It makes perfect sense if you like something to want to see it succeed financially, because that means the company can justify the cost of making more of the thing you like.

Star Wars is not in that scenario and I don't think it ever will be

Because they did the smart thing. They don't release movie on fridays in those countries. They decided to be 2 days early than a week late.

In France theaters are not allowed to screen new releases on a Friday? Or is it just some kind of tradition for films to premiere on a Wednesday?

I know plenty of studios have been releasing movies early in foreign markets, I just don't understand why they do that instead of a simultaneous release.

I agree, SW will always be a movie that will sold tickets but it's still fun to follow something successful, I was afraid for a long time about Mad Max numbers, they were terrific despite being one of the best movie of this year while Jurassic World explode everything at the Box Office while being pretty bad.

This is the same as asking why they don't release the movie on wednesday in America.

Exactly the same.

It can be done exceptionally, but movie companies don't like it, especially not when it's done by a big company for such a big event.

It either 2 days early, or skipping the week end entirely and having to wait middle of next week. Disney isn't that foolish.

I'm dying at the people defensively coming forward and actually admitting they're shareholders in response to that post. lmao

Mad Max needed all the help it could get, it was a massive rated R blockbuster that should've bombed out hard

STAR WARS MAKES ME MONEY THO

they're basing it on what they believe is an achievable (for star wars) average, times number of screens.

I don't doubt that they've got this box office science shtick down to a tee, but it still feels too big. I gotta listen to my heart, and my heart just ain't havin' it. We'll see.

Box Office Mojo predicted a $215M opening for The Dark Knight Rises.

Everyone gets sucked into the hype of these sorts of films. Star Wars may well open to $230M, but BOM and similar sites aren't basing their predictions on precise science.

French-speaking Switzerland (French-speaking).

Wasn't there a Star Wars vs Avengers 2 box office thread earlier in the year? I would be curious to see how many people actually picked Star Wars.

It's fair to say that something put a stymie on DKR OW though....right?

But 215 in 2012 was too ambitious I think.

It isn't just limited to Star Wars. If Star Wars makes tons of money then the genre will get more attention and funding. Like space sci fi? Then Star Wars making bank is good for you.

This never happened last decade, despite The Phantom Menace being the second highest grossing film of all time at one point worldwide (and third of all time domestically).

It helped keep things going for a while. Farscape's premiere was timed to coincide with TPM. Stargate SG-1 lasted ten frelling seasons and spawned multiple spinoffs. Andromeda debuted. Star Trek Voyager and Enterprise kept Trek on the TV until Revenge of the Sith. Firefly flew by. Battlestar Galactica came out in 2003 and turned a substantial number of heads.

A lot of the reasons for these shows being on the air are unrelated, but there's a definite connection. There always is. I've written extensively on it (trust me I'm an expert TM) and it's there. There's a stronger connection to space on the whole when Star Wars fever takes hold.

Doesn't mean it won't this time. And the effect is hard to trace. Star Wars success could have been the reason Tron was green lighted or other big projects.

I suppose I was concentrating on big budget movies and not smaller budget TV shows.

so..

Star Wars made more in one single night than the entire opening weekend of In the Heart of the Sea?

Italy grossed the same as sweden with 5 times the population and less than half than france. We so poor boys ;_;

Lucas to Irvin Kershner regarding Empirse Strikes Back: "The Film has to be much better and much bigger and much more complex than Star Wars. Because if the second one doesn't work it's the end of Star Wars. If it does work then I can continue making more of them".

I follow box office for movies/franchises I enjoy for the same reason. II they are financially successful for the studio then they'll continue making more of them.

I'll never understand why fans get so invested in how much money Disney makes. Are all of you guys shareholders?

yes in my case, I bought in last week after the dip. I don't even have any interest in seeing this but I'm hoping it will do gangbuster

Italy's box office has seen better days. Ditto with Spain.

Deathly Hallows Pt 2 had an opening day of $4.6M in Italy (also a Wednesday).

so :

- France $5.2M
- Italy $2.0M
- Sweden $1.7M
- Norway $1.1M
- Denmark $1.0M
- Belgium $0.8M
- Netherlands $0.8M
- Finland $0.6M
Other markets $0.9M
Total $14.1M

For comparison's sake, here are the OD number for Deathly Hallows Part 2 in the same countries (all of these were Wed releases as well).

- France $7.1M
- Italy $4.6M
- Sweden $2.1M
- Norway $1.8M
- Denmark $1.6M
- Belgium $1.4M
- Netherlands $1.7M
- Finland $0.75M

Don't know about other countries, but French box office for Star Wars is probably missing a few bucks. They had screenings till 4 am.

You sure about that when the article itself says they were the biggest single days of all time in Norway and Sweden?

But how many tickets?

I'll never understand why anyone would click on a thread they have no interest in and tell everyone they shouldn't be interested either.

your numbers look..... off... source?

Anecdotally I think this weekend will be huge. Most people I know barely go to movie theaters anymore, much less on opening weekend. Literally almost everyone I know is going this weekend or next (coworkers, friends, family, etc). It's crazy.

Yeah, I haven't seen anything like this before. It's all anyone at work is talking about.
