Breath of Fire Series Appreciation Thread

I loved BoF2 and BoFV. I think the series has a really unique brand identity which sadly hasn't been replaced anywhere else. Really sad that Capcom is now a third world game publisher unable to afford the production of normal titles. Just imagine a modern HD BoF game like Persona 5, except with Guilty Gear Xrd style celshaded graphics. OMG. :(

Definitely would be a dream come true!

I love all five Breath of Fire titles, and would be ecstatic if a proper "VI" came out :)

Silver lining and glad they used a standard "6" instead of a Roman numeral "VI" for the mobile title haha

What's everyone's favourite dragon form in the series? Hard not to love Kaiser form in BoFIII even though you don't look like a dragon at all.
The adult dragon forms in both Breath of Fire 1 and 3 are great, even if the usefulness of the BoF 1 adult dragons is pretty short-lived. I like the classic dragon look. On the other hand, the breath attack animations for Kaiser and Tyrant in BoF IV are hype as hell. I do prefer transforming into a full dragon though. While the hybrid forms are pretty cool, they just are not the same.

D-Dive is incredible though. Flattening things in a single hit never gets old. Odjn also has a great design (see avatar). Too bad it doesn't appear properly in the game.

I also have a certain appreciation for Agni/Infinity from 1. As weird as its design is, transforming into a dragon more powerful than the final boss and killing a god in one-on-one combat is something else.

BOF2 is definitely my favourite and one of my all time favourite RPG's. I'm also a pretty big fan of V and I enjoyed the other games as well. It's sad to think this franchise is all but dead. I still regularly go back and replay BOF2 and own it own every platform it has released on so I'll always have that at least.

Are there any QoL changes to the PSP version of Breath of Fire III? Combined with it being on sale right now, this thread is making me interested in picking it up for my Vita.

The Desert doesn't turn you around after a random battle anymore. Other than that there was only small changes. It's very pretty on Vita though.

I am really glad to see this thread getting a solid reception here, I was worried it would die in a few posts.

Favorite dragons? Design wise, it'd definitely be the BoFIII dragons, specifically the "Dragon" and the Warrior gene variants.

Warrior.jpg~c200

And I think that includes the BoFIV dragon form, because it was essentially Warrior Form outside of the breath attacks.

D-Dive is incredible though. Flattening things in a single hit never gets old. Odjn also has a great design (see avatar). Too bad it doesn't appear properly in the game.

BOF5's D-Dive is one of the most satisfying and impacting RPG mechanics I think i've ever encountered. I don't believe I have ever actually felt the burden of possessing extreme power in an RPG character before I played Dragon Quarter.

The concept of literally being able to one-shot ANY foe in the game, at will, is something that just sounds absurd. But Dragon Quarter was so well-designed that i've spent time staring at the battle screen, just contemplating whether or not the boss was stressing enough to warrant me just transforming and blowing them away.

This is definitely one of my favorite RPG series, and as far as narratives go, it's probably the one i have the most respect for.

I loved all the games in the series and I miss it terribly.....

I was a truly above average RPG with tons of content and great graphics for the time. I

II was....horribly translated but did have the awesome Fusion system and extremely dark story.

III s my favorite because of how well-rounded everything was. Great characters, solid battle system, vibrant world, lots of content.

IV is also top notch thanks to the incredible sprite work, stirring soundtrack, including one of greatest intro musical pieces in RPG history, and Fou Lu's amazing story arc.

I also enjoyed V for what its worth. It gets way too much hate when it was rather innovative for the time and very replayable. I didn't care for the art style but it won me over in the end,

Speaking of the series, one thing that always bothered me about BoF 1:
How come the game never told you the exp needed for your characters to level?!

I thought the d-dive was bad. As someone who never used it I went into the final set of bosses with 50%. Then I killed every boss in one or two hits. I find that really boring that it can even happen.

I played and loved them all. 3 I've played the most but I really need to replay 4 again.

