The gf and I want a game we can play together in coop right from the beginning. People at work have said they are having a blast with borderlands 2 and I see its 30 on amazon right now (PC version). So I'm thinking about buying two copies, she'll play on her laptop, I'll play on the htpc. But I'm curious if the game lets you play coop right from the getgo and still get to experience a complete story, or is it stand alone and the coop parts are like missions?

Also is it easy to jump into and understand the story and characters if you never played the first?

Yep literally right in the first screen before in game you can invite people to do coop.
