Bomberman, WTF happened to you?

Did you know that one of gaming's icons turned 30 this year? Which one you may ask?

This dude right here:

Yep, starting from Eric and the Floaters on the MSX/ZX Spectrum in 1983, Bomberman has lasted 30 years. Younger than Pac-Man and that one Italian guy, but still older than most of the "Classic" series people cherish today. Yet there were no bells or whistles. No game released, no merchandise, nothing. This is a series that has had two animes, mangas up the Wazoo, helped start a toy franchise that's still in the US today (B-Daman. Seriously, the series has origins in Bomberman) and so many games it puts various other game series to shame. So it isn't like this is some obscure backwater series here, this is the mascot for a former console maker (Hudson Soft). So why is it that no one noticed until now?

Well, I have a theory. One that doesn't boil down to Konami being a dick. Without looking, name me a Bomberman character other than the one I just posted. Can't do it?
Here's some of the recurring characters in the series:

Mujoe on the left is a 45-year old professional Wrestler. Mechadoc (imaginative name, huh?) is on the right. They're obscuring the HigeHige bandits, a lackey group of robot frog... things.

Honey and Kotetsu. Two of Bomberman's friends. They have a master/disciple thing going on and show up from time to time.

The Rooies. Your mounts in many games and cameo fodder in many others. And many, many more.

So what's the theory? Bomberman is one of the only franchises where the gameplay is more popular than the characters. This basically is a ticket to laziness on a devs part, as you can just put some clothes on a basic model, stick them in a top-down view and off you go. You barely need any effort, yet even with this helpful shortcut, games haven't gotten made in this series for 3+ years. There have been canceled attempts at games, and increasingly bizarre mobile crossovers, but nothing truly substantial. It's sort of disappointing that not even Konami's janitorial staff can whip up a Bomberman anniversary title for Steam/PS4/X1/WiiU, especially with the fact that series hates moving forward.

But perhaps I'm overthinking it. But when the entire fanbase can be condensed to their own little corner, it's hard not to wonder if Konami is wrong for not letting it grow, or right for preventing it from being ruined by mainstream fanbase mentality.

I am down for a next gen Bomberman championship edition. Hell, make it 12 player and let it rain.

I still don't know why Konami bought Hudson, they pretty much killed all their franchises. What was the point?

and they didn't even have the courtesy to put a bomberman with online mp on pc before killing it off :(

What's the general consensus on the quintessential modern Bomberman (because I know everyone would say Saturn otherwise) with online mp and other nice fixins? Live? Ultra? Blast? Blitz? How damn many of of them are there?

I was thinking of bomberman64 the other day and reinstalled spiral knights. Its definately not the same, especially now not playing against friends in a living room, but its similar and brought back more nostalgia for bomberman.

I never even liked playing Bomberman. All the rounds seemed very short, and it also seemed random who won or lost depending on where power-ups were and if you noticed all the explosions going off. I'm amazed a franchise based off of that series even lasted this long.

Whoa whoa whoa. I disagree with your opinion but still respect it! But....There's not much more fun than some rounds of bomberman with your friends.

the 3DS game was the best hope.
Konami canned it, with a few other 3DS games.

But you want to know a Hudson once beloved franchise that got an even worse fate?
Tengay Makyou.
Series sold more than 2 million games in Japan yet this was the last game released:

A fucking browser game that got canned a couple of weeks/months after release.

I really think Bomberman 64 was a great advancement for the series as it really took advantage of what 3D could offer Bomberman. I played some of the others after it and I remember them going back to top-down view. While I understand that is the preferred style, they should have expanded on what 3D could offer the series.

These are Bomberman characters as far as I'm concerned:

The bunny kangaroo things are the Yoshis of Bomberman before Yoshi became a character.

RIP in peace Bomberman

I'm not sure if it's in my top 5, but Bomberman was easily in my top 10 favorite franchises ever and it's fucking dead. Between that and Mega Man my favorite series list is kind of hurting :(

Idk, I've played it with friends and I've always just been bored out of my mind. Maybe I'm just insane, but I'd rather boot up something like Halo or Smash Bros. or even Mario Party.

Had a buddy that worked for Hudson, and basically it was Konami coming in with their cold corporate attitude and gutted the company. They had a few bomberman games in the works that got cancelled.

Speaking nothing of the gameplay, the visuals of the series really suffered post 2D sprites IMO. Bomberman used to be so colorful and cleanly directed. The newer games just look so... muddy and almost unfinished. I would kill for a real sprite bomberman rather than these gross 3D renders. Not that we will ever get that :/

Can you say what they were (Along with Bonk, if possible), or is your bud chained to NDAs?

RIP Bomberman. You will be missed.

I wish Nintendo would buy the IP from Konami. I loved the Bomberman 64 games, and I love his classic multi-player mode, especially Super Bomberman 2's.
