Bought a new 3DS: "An error has occurred"

I just opened my new black 3DS XL and went through the configuration. When I tried to set up the Internet Connection it went into search mode and after a few seconds I got the message:

"An error has occured. Hold down the POWER Button to turn off the power, then turn it on and try again. For help, visit support.nintendo.com."

I thought it could be the SD Card, but the error comes up again when I activate the Wireless capabilities, even without an SD card in the system.
What are my options right now? Can I update the 3DS through the SD Card? Is my system broken out of the box?

I wanted to go digital only with this thing - Seems like I'm off to a great start!

I don't know what's up, but I've had an original 3DS since 2011 and I just recently started getting the same error. It started after transferring my data to another larger card, but it still had the same problem when swapping back. It also happened before and after the latest firmware update. Not sure what's up, but I also get a "cannot read SD card" error with any card I start. The card that came with the system two years ago and the new one.

I have four 3DS and it happened twice on my 2011 OG and that's all. I would return it, seems like a faulty unit

Those kind of errors were fairly common at launch (Ghost Recon would crash literally every hour or two with it), but I believe everything's since been fixed, so if you're getting an error like that now, there's probably something wrong with the hardware.

get a Vita.

Just kidding.
sounds like a faulty unit... neither my 3DS or 3DSXL has done something similar.

maybe it's the wifi receptor, or the sd card slot.

have you tried doing a "system format" and try again?

Try turning off the WI-FI with the right hand switch. does the error still occur without Wi-Fi?

Nope, just with WiFi on. I'll send it back - since its amazon, I'll just return it and buy one in a local store. I don't think I'd get a new unit until the end of the 'so many games' promotion.

Yeah, seems like you're doing the right thing by taking it back and swapping it for another.

What games were you looking to download off the eShop once you get the new unit up and running? Just curious...

I'll start with Pushmo, Luigi and Fire Emblem - got 1 VIP Code, so I'll get another one and make use of the 'so many games' promotion.

Almost two months ago I bought a 3DS and couldn't update it's firmware. I even made a thread about it I think.

I always got an error message.

After the 105 try (I'm not even kidding) the thing finally updated.

I didn't have the option of returning it, so I was pretty relieved when it finally updated.

So if you can't just return it, keep trying and hopefully it will work out.

Yeah, that's unfortunate! :/ I purchased the original 3DS at a midnight launch from a Best Buy. My friend and I both started our consoles up and I had noticed that his system volume was higher than mine, and after tampering with settings, etc., I couldn't manage to get it to sound as loud as his, and by the time we both realized it, it was too late to go back to the store that night (even though we were playing in the parking lot in his car). So I had to wait until the next morning to return it and pick up another one. I felt crushed because I was beyond stoked to get the system, and I had the horrible luck of getting a faulty one at launch. Oh well!

ha! had the exact same error!

it's a defect Wi-Fi module. nothing you can do. jest get a replacement.

seems like Nintendo cheapened out there.

I returned the black one and got a red unit, which was 20 EUR cheaper. Why the hell not :P

Works like a charm, only question remaining to me is - when I connect the club Nintendo account with the 3DS, how do I redeem the game I bought on the eShop in Club Nintendo? Or does it just take a while?

Had the same problem with my black 3DS XL. Turns out I forgot to add the MAC address to the white-list in the access point.

Oy, I've been having this same problem recently. Seems like it happens 4 out of 5 times I try to do something involving extra data/Street/Spotpass data, like downloading something from the eShop, playing Mario Kart (came preloaded on my XL), getting new Swapnotes, going to Mii Plaza, or, annoyingly, in the middle of playing Luigi's Mansion.

I haven't tried getting the newest update yet, think I'll do that.