I would love for a proper 6 to be made some day.

hnng. this would be my number one gaming want. I couldn't put a picture to the possibility before but this would be a juicy package right here.

i've played nearly all of them and never finished any of them. i just picked up 4 and i promised myself i'd finish it when i get around to playing it. never played 5, would love to ge the chance to try it if they make it available as a ps2 classic.

What is your favourite game in the series?
Who are you favourite characters? Your favourite versions of Ryu and Nina?
What are some of your favourite songs from the series?
What are some of your most memorable moments with BOF?
What are your favourite fan art pieces?

1. Breath of fire 2 for nostalgia, characters and story, Breath of fire 5 for the combat and music (but hate the char design...).

2. Nina 2 and Bleu/Deis. Ryu 3 have the better design, but Ryu 2 is the most awesome Ryu because the story.

3. Bof 1 world map, Bof 5 Kind Friends ,Bof 5 Attack , Sarah Theme, Bof 3 Everyday battle

4. All sad scenes
(Rand mother death, Ray death, Mina transformation, that lionman death, et cetera)
, "Ekarl Hoppa De Pe Tapeta"/Jean arc and Barubary doing evil things to Ryu in Bof 2, Nina rescue/Sarah fighting Jade/the intro of Bof1 and all Boss battle in Bof 5.

So is it imperative to play the games in order or is it okay to jump into 3 first?

3 is a great starting point. Great characters, great writing, great localization. Every character feels unique in both dialogue and gameplay and has a wonderful time skip about half way through that feels good. The world and characters really grow throughout.

The biggest downside is that they made the main character too dual purposed. Nina who is traditionally the healer is a "black mage", and your main character is often saddled with the roles of top damage dealer AND sole/best healer for huge portions of the game with it being difficult to switch between said roles.

(Ryu does the most damage but only in dragon form, and in dragon form he can't heal and you have to use a turn to go into and out of dragon form)

That said, the master and skill system allow you to build characters however you like, even if some characters are better built for one build or another. The only major problem there is it feels like the system isn't explained well enough early on and a lot of the early masters are difficult to find unless you're super thorough or you have a guide.

BoF5 is an absolute triumph of game design, and pulls off a great, understated story in the era of CGI and Tidus laughs. The story and cutscene direction hold up to this day.

Also, the Hitoshi Sakimoto soundtrack is fantastic. Don't hear people talk about that enough.

PSA- it's one of the few JRPG gems that you can still pick up for LESS THAN TEN DOLLARS. Even trash like Unlimited Saga and Suikoden IV cost more.

I love 4 as well for being a solid JRPG with incredible pixel art and animations. Still need to get back to three.

I like BoF5, but calling it BoF5 was the mistake, IMO. It would be like calling Vagrant Story a Final Fantasy game. Sure, it's tangentially-related because it contains some references and elements, but otherwise it has nothing in common with the main series.

I really enjoy making weird Ryu builds. Mage Ryu can be a lot of fun.

3 gave birth to my hatred of desert sections in rpgs. I think what really pisses me off about the desert is that if I remember correctly plot wise the game has just picked up steam because you know you're heading towards the end of the game and suddenly the desert just completely halts all that for a very boring and dull part of the game. Its like you're about to enjoy a delicious dessert but first you must eat a big bland uncooked and unseasoned potato.

What is your favourite game in the series?
Tough, but probably four. Three and four are my favorites for sure, although I think that three has too many random encounters and four is too slow in general.

Who are you favourite characters?
BoF: Bleu.
BoF2: Katt and Jean.
BoF3: Rei and Teepo.
BoF4: Scias and Ershin.

Your favourite versions of Ryu and Nina?
BoF4 or 5 for both, they're about equal. Four's art style is my favorite, but five's designs are unique and very memorable.

What are some of your favourite songs from the series?
All of the jazz from BoF3. It's so strange for a fantasy game but it's really memorable and unique.

