You know CSI is popular and all, but you can get games even cheaper now from Miniature Market usually, and they give free shipping on any order over $75

CSI used to be the best prices but MM lowered their prices few months ago on almost all their boardgames and in many instances are cheaper. Check them out first I would recommend or at least compare orders between CSI and them for who is cheaper. I've been doing all my main board game buying now from MM even though I have CSI's South Florida branch 10 minutes away drive :lol

Yes, MM is great, cheap shipping too, but their packaging leaves a lot to be desired with other companies like boardsandbits which packs every order on a huge box full of packaging peanuts.

Awesome, so, so awesome.

EDIT: Also, I predict that the number of guys requesting that their ladies dress up as French maids and play Agricola will be going through the roof.

They have been selling a casual version of Catan at places like Toys R Us and Target for a while. It's called the "Gallery" edition: plastic pieces, scoring track, the board is only 6 pieces, etc. The gameplay will be similar but it won't be expandable.
No this is "Settlers", has wood pieces no scoring track and is full size. Was like 40 or 50 dollars so it better not be the "lite" edition. :lol

Thanks for the link! My girlfriend and I did an intro to mini painting class at Gencon and I was looking for a place to buy some relatively cheap minis to practice on.

Yea they are really good prices on minis as well usually. popularcollections and troll & toad are also good mini dealers price wise as well though popularcollections is kinda... shitty service wise.

Played more Descent tonight, I guess we're in the second quest in the main game (against the giant brothers with the hearts) and it's AWESOME. Got some sweet loot after taking down the first giant, but we had to stop there since the game takes for ever. We'll pick up at the same place next week.

During the course of play we needed clarifications, so I hit the net. Have you guys seen this website? http://www.headlesshollow.com/freebies_games.html It's fucking AWESOME. Super condensed and clear rules for tons and tons of games in PDF. I downloaded the PDFs for Descent, Arkham Horror, and Chaos in the Old World for use when next we play any of them.

Does anyone have any boardgames they'd recommend for college dorm life? Ideally it would be suitable for two players in a small dorm room but also expandable for more. I saw robo rally in the beginning of the thread, would that work well in a dorm environment?

Good site, but I am disappointed that they don't seem to have Caylus on there. Of the three times we've played that game we still haven't played it completely right.

Yep, his stuff are usually the top recommended files on BGG for their respective games.

robo rally is decent for 3, but really shines with 4+. quick to learn and definitely a good dorm game though. dominion mentioned above is a very good one that scales nicely. san juan is a fairly simple card game with some mechanics that are important to more complex games and it also scales great 2-4. another very good one 2-5 is carcassonne. if you are looking for >5, that's a whole different set of games.

Ghost Stories is a 1-4 player coop game which has a fairly small space requirement. My friends and I really enjoy it. Also, Dominion is a good choice but it was already mentioned.

Universal Head is a beast when it comes to creating FAQs. So good.

Fantastic game. Great strategic elements to balance out the luck factor.

Very fun game. We were super into it a few months ago. Bear in mind that it's much simpler than gric and more on the level of a stone age. The mechanic is basically that you roll dice and can then choose among many different resource sets. You also buy buildings that modify your points and abilities and there are several other little elements that keep the game interesting. I'd put.it right below stone age but just barely.
That's pretty much what I'm after. We started playing with a new couple of couples (makes sense?) and I kind of want to ease them into Agricola so I needed an easy worker placement type game. Kingsburg just stuck out to me, mainly because of the copious amounts of dice. So Kingsburg it is, thanks for the rec, guys.

So I plan on doing Arkham Horror this saturday. It's just going to be me and my friend, I'm thinking just one investigator each to make upkeep easier on him and just the base game. I'm going to try and run through a game solo tonight just to re-familiarize myself with the rules, should be fun.

Whipped out Caylus after having it shelved for about a year or so. We finally got all of the rules down and had a great game tonight. I was surprised how close the scores ended up being (all within 15 or so points of each other; I came in 3rd out of 5).

What I love about the game is that with two minor exceptions (first turn order and pink building order) there's absolutely no luck in the game. I look forward to playing again and actually playing with an overall strategy instead of making it up as I go.

Bought 2 new games for a game night that was supposed to happen tomorrow. Well it's not going to happen and now I am sad :(

Got in a two games of Descent base game over the weekend. We played with three players each night (one different person each night). We all liked it and look forward to future play throughs, especially with the Well of Darkness expansion and possibly campaign expansions. The only drawback was the time to play. I think the Saturday night game took about 4.5-5 hours from setup to finish, though obviously that also included some introduction/rule lookup/newbie type stuff.

Also got in a few games of Dominion. One game where my friend setup the area and didn't realize with fewer players, you don't use every card in each set. So that game took about 1.5 hours (I didn't realize what had happened until mid game and by then we just said screw it). Another game we played, I let two of my friends pick out what cards to play with, which meant almost every card cost 4+ and was an attack card. That was a very mean spirited game. Though it was hilarious how one of my friends ended up with zero victory points at the end due to all the curses he had (gotta love the witch). :lol

Roborally might take up a bit too much space to actually play in the dorm room itself.

