British intelligence and NSA considered possibly capturing Kinect webcam traffic

If you've ever shown your junk on Kinect, the Queen has it.

Do terrorists play Just Dance? No real justification for this that I can see

The "theory" is that anything that can be used for communication could be used by terrorists if it's not monitored. That they would use something "innocent" like a children's toy (game console) because they are nefarious and evil... But as far as I know, no terrorist organization has been tied to using such methods.

Note that the files date from 2008-2010, and Kinect was released in fall 2010. If they were discussing it before it released, they almost certainly went ahead with it.

So the queen now works in British Intelligence. Knew her face on money was dodgy and a sign shes watching us all. This is a f'ing joke. I bet Prince Charles' ears are some sort of listening device too they have to be.

Can local governments arrest NSA agents for owning child porn? If they are blanket survelling everyone then surely the NSA has the biggest cache of child porn in the world.

What's really absurd is that they think a terrorist would be likely to buy a video game console and webcam for communication purposes with their other terrorist buddies to plan out terrorist activities.

Why? Wouldn't it be easier for them to just get a disposable cell phone and communicate on that without using their real names? No images of the person, no IP address, no name records tied to that number....

I really don't think they are collecting this data because of "terrorists". There is much more to it than that.

I'm sure the capability is there. Why waste time and resources is the biggest question. What really kills me about the NSA spying, is that the American people lose their ever loving mind over giving condoms to high schoolers, but look at this obvious violation of the Constitution and shrug like its nothing.

Terrorist number 1 '' Lets meet in a private place with no one around and discuss our final mission''

Terrorist leader '' No, its not safe. Lets log on to Xbox live and have a skype chat, you can show me round like MTV cribs. Do you have the weapon, I hear its dabomb.....''

That's because they all use Miiverse. They used to use Pictochat and swapnote to plan bombings.

Does someone have a list of all the Microsoft statements they made when they were assuring the public that this was not possible at all? I'm not saying that it actually happened, I'm just curious.

I wanted to dominate the living room. Then I took an ESRAM in the knee.
That's probably true for every single internet-connected camera out there. Everybody should deal with that as he or she thinks appropriate. I must admit that since Snowdens leak's, I've become less condescending towards tinfoil hats.

What Microsoft has been denying is that there's a backdoor built in the Kinect allowing it to be turned on remotely and/or without your knowledge. This is different - intelligence agencies talking about capturing video when you know the camera is turned on and streaming to someone.

It's not possible for non-videochat stuff, because that didn't leave the system.

People here who are saying that the thread title is over reacting: Please read the actual article.

Kinect on XB1 has facial recognition and the NSA...

Beyond webcams and consoles, GCHQ and the NSA looked at building more detailed and accurate facial recognition tools, such as iris recognition cameras – "think Tom Cruise in Minority Report", one presentation noted.

Although this might also be scary too, if they were to be put in stores and all:

The same presentation talks about the strange means the agencies used to try and test such systems, including whether they could be tricked. One way of testing this was to use contact lenses on detailed mannequins.

To this end, GCHQ has a dummy nicknamed "the Head", one document noted.

-

Might be a misleading thread, but I think everyone knows what they get themselves into when they point a camera and mic that's connected to the web at their living room.

HAH! No, people said they would never consider doing that kind of thing and called everyone who suggest it a tin foil hat owner, and then the Snowden leaks happened.

This just confirms that they thought about doing it. Which is just as scary.

I don't use Kinect for video chat, it also doesn't show any activity on my network just sitting there.

I'm not worried about it. If they're watching me, they're wasting their time.

The Yahoo story is pretty sickening. No evidence linking it to Kinect though. That said, after reading about Yahoo it wouldn't surprise me at all, either now or in the future.

It is interesting that secret services were indeed investigating how to use Kinect to spy on people.

Certainly they will ignore the hundreds of millions of smart phone cameras, amirite?

Edit: This thread is so 2010.

Yeah I would definitely prefer if people were still mocking or flat out denying the facts.

We do now. Edward Snowden let us know. Don't pretend this was commmon knowledge before he blew the whistle.

And if anyone suggested anything to that effect before Snowden, he'd be branded a "tinfoiler" in no time.

YES.

Things have changed.

Why do people get surprised when spy agencies... you know spy on stuff... Like that BS a few months ago when the whole world was taken back that the US spy agency was spying on them. Its kinda their job lol.

Not that any of this is right, but it's getting to the point where I doubt they can efficiently use any of this. Millions of phone calls, e-mails, photos, GPS locations of of hundreds of millions of users, etc. a day with millions of hours of video, spying on the under the ocean communication cables, and so on and so forth. They are constantly having to build more and more storage facilities just to store the shit, and I don't care how many programs you have for sifting through this, there comes a point when you've got petabytes of data with 99.9% of it being irrelevant that you just become massively inefficient.

The idea that it isn't possible and that they aren't doing it is pretty silly imo. Snowden leaks from July confirmed MS's co-operation and more specifically with Skype which is a key element of Kinects video chat.

NSA taps Skype chats, newly published Snowden leaks confirm

In a story published Thursday, based on documents leaked by former National Security Agency (NSA) contractor Edward Snowden, The Guardian offers some detail about extensive cooperation between the FBI, the National Security Agency, and Microsoft to enable government access to user communications via the intelligence tool known as PRISM. That cooperation included, according to the leaked NSA documents, enabling access to Outlook.com e-mails and chats, the SkyDrive cloud storage service, and Skype audio and video calls.

The only issue here is that the UK spy agency did it because we already know the NSA did.

That's actually an argument for why they shouldn't just use giant vacuums to suck up everything in perpetuity rather than focus on the most likely threats.

Well you could argue that it has gotten out of hand a little bit in certain countries, where legislation (and constitution) has been bent to a point where some eyebrows might be raised. But fear not, even the GCHQ only uses its power for example "in the interests of the economic well-being of the United Kingdom in relation to the actions or intentions of persons outside the British Islands". I'm sure the NSA (and others) has similar goals and hence peoples' dicks are safe. I might however advice business owners to refrain from using Kinect or any other cameras or communication means whatsoever in their companies.

They wanted to do it
Microsoft are the most eager to help them to do it
they have the ability, desire and support to do it

and you guys think it's a leap?

That's a bit of a leap, don't you think?
Not in light of every other revelation about surveillance. We know that both the UK and US are following/recording/collating all web traffic, and we know that games have been one among many targeted connected media. Seems like a safe assumption to make at this point. Based on what we know now, it would be "a leap" to assume otherwise IMO.

I wonder how long it will be until somebody leaves a hard-drive full of these images on the train?

I'm always surprised people still think this can only be used against criminals. Over the past year or so there have been stories about the Hillsborough cover-up and smearing the victims, same thing with Stephen Lawerence's family and friends and the police may have tried stitching up a MP.
Imagine those kind of smear campaigns with something like this.

The NSA have also thought about using radical's porn history to discredit them.

I pity the poor spies who had to work out that stat.

And I don't know why they think it's surprising. Poor, naive GCHQ.