What are some of your most memorable moments with BOF?
It's a bad memory, but in BoF3 you run around in this mountainous area with Momo. It had some sort of laboratory and I didn't know where to go as a child so I ran around for many hours before taking a break on the game. We didn't have internet at the time (it was the late 90s).
In the first game, I love when you get a statue of yourself placed in one of the early cities. I used it as a base for the rest of the game due to it feeling like I was a hero to the citizens.
All of the Fou-Lu sequences from BoF4. I vaguely remember people saying that they hated them, but man, I thought he was really cool and I felt like a badass as him.
I haven't played any of them recently aside from 4, so I'm sorry if I'm a bit off on these details. They're just what are in my head.

What are your favourite fan art pieces?
The pixel-art reimaginings that have already been posted in this thread. My god I would love to play a game that looked like them.

BoF I and II are good RPGs, but imo it's on the third installment where this series really starts to shine, and become more original.

III is one of those games that marked my teenage years, it's among my top three jRPGs of all time and it's hard to exactly describe why.

I guess it's how it deals with the subject of coming of age, and nostalgia. Also the last arc of the game is amazing. Capcom nailed the feeling of venturing into the unknown (Black Ship and onward).
Also, re-uniting with Rei, man....dem feels. Then even sadder was finding Teepo again.

Bonus: Kudos for Sunder & Balio. They were some top notch antagonists.

Bonus II: Rei transforming into Weretiger = 10/10

Then came IV. Another amazing game. Very original art, music, and plot. This game is pretty intense plot wise.
Finding Elina was a devastating moment, and Yuna never got what he deserved. Is there another game where the bad guy gets away?
:(

*sigh*

I really really miss Breath of Fire.

What is your favourite game in the series?
III

Who are you favourite characters? Your favourite versions of Ryu and Nina?
Rei and Scias.
Ryu and Nina both from III.

What are some of your favourite songs from the series?
Technology (III), both World Maps from III, Donden (III), World Map (IV), Bastard Sword (IV)...could keep going...

What are some of your most memorable moments with BOF?
Being separated from Rei and Teepo, and finding them again way later in the game.

I've never played a BoF game ever before so I don't know why but I bought BoF3 for PSP last week when I saw it on sale for $4.99. I hope it's good, GAF!

I thought the d-dive was bad. As someone who never used it I went into the final set of bosses with 50%. Then I killed every boss in one or two hits. I find that really boring that it can even happen.

The key to enjoying D-Dive is to let go of the hesitation and just use it. Smash every boss and tough encounter you run across with it, and feel no regrets. Then, just go back to the start of the game when your D-Counter starts getting too close to 100%. On the second time around, use what you have learned and your improved gear to clear stuff you D-Dived past originally. Continue to use D-Dive when you feel it is necessary.

Dragon Quarter is a game designed to be restarted several times before you beat it, then replayed again in pursuit of earning a superior D-Ratio. Trying to beat the game in one go involves fighting against the design of the game and rejecting what makes it so unique and fun.

I know it is not for everyone, but I absolutely adore everything Dragon Quarter attempted.

I absolutely loved the amount of combinations and unique dragon sprites Breath of Fire 3 had.
Tiamat will probably go down as my favorite dragon form from the entire series.
I remember being in awe when I stumbled across this one when I was just mixing random genes on my first playthrough as a kid.
Nonetheless Warrior from was badass.

I played every BoF entry, just V is left and one of the next games i will play through, as i already bought it used for about 2€ in a very good condition.

I love every single one, but III and IV did it for me. I would give IV a bit more credit though. I immersed so deep into this game. It was a sweet sweet summertime while being in primary school still with zero english skills but hell of a fun. I never experienced being so hooked before. It was ecstatic running through the early deserts and then these nice woods. This thrilling as you switch to Fou-Lu and run over your enemies like a mowing machine and then this gripping as you learn about the fate of Elina in this horrendous and gruesome dungeon
that srsly felt a bit too much for my age back then
.
It nearly was sexual lol.

