I feel like this sentiment has to come from game-starved N64 users who just sunk time into anything decent that they could find.
I really like B64's campaign, but I didn't know a single person locally who could play multiplayer in that game for more than 5 minutes before they wanted to swap it out for one of the older games instead.
Whoa I looked up game footage of Eric and the Floaters and that is some crazy ish, had no clue at all that was part of Bomberman's history.
My favorite characters in the series were all the ethnic Bombermen in 3. Running around as a super fast tiny old Chinese guy was endless hours of fun. What a depressing thread.

Surprised so many people like Bomberman 64. Saturn Bomberman was by far the better game of that generation, and probably one of the best of the series IMO.
Yeah OP. It's Konami. It's not the characters. The Bomberman world has survived several different "universes" (Jetters, 64+Second attack, approximately SNES 2-4) with a bajillion characters that have been scrapped (Max, the five bad bombers, Bagular, Mujoe) and has more or less kept going. The only thing really essential to a Bomberman game is multiplayer and a 3D single player campaign that takes you through about six worlds, with each containing an evil bomber to fight as a mid boss.
the latter is more exaggeration but something I've appreciated from the 64 entries to the GC ones
. Multiplayer should feature the classic bomberman set up but additional modes are also a must, and from now on, each Bomberman game has got to have online.
Yeah, Bomberman died when Konami shut down Hudson in 2010. There has not been one Bomberman game release for any platform, cellphone or console, since Hudson's closure, and it doesn't look like there will be for the forseeable future. Hopefully Konami stops being so stupid and releases some more Bomberman games, the series' gameplay is as good as ever.
Yeah, I was really disappointed by this as well. I mean, Bomberman 64 was a very good 3d platformer, and really did some new things with the series, a bigger, more open-world 3d platformer Bomberman game... and then they never tried anything like it again. Bomberman Hero was kind of interesting, but wasn't really a Bomberman game -- it started development as a Bonk game, and is a single-player only linear-corridor 3d platformer. Everything after that was either traditional 2d style Bomberman game or, for the few 3d ones, just wasn't anywhere near as ambitious as Bomberman 64 had been. The two GC/PS2 ones are prime culprits on that regard. Very disappointing games, both of them.
No game in the series ever reused Bomberman 64's round bomb explosions and 3d battlefields design, for example. Bomberman 64: The Second Attack does have 3d battlefields (if I'm remembering right that it has the 3d arenas, but with cross-style bomb blasts), but the bomb blasts are usual cross-style stuff. What happened? Sure, classic Bomberman multiplayer is great, but Bomberman 64's variant of it was fun too. Why never make another game like it?
My favorite Bomberman games: (I don't have Saturn Bomberman, so I can't rate that one, but it'd probably go high on the list.)
1. Bomberman '93 (Turbografx) - classic Bomberman at its best.
2. Bomberman GB (GB) - This is actually the third Bomberman-style game for the GB, after Atomic Punk and Wario Blast, and it's the best one. Awesome game!
3. Bomberman 64 (N64) - great game, covered above. This is by far the best polygonal Bomberman game.
4. Bomberman Tournament (GBA) - this game is basically the sequel to Bomberman Quest (GB/C). Not bad.
5. Atomic Bomberman (PC) - Interplay's Western-made PC Bomberman game actually was pretty fun.
Pocket Bomberman (GB/C), the 2d platformer Bomberman game, is also fun, but it's way, WAY too easy and short. It's good while it lasts, but it won't last long. Bomberman Hero is probably the second best 3d Bomberman.
Pocket Bomberman? is that the game where Bomberman is dressed up in some Indiana Jones outfit on the cartridge, and one of his items is a whip? And the music in the first stage is all foreboding? I had that game back when I was a kid, but I wish I finished it.
Anyway, Generations and Jetters were circular bomb blast games, but I agree that there's something that wasn't all that appealing about those games. I think the puzzles were weaker, but I also much preferred the speed from 64+second attack. Plus, the addition of Charabom abilities and bomb elements weren't handled well in those games; minimal as it was in second attack I preferred the handling of elemental bomb puzzles at least in that title. The other thing about Generations and Jetters as I remember them is that the designers were content to make the maps just big as fuck, while second attack featured long levels but felt more guided and had some decent pacing to it (a boss about halfway, a new bomb type, the generators at the end.)
