new players this weekend.

They made fun of it at first ":lol, are we playing magic or some shit"

Then we wound up playing 5 more games :lol

It gets them all!

Carson City
Infinite City
Fresco.

It was pretty hard not to add Horus Heresy.
I had the chance to play Fresco a few weeks back. I liked it. I threw it on my wish list, but it will probably be a while before I pull the trigger.

If I had reason to believe my family would play it at least somewhat frequently I would snag it sooner.

Sorry I've been MIA for so long everybody. Hope everybody who wanted to go to BGG got their tickets -- they're sold out I hear.

I found a group of gamers up here in Apple Valley -- there are a couple of solid, mellow gamer types and a couple off kooks, but I'm willing to make due.

I think I'm going to go to the three-day board game thing in Los Angeles come Labor Day -- apparently Thomas Lehman is going to attend and there will be RFTG events. Should be fun.

Anybody play anything new-ish that they like? I finally got a round of Stone Age in and really dug it.

Welcome back Flynn!

Yuuuuup. Got tickets and room for my wife and I and two friends are actually coming along too. So looking forward to this, it's just a bummer it's not until November. Got Gen Con tickets for the wife and I too. Probably going to miss E3 this year though (not that that's realy a boardgaming mecca, or even a boardgaming newark for that matter).

Been playing tons of Kingsburg+Expansion. Great light worker-placement dicefest. Played a couple of games with Farmers of the Moor too. We alternate between base and that depending on how we feel about horsies on a given night.

Cool, Roll through the Ages is available on iPhone now: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/roll-through-the-ages/id374165408?mt=8&ign-mpt=uo=6 Never played it before, but gonna try it out; app reviews seem quite good.
I just downloaded this and played a few rounds. The game is pretty fun. Like most dice games it plays like a Yahtzee variant but with more choices and more things to do. I haven't played the physical board game yet so I'm not sure how it stacks up to that. I imagine it's fairly faithful to the board game.

The app itself is serviceable but the interface is straight ass, it needs a little bit more polish. The app also needs a tutorial badly. It's not too difficult to get but being new to the game and poor menus I was completely lost through the first couple games I played.

Completely agree on the tutorial. I know it's just a matter of the cost of creating an interactive or at least animated tutorial but imo it's hugely important to these board games if they want the audience to be any broader.

Nice! Looking forward to seeing you at BGG. You'll get to meet my whole Minnesota contingent -- three or four serious, friendly and wickedly smart boardgamers.

I think you'll dig Gencon too, sorry I won't be making it this year.

I hate to cost everybody another five bucks, but that Carcassonne for iPhone, iPad just came out too.

ok, getting ready for a long week of vacation, and have some games packed, but plan on getting more.

just got Race for the Galaxy, along with Gathering Storm for solo play. Plan on getting ideology either tonight or tomorrow.

question: I want to get a zombie-type game, and trying to decide between LNoE, Zombies!, and Martians!. there will be 3-5 adults (myself as the only gamer), and 2-6 children, youngest will be 7. I want to get LNoE, but dont know if that is too heavy for the kids or not. Opposite with Zombies/Martians--probably good for the kids, but lame for the adults.

which one would be better for all to play?

Games we are taking:
RftG/GS
Ticket to Ride
Pandemic
Campaign Manager 08
many card games (Fluxx, bang!, and a few more)

thanks, gaf.

Depends how many you're playing with, what types of themes and mechanics they're into, and what level of complexity they're comfortable with.

Some other popular gateway games are Ticket to Ride and San Juan. For a bit more complexity, something like Stone Age.
StoOgE said:
I would check out Ticket to Ride, Small World or Dominion next.

Carcassonne is a good game, and the rules are extremely simple but I think the scoring and strategy are much harder to grasp initially than some of the other gateway games. The problem is most people like to have a "task" they are trying to complete in a game and Carca is all about thinking on your feat and winging it based on what tile you pick up. It's a great game and it is pretty cheap, so you should get it.. I just don't think it is the best "2nd" game to own.
Okay so Ticket to Ride seems good.
Robo Rally looks appealing too.
Cara is cheap enough that I'll probably just snag it on a random trip to the comic shop.

For the record, my group LOVES playing fireball island with too many people (6 to 8 people playing fireball island is really just an endurance run that encourages screaming and sweating amongst friends)
apples to apples, loaded questions and such, but I think most are ready to move on to a some games with a bit more depth.