Still get this sweet summer feeling back when i play it. Fishing is also such a nice and relaxing part.
Hopefully Capcom releases a BoF fishing game for mobile. I would be down for it, if it looks like IV. That's the only mobile game I would allow them to release actually... *cries*.

That's my cup of tea! It's even in my workout playlist, haha!

If you play BoF1 be prepared to fight bosses who won't die even if they're killed.
(seriously, you deplete their HP bar and they get their "second wind" for several more turns, it's bullshit but I love it)

Thinking about what an HD installment of BoF would be like. Capcom would probably take a page from Atlus and go full harem anime. Ryu, Nina and Rinpoo attending Windia Academy and what not. Uniforms, social links, the works...

I disagree.
I completed it in one go and consider it the most well-designed JRPG in terms of gameplay tradeoffs and challenge that I ever played (and I've played a whole damn lot of them).

Just goes to show just how excellent and versatile its design is.

What is your favourite game in the series?
Breath of Fire III

Who are you favourite characters?
Rei (BoF III).
Garr (BoF III).
Momo (BoF III).
Fou-Lou (BoF IV).
Teepo (BoF III).

Your favourite versions of Ryu and Nina?
Breath of Fire IV version.

What are some of your favourite songs from the series?
For The Race (BoF III - Battles against Dragons).
A Raging Emperor's Buffet (BoF IV - Final boss -Good Ending version-)

What are some of your most memorable moments with BOF?
- Supposed death of
Rei and Teepo
in BoF III.
- Garr's
sacrifice
in BoF III.
- The sad ending of BoF II and the track that goes along in the soundtrack
"You must live !" witch is what Nina says in her cries.
.
- The desert in the french version of BoF III : all the instructions makes no sense (Go left, and then go up. While you're going DOWN, go up then go left. After going RIGHT, go left). See ? Makes no sense.
- The entire french translation of BoF III was hilarious ("Let's go !" was translated "Let us go !", "Have you seen that ship ?!" "Have you seen that SHEEP ?!").
- BoF IV bad ending.
- Most of the Fou-Lou memories.

What are your favourite fan art pieces?
Can't find it but the official artworks where great.

No lie, I came up with a BoF style - warrior form for D&D that allowed you to go into it into combat so you'd get dragon attacks (claw, claw, rend, breath weapon, etc). It was sweet af.

These Suikoden, Breath of Fire topics are sad. Makes me remember why I barely play any RPG anymore and stopped buying main PS consoles.
I got back some of it with a few games like the kiseki, but even that is done for now.

All there is to it is retro gaming.

I disagree.

I also completed it in one playthrough but it was painful.
Never did I want to go back to the beginning which made the last battles really hard as I used the D-dive very very badly.
This game looked like a survival
almost
horror game too me, so it was hard to enjoy it that much

I need to play through BoF III fully.
I have it in PSP, and while I like it, the slow start made me lose interest. I also only really liked the lion guy from who I met up to now.

I was definitely only early on though. I'd stolen money from someone in a mansion, and I was by myself at this mountain area when I last played if I remember correctly.

My man. Cost only 3 AP per turn. Devastating breath attack.

For me, to this day, very few games can give me an emotional impact as powerful as when I finished the last moments of BOFV. The moment when Ryu broke the 100% limit... And when an unlikely group of trio, the lowest member of the caste system, a broken air-filtering human, and (IIRC) a rebelling low level member of the army finally managed to gaze upon the clear blue sky, despite everything... Goosebumps.

The real question here is... 3 or 4?

Can't choose, personally. =/

This is what it comes down to for me. I usually opt for the former, but nostalgia plays a part in it. I was just really, really into gaming at the time and this one hit all the right notes. One of my favorite PSX games. Rei (BoF3) is probably my favorite character in the series, too.

"Well, doesn't this just beat all?"

I love it too.

I wonder if Capcom will ever re-release the first five games on PS4 PSN or even on PC...that would be great!

I wouldnt mind double , even triple dipping xD.