Of course, second attack isn't all that great, but I enjoyed it a little more than Bomberman Hero even if I generally appreciate the hardcore long levels that the game had. Bomberman Hero unfortunately featured extremely annoying segments like the Marine or Snowboarding segments, but it often featured fun challenges, diverging paths, and the ranking system. It also lacks multiplayer like 64+second attack. But I agree with you that of the ones I've played, 64 is one of the best ever.
One last thing...I didn't care much Bomberman Tournament. Five dungeons, win the game, boring charabom battles. old style Zelda Bomberman didn't work for me. Only thing I liked about the game was the boss theme for the first four of the five bad bombers.
Let's see...
Generations vs Jetters: I like Generations for being less directly anime-influenced, but I enjoyed Jetters as a game a little more. Just cant use those non-bomberman characters in multiplayer.
Bomberman World (PSX): liked it growing up, but it sucks
64 games: 64 > TSA > Hero
SNES: 2 > 1 >>>> 3 > 4 > 5. Didn't play the multiplayer for 3-5. 3 was the first game to just be another Bomberman game after coming up with the awesome first two. 4 introduces another group of bad bombers who are a lot less interesting and the game isn't particularly memorable anyway. Somewhat interesting concept with the time traveling, but there are too few zones for the concept to have any sort of real impact. With SNES 5, I love ambition but I don't have nearly enough patience for what 5 was asking for.
Generation is pretty cool. The single player is something along the lines of 64. It's sort of slow-moving, but I had plenty of fun with it. The multiplayer is based on the classic games, instead of the 3D stuff that 64 did.
Jetters's multiplayer has several playable characters with different abilities, but the single-player is basically a watered-down (and even slower) Generation.
Saturn Bomberman is fucking awesome. You've not experienced fun until you've attended a convention with a setup of 10-player Saturn Bomberman. You can even play as Bonk!
I loved the cartoon back in the day. Konami pretty much ruined everything they had and have become Metal Gear Solid the company. I would love to see how much they pay Kojima to stick around.
Is the grimdark reskin stupid?
Yeah, sure, I guess, but it still plays exactly like any Bomberman game should.
The only reason Act Zero is considered so terrible is because it was one of the first grimdark reboots to come out and people weren't used to seeing this type of thing yet.

It's honestly been so long since I played it that I forgot.
I tried for weeks to get the achievement for killing 100 dudes in a single match and could always get to 80 or so before dying.
It gets extremely hard.
Bomberman 3DS's cancellation was a huge disappointment for me. It was up there with MML3 as 2 of my most hyped 3DS games back in that first lineup (they'd still be among my most-hyped in this day).... and then they both got cancelled T_T... it was a rough time for me.
Me and my brother had a turbo and the multi-tap. So many 4 player games of bomberman 93 with friends such a awesome game. Would really like to know what our mom did with the turbo and all our games...
Bomberman Hero is definitely my favorite from the series. Very fun levels with insanely weird creatures, lots of variety, and great gameplay. Bomberman himself transforms into a water vehicle for some levels, and you can ride blue kangaroos. It's an experience.
As a kid I had Bonk for Gameboy and was surprised to see it at E3 2010. The game didn't control that well from what I remember and the jumping felt really off, but I only tried it for a few minutes.
I'm not sure why they're letting the IP die, they have enough games they could possibly port and release on many platforms, they could also sell well if they added in online multiplayer and other stuff.
I remember spending many hours playing Bomberman Online on PC... it was great. I still sometimes play Bomberman on PS3 with my wife or online, it's a lot of fun
Also remember playing the Gamecube Bomberman... it was quite cool and remember the art being nice to look at... *googles*
Hands down the best version of bomberman I've ever owned...
My best friend and I picked up a pair of saturns with netlinks in 99-2000 and would spend hours direct dialing each other playing bomberman.
There was a bomberman on xbox arcade on the 360 I think. But it wasnt nearly as fun. Perhaps its just the warm and fuzzies thinking about the glory days.
There was also Bomberman Quest on the GBC which was rather Zeldaesque as well.
I actually rather enjoyed them and they were much better single player Bomberman games than the traditional kill all enemies in the stage of the older games.
Tournament was also great for its single pack multiplayer.