Mind you I've only played LNoE but I've heard bad things about Zombies!. From what I understand it can be a chore to play. LNoE is actually fairly easy to play. Since it is semi-cooperative you can help people on your team if they get stuck. LNoE is super themeatic and with the right group people really get into it. I've introduced this game to alot of nongamers and it's been a hit. My mother even likes it.

Just pulled the trigger and bought a copy of the Collector's Edition for War of the Ring since FFG had it briefly back in stock (I spent like 5 minutes debating while it was sitting in my cart). Most I ever spent on a single boardgame.

Thanks for that. I know that Z! has a few things wrong, and i think that Martians was the same, but that Humans changed it for the better. I can get Martians now, or drive 30 min to get Humans, which I dont plan on doing. :p Thus, my question on the experience of Gaf with these. :D

Looks like i will pick up LNoE, along with Ideology tonight.

Thanks alot for the help, Joey.

Welcome to the club! I don't get to play it often, but I don't regret the purchase. Everything about this game is beautiful. Buy a bigger table now.

Last night I had the chance to play both Cosmic Encounter and Galaxy Trucker (with expansion). I love CE and wish I had the chance to play it more. I had brought it to the gaming group I've been playing with a few times but we never got it to the table. Last night we did and I think it went well. I hope it makes it into at least a semi-regular rotation.

Of the new games that came in, I only got to try Infinite City last night, but it was good fun.

It's a tile laying game where you don't have to worry about matching up sides ala Carcassonne. Play a tile adjacent to any other tile. Put one of your tokens on it. Follow the ability on the tile. Thats the entire game.

You try to get groups of 3 or more adjacent tiles with your tokens on them. 3 Adjacent tiles you control is 3 points, 4 is 4 points and so on.

The abilities of the tiles include things like swapping tiles, picking tiles back up into your hand, moving your or other people's tokens, etc. This of course makes things a little random and less strategic, but it quick and has a great take-that factor.

Super simple and an awesome way to start or end a gaming session. Playing up to 6 certainly helps its case, too.

Went to a "new" game store today. It's a shame it is so far from my place because I would make it my normal stop. For L.A. GAF it's Game Empire in Pasadena. The place is big for a game store with equal space for the actual store and for play area. It's well
lit and has tons of shelf space for the games.

Anyway all that to say was I ended up buying two games, Nuns on the Run and Cyclades. I'll give a report on them once They hit the table but judging by what I've read they seem to be pretty good.

Ooh, I'll have to check out Game Empire. I went to a place out in San Bernardino county and wasn't impressed. I've never been to The Last Bombadier up in Burbank, but I suspect they've got a little going on board game wise.

Flynn said:
I'm giving up trying to teach RftG to casuals. It makes them cry.
I feel your pain.

I've tried to teach RftG 3 times since buying it last summer: to my wife, my friend, and my nephew. My nephew was the only one who seemed like he was enjoying it. Both my wife and friend had "never again" looks on their faces.

I even bought San Juan as an introduction to Race--and was optimistic as it is a game that everyone I've taught seems to enjoy--but it wasn't enough to get people over that first, steep learning curve hump that comes with Race.

It's like all other learning, you need to be motivated or it just ain't gonna work, and no one around me is as big a scifi/card game buff as I am.

On a brighter note, I recently picked up Forbidden Island (thinking it would be a good team building game for my students) and played it last night with my family. Even on novice we couldn't get everyone to the plane and off the island with the treasures. If you have kids and like Pandemic, FI is an inexpensive (only $15) and fun way to introduce cooperative games.

I went there a few weeks back. There are only a couple of shelves devoted to boardgames. The rest ofthe space is filled with war games and Warhammer stuff. It's not a bad place, it's big and the staff is willing to let you peruse in peace but I like Aero Hobbies in Santa Monica and Game Empire better. Aero for the location and staff and Game Empire for selection and overall store size.

So I was out at some garage sales this weekend and picked up a couple old games I had never seen before, anyone had any experience with these, might be able to give me an idea of who I may be able to get to play them?

3m1901.jpg

Got this for 50 cents. Looks like it's never even been touched.

midlife.jpg

Found a sealed copy of this for $1. If it isn't any good I'll leave it sealed and toss it on Ebay or something.

Also got an unused copy of Cranium for $1, which is fantastic as I've been unwilling to pay what it costs.

So has anyone played either of these?

So any upcoming games people anticipating that aren't expansions? Not much really catches my eye other than Merchants & Marauders.

There have been a few whispers about a reprint of TTR Nordic Countries, so I'll jump on that if it ever happens. I guess that counts as an expansion, though, and not even a new expansion, so my response is probably not useful to you.
