I don't think this is a confirmation of specific plans -- it reads like an endorsement of the general principle that selling cheaper, smaller, redesigned hardware is something Sony likes to do. These kinds of comments are no-brainers, but are also irresponsible. If this gets widely reported as "PSP redesigned confirmed," it's going to be a nasty version of the Osborne effect for Sony.lancubap said:PSP Lite is coming guys. But when ? Thanks for posting this...now I can use it as a reminder to people. Watch the trolling in this thread!NeonBlade said:I wonder if this new redesign will include dual screens and a touch screen. Sony needs anything to help stop the suck with that poor hand held.
Have not read the thread posts but if it was coming out "in the long term" it would be very stupid of Sony to confirm a redisign now, because a lot of people will hold out on buying a system that will get a redesign (and likely a pricedrop for the older model).lancubap said:PSP Lite is coming guys. There are a couple of problems with applying the Nintendo-perfected model of periodic releases that progressively refine annoyances from previous versions to the PSP. For one, Nintendo likes to get people who own earlier-generation hardware to rebuy newer revisions. In this case, I'm not sure the PSP userbase is large enough to see huge proceeds from existing PSP owners who would enjoy the new features. If price really is the sticking point for most people, a redesign would have to both improve the design AND come in cheaper for this to make a huge difference. Frankly, if the redesign is going to be $199 or more, Sony should consider a price cut now to get more people into the system and then hope that the enhanced model will entice people back to the higher price point.

Really? I should hold off on buying the PS3 then. The redesigned PS3 can be released any day now. I'm expecting it to be announced this E3, and if it is not, I'll still hold off on buying a new PS3. In the mean time, I'll periodically pop into various PS3 threads and off-handedly state that I'm waiting for the PS3 redesign and others would do well to follow my lead.Ranger X said:Hey guys, there's a PS3 redesign coming in the future.

CamHostage said:I'm not seeing Tilt Controller in the rumored feature set, and it's making me VERY nervous. This system needs tilt, it'd be so good for it. It'd solve many of the camera problems, it'd bring it in synch with what's going on with PS3, and it could be backward-compatible with older PSP models (just sell or pack in a tilt USB add-on and away you go.)
I would also like to see the Camera built in (if they have any gameplay ideas for it, but if the Japanese release is anything to go by, leave it as just an accessory), and maybe some other niceties would be good. The Flash RAM would be nice and I would like to see it move towards a downloadable-game business (damned UMDs did nothing good for gaming other than allow GTA to be ported), but I don't see many being happy about being restricted to downloads and also being confused about what to do with too many downloaded games (no matter how big the save space.) Maybe add bluetooth so it can synch to PS3 without a cord (but leave in the option.) A screen that doesn't scratch would be nice too. Overall, I want it to be the same (and I don't want a PSP2 this early, it'd kill everything Sony worked for to make an ugly move like that after peacocking around with a system that still could not stand up to the dominant powers of a Nintendo-controlled handheld business), but some changes are due for this system, especially since Nintendo took everything wrong with the first DS and fixed it in the first damned year. It'd be really easy to make a cleaner and tighter PSP without segmenting the market, and I don't know why Sony is being hesitant about changing the small details -- this would be just a little touch-up, not some GB-to-GBC change, it wouldn't even be as drastic as PS1 pad-to-DualShock.
OLED screens pretty much eliminate ghosting, are brighter, using less power and take up less space (thinner, could leave space for something else, maybe touchpad).Pimpwerx said:-Better screen? Are you really gonna pay extra for another screen that has the same ghosting problems, but to a slightly less degree? All LCDs ghost, it's just a matter of how much.
The screen size must remain the same since it's so damn nice. A brighter screen? Is that even possible without a mobile generator?

Something needs to happen with the PSP, ASAP.
That's the message retailers have, according to our sources, sent Sony. With sales of the PSP lagging (Sony's PSP hardware shipments to retailers last Fall were down 72 percent over the year before, only a meager 10,000 units in the U.S.), word is that a few big name retailers have given Sony a mandate: drop the price or they'll drop the system from their stores. Entirely. With shelf space at a premium, the expectation is for Sony to do something substantial to keep its hardware moving -- or else.
Coming up on the second anniversary of the PSP (March 24th), a price drop seems possible -- after all, the price was lowered by $50 two days before its first anniversary last year. But according to Sony, that's not yet in the cards. Speaking with John Koller, the Senior Marketing Manager for the PSP, at the Game Developers Conference last week, 1UP learned that a price drop was not announced to retailers at Sony's Destination PlayStation retailer event last week.
But something else was.
According to Koller, Sony did share plans that got retailers excited. Of course, what these plans were exactly, he wouldn't say. Could they be new PSP colors that have been previously shown and released in Japan and Europe? Or could they be the redesigned PSP with 8 GB of flash memory that's been rumored for ages? Or could they be the launch of some new PSP video/music download service? We'll likely have to wait a few more weeks to find out.
And whether it's coming soon or later down the road, a redesign for the PSP is in the works. According to Koller, Sony is in the process of reducing parts and potentially adjusting the size -- similar to what's been done with the PS1 and PS2. "I can at least say this much, the screen won't be changing in size," he said.
It seems that Sony hopes to repeat the success Apple has had with the iPod's pricing structure -- thanks to new colors and models, the iPod's price has largely remained the same over the years. Koller also admitted that Sony paid close attention to the spark in sales the DS Lite iteration of the Nintendo DS caused once it released.
One thing is clear, though: something will happen with the PSP soon. Now, we just need to wait.