I have loved this series for a long time but it took a while for me to actually beat any of them or get to play 3 and 4 in the series. Last year I replayed the gba version of Breath of Fire 1 and was surprised at good the pacing is and quite playable still. Found it innovative that they always have 2 endings to the games.

After finishing 1 and I continued where I left with 4. I love the cast, story and the twists by playing the villain. However the minigames along with the terrible sections where you have to find a hidden place (like the desert in 3) are horrible. I also got a bit fed up the climate and surroundings. Other than that it is almost my favourite BOF game.

What I love about the games is how they make the heroes question their actions, humour and dark plots. A lot of the characters are fun and got a lot of personality.

Only game I have left in the series is Dragon Quarter and retranslated of BOF 2.

BoF3 was one of the first RPGs in general that I really sank my teeth into as a kid and booyyy I loved it. Damn shame what Capcom's done to the franchise.

Strangely, the only one I've beaten is 1. When I was 11-13, I caught up on the SNES classic JRPGs I'd missed not having a console until the PlayStation, and Breath of Fire was on that list. (As were FF4, Tales of Phantasia, Secret of Mana, Seiken Densetsu 3, and plenty of other games. I played FF5/FF6/Chrono Trigger for the first time via their PSX ports.)

I enjoyed 1. More than most, it seems. So it's weird that I never got to 2. I just... I don't know. It just never happened. I'm gonna be 30 this year, so to say I barely remember 1 is fair. And yet, I do remember bits and pieces. A giant. A blue-haired boy. A... canyon? I'm not sure what else. The giant traipsed across the world map, perhaps?

Right now, I'm on another missed-JRPGs kick. I never played many PS2 JRPGs, either, because I ran into tough times as an adolescent and mostly skipped gaming after PSX. I played FF10, FF12, Xenosaga Episodes I and I, and Star Ocean 3, but no other PS2 JRPGs come to mind offhand. I made time in life for those few, and for Metal Gear, and that was about it. So, that's another little gauntlet I'm going through.

I'm doing Shadow Hearts at the moment, and I'm headed into Covenant afterward if my enjoyment level keeps up. I've played Persona 3 and Persona 4. I'd like to do a Suikoden run. Stuff like that.

But Breath of Fire's on the list. It's absolutely on that list. I've heard very good things about 2-4, and occasionally (see: this thread) about Dragon Quarter as well. I look forward to seeing what the fuss is about, and I thank you, OP, for celebrating a classic JRPG franchise. I may not have much experience with it personally, but I have plenty of experience loving the genre, even despite my big gaps in gaming. My heart beats J-R-P-G.
Even when the dialogue gets rough like that. :P

You've gotta play 2. It's just the best. I still go back and replay now and then.

What I loved about all of them is the basic theme is still there but they're all so different story-wise at the same time.

I loved all of the BoF games with 3 being my favorite just because of the gene system. I enjoyed 5 but I didn't like how it handled the dragon system. I wish they had lowered it's power but let us use it as a normal skill in battle. It felt like a waste of a cool system because you could barely use it.

Can anyone confirm that BoF4 on PSN is less than a gig? I have a PS Vita TV but no memory card to expand it beyond its base memory.

just realized the op skips back and forth between 2 and 4
put 2 in the garbage can and put some images of 3 up there please

I like this whole series but I LOVE BoF3 and Dragon Quarter despite them both being so different than eachother. Those two games are some of my top rpgs of all time. When I think of BoF3 I think about how much I adored every single character and how epic of a tale it told spanning over many years. Dragon Quarter I remember for its fascinating and mysterious world. The entire ending was very memorable. Just great games :)

For me BoFIII ranks up there with games like Xenogears, Suikoden and FFVII in terms of JRPGs that owned my teen years. BoFIV I have yet to play to this day, but I have always heard glowing things about it.

I probably had more random drawings of Ryu, Nina and whatever Dragon forms my imagination could come up with as a kid than of any other series.

Btw, play IV. It deserves it and is like a dollar on PSN right now.
