Another interesting set showing two men near the first blast site, initially with a bag a piece (one with a backpack, the other with a duffel) and then leaving where it appears that backpack man no longer has a backpack.

Especially since the backpack has a pointy bulge consistent with the handle on a pressure cooker.

Looking at the edited photo with the red arrow, you would think that. But look at this photo again:

http://img.gawkerassets.com/img/18ku25mlsl1cijpg/original.jpg

Guy with red shirt and Bruins cap covering his face with a large black backpack. Guy with white iPod earbuds and green hat carrying a pretty big black backpack. There is another guy in a blue coat holding up a camera with a large pack on his back too. Lots of people around with backpacks. The suspect doesn't exactly look all that suspicious in this context. But that white tag matches up with the bombers backpack.

But do we really know that is one of the bomber backpacks? Is this confirmed anywhere? Just wondering because I don't know if it would look like that. Would it be in complete shreds? Maybe detective GAF has some answers.

As far as I know, anything the internet may say is pure speculation at this point.

That's a good point. That backpack could've been something that someone left there that got torn up in the explosion. Completely unrelated to the bomb.

The last photo place these events nearly 2hrs before the blast. It's too tough to tell what is in anyone's hand with a crowd that large.

....Who would bring along a bottle of orange juice in their bomb bag? He also seems to be actually interested in the marathon going on.

according to ... them being the only ethnic people there? Everyone is wearing backpacks.

Might have been a false alarm. I just cropped this from an after photo that had some gore elsewhere:

Looks like the same two (likely cops/agents) from the 12 minutes before shot still with backpacks.

lol, annnnnnnnnnnnd back to square one. You should post it to Reddit, if it hasn't been posted already.

See? Detective GAF delivers. And fast.

On to the next bag? Someone mentioned that a bomb sweep was done a hour before the blast? Not sure if that is confirmed but that would tend to point to finding someone in the area leaving a bag not long before the bombs went off.

I've covered several Boston Marathons.

I know we're searching for clues, bit it's important to keep something in my mind. Stuffed backpacks are very common in this area. People turn the Marathon into a full day trip. They hold clothes and snacks for loved ones in the race. They attend Boston Coleen or Boston University.

Backpacks are EVERYWHERE down there.

This is a really important point. There are going to be a lot of innocent bystanders and victims wearing black backpacks in pictures. There are also a finite number of backpack models out there, so theres a reasonable chance that an innocent person could be wearing the very same backpack model as used by the bomber(s).

I take it you missed EVERYONE else in the same area of that photo.

But yeah, it is two hours previous to the first, so just like everything else it doesn't necessarily fit. Also, the backpack doesn't look like the one in the photo (if that was a backpack holding the bomb).

Right, but that person should still own that backpack and clear themselves rather quickly.

Someone earlier said the sourcing on that Fox zipper image was that it was suspected to have been part of the shrapnel of the bomb and not part of the backpack, but I don't know how they could know that.

Reddit suffers from people wanting that sweet Karma. Your average redditor says "If I solved the crime... just imagine how much karma I could get" so they are throwing everything out there they can in hopes that something sticks.

Most of it gets debunked within minutes. Though, I think they are on the right track, at least. More data, more photos, the better.

And, after seeing those photos... I see 100 people with huge-ass boxy backpacks. It's going to be hard to tell from these photos.

Yeah, I'm still holding out hope that a photo of the backpack on the ground will emerge. If they can establish a timeline on when it was dropped it becomes easier to sort through the pile of photos they're collecting (many of which I'm sure we'll never see) and try to make some sense of it.

certainly!

....dude and his friend look like army based on his pants/boots.

I'm just going to quote this post so people can see that the guy is probably an officer or involved with some government organization.

I doubt that much of the bag the bomb was in would survive / look like that.

That's what I'm thinking. Probably just some bag.

Also, Reddit has now moved suspicion away from the blue-robe guy. He was nowhere near the bomb, it seems.

As we thought... they got nothin'. I had thought the backpack image was one released officially by the investigation... turns out it was just some CSI zoom enhancing done by a redditor, which casts doubt on the whole premise.