Though to be fair, I'm having a rough time thinking of any board games I play that could have been played in the dorm rooms I was familiar with...

Just as a follow up to my earlier post I am now looking in to Dungeon Lords, does anyone have any impressions on it?

Furthermore, as my favourite game is Chaos In The Old World I was wondering if anyone could recommend some similar games?

It's really good. High level theme is basically Dungeon Keeper in board game form. Well integrated theme with the gameplay (the manual is hilarious as it does this, too). Definitely better with the full four players than a smaller group, but it works with 2 even. A great job of balancing your various resources, and with a fantastic risk vs reward element (if you're evil enough, a really tough paladin joins the adventurers in your dungeon... but if you can defeat him, he's worth good points). Also has one of the best "worker placement" mechanics I've seen--choosing an action with earliest worker generally yields less good results than a later worker, limited availability on actions, and "unusable actions" each round... really great.

On the negative side...

Perhaps a bit more regressive than some players might like though--it's pretty impossible to prevent the adventurers from wrecking your dungeon at least a little... and it might even be hard to avoid them wrecking it a lot.

Generally I recommend it a lot.

Thanks a lot for that, I'd mostly be playing two player, which was my biggest concern, but it seems like it would be a lot of fun. I *love* Dungeon Keeper.

A lot in common with Galaxy Trucker, really. A good part of the game is spent building something. Then the last part is spent watching the game fuck it up.

Well then here's some more thoughts on 2 player to help you decide. Personally, I much prefer it with 3 or 4, but my wife and I have played a few 2 player and will probably play more.

Basically, there are two non player dungeons in the game. They have to exist so that the worker placement mechanic is interesting--they take up spots on the various orders you can execute, so that the two actual players have to compete over the smaller remaining spots. In two player, it's done a bit interestingly--2 of the 3 orders delivered by each player are randomized.... then the players each pick one more to place face down for the "fake players". So each player has a little bit of knowledge about what their fake player is doing that the other player doesn't have, potentially allowing them to set themselves up for a better location (fake players place before real players, and it might move you into a more valuable spot as a result).

Overall, it works pretty well, and the fake players can really take spots you want and it creates some good tension in the game. The problems I have with it is that the fake players don't have any actual effect resulting from their worker. This only REALLY matters for recruiting monsters or building rooms (the two tasks with limited choices each turn), but it greatly changes the dynamic of competing over those two spots, and I think in a bad way.

The last thing I kinda dislike about 2 player games is that at the end of the games there are bonus points awarded based on certain goals ("titles" in the game). These can be for being the most evil dungeon, to having the most rooms or monsters, etc. In a multiplayer game, these various bonuses tend to get spread out a bit, due to different focuses by the players and just the way the game went. In a 2P game, particularly with no minimum required, the rewards sometimes seem a bit silly, though it's kind of hard to explain how.

Had a nice little vacation but didn't get much boardgaming in as we were in transit a lot. Played several games on San Juan on planes (bit of a tight fit on trays, but it works). Also played Time's Up with my wife's family, which was a huge hit. Sort of killing time BG-wise for now until Prosperity I suppose; planning on teaching Tigris & Euphrates this weekend and digging into Up Front (although I won't be able to play this seriously until my brother and I are in the same time as he's the only serious wargamer I know).

Anyone planning on picking up Ascension?

I think I like the idea of a dominion-esque game where not everything is available 100% of the time.

I wasn't particularly, because I had forgotten about it, but after reading the reviews at BGG it is kinda tempting.

Especially since one of them said it was the game he was hoping Thunderstone would be.

Thanks again for all that. We decided to pick up the game today!

I want 7 wonders for this reason.

On tap for the weekend:
-Teach Tigris & Euphrates
-Play Dominion

Thinking T&E will take up most of our time tomorrow night; relearning the rules myself today.

guess not!

had an action-packed night of gaming here:

-kicked off with tigris & euphrates, teaching it to my wife and friend. taught it pretty quickly and then we basically played a much more learning-oriented game. look forward to playing this for real next time.

-then played alhambra. really dug it; seem to get more into it each time as i get a better sense of optimal tile placement and the like.

-capped it off with kingsburg + all expansions. working in all the expansions bogs the game down a bit (makes it feel like it has a lot of moving parts a la Arkham) but we all really like burg

Sorry I missed you guys. I need to brush up on T&E too.

Gonna play some Power Grid with my local board game group tomorrow. Can't wait.

I've got it in my upcoming CSI order.

Also went to Barnes & Noble today, wow their boardgame section is huge now. Fresco, Agricola, Dominion, Seaside, and tons more. Unfortunately no place to play them since there were a bunch of no-goodniks taking up the tables. Did pick up Forbidden Island though. Playing that tonight.
